Social Audit... Appendix 1 - Planning Context |
||
|
The
town and country planning system is designed to regulate the development
and use of land in the public interest. In this context, the Government
has made clear its intention to work towards ensuring that development and
growth are sustainable. The planning system and the preparation of
development plans, in particular, contribute to the objectives of ensuring
that development and growth are sustainable. The
planning system also has a positive role to play in guiding appropriate
development to the right place, as well as preventing development which is
not acceptable. It must make adequate provision for development, and at
the same time take account of the need to protect the natural and built
environment. In
1991, Parliament underlined the role of development plans by amending the
Town and Country Planning Act 1990 to require development control
decisions to accord with the development plan unless other material
considerations indicate otherwise. * * * * * |
