MENCAP TREK - Ex-Treorci man Rhobert ap Steffan (son of the late Rev & Mrs Hinton of Luton St) has just returned from a five-week visit to Patagonia, South America, during which he trekked over the southern Andes to raise money for Mencap Cymru.

After the trek he spent time amongst the Welsh speaking population of ‘Y Wladfa’ during which he visited a town called ‘Treorcki’ and met the congregation of their Bethlehem chapel. Welsh is taught in their Treorcki school alongside Spanish - but no English!

Photo: Rhobert (in his red Owain Glyndwr top) with the congregation outside Bethlehem Chapel, Treorcki

Initially aiming to raise a target figure of £3,500 for Mencap (the charity that helps to make a difference to the lives of adults and children with learning disabilities) Rhobert has, to date, raised well over over double that amount through the sponsorship for his trek - a tremendous achievement.

Rhobert recorded his journey on the internet which can be seen at www.rhobertmencap.blogspot.com and if any readers would like to help Mencap, please visit www.justgiving.com/rhobert

Although the sponsors' fund closed at the end of December, donations can still be made directly to Mencap via the link on that webpage.

CHOIR - Côr Meibion Cwm Rhondda, together with their Musical Director Neil Topping, had a busy month in December.

On Tuesday, December 9, they took part in the Community Carol and Lessons service at St Barnabas Church, Penygraig, together with Soprano Ros Evans.  Despite depleted choir numbers because of winter ailments, a very appreciative congregation attended, and enjoyed an excellent service, they also joined in with the community carol singing and sing-along.  The proceeds were in aid of Shelter Cymru.

On Wednesday, December 17, the Choir held a Christmas Concert in St Peter’s Church, Pentre, where an overflowing church heard an excellent concert.  The choir were joined by the Ton Pentre Infants School Choir, the Ton Pentre Junior School Choir and members of Premier Productions, Adrian Evans, Alyson Evans, Dale Evans, Davron Hicks, Julia Kennedy and Gaynor Thomas. There were congregational carols and a Christmas Carol sing-along, which was enjoyed by everyone present.

On Saturday, December 20, they held their Annual Dinner/Dance at the Golf Club in Penrhys, where everyone present, choristers, partners and friends enjoyed an excellent meal and entertainment.

On New Year’s Eve, they sang at a wedding in Sardis Road Church, Pontypridd, where they entertained the wedding party and guests.

The Choir were all looking forward to their Christmas break and will resume practise at Ton Pentre Junior School on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at 7.30pm.

They will be busy rehearsing for their 10th Anniversary Year and especially for the forthcoming concert ‘One Day More 2’, with a selection of songs from the Musicals, which will be held at the Park and Dare Theatre, Treorchy, on Friday, May 15 and The Coliseum Theatre, Aberdare, on Friday, June 12. They will be joined for these concerts by the Ton Pentre Junior School Choir and Premier Productions.

The ‘One Day More’ concerts held in the same locations a few years ago, where a complete sell out, so make sure you order your tickets early.

Tickets are £7.00 in the Circle and £6.00 in the Stalls, and are available by post from 12 Bryn Rhedyn, Tonteg, CF38 1UG, or from Premier Box Office on 0845 2410391 or by email to premprodsareus@aol.com
