SEPTEMBER 2004 TREORCHY SENIOR CITIZENS CLUB - On Thursday 23rd September, Treorchy Senior Citizens held their fortnightly meeting at Oak Tree Hall. Get well messages were sent to, Mrs Betty Jones, Mrs Dorothy Morgan, Mrs Lil Richards and two Committee members Mrs Beryl Jones and Mrs Joyce Davies who had been hospitalised. A speedy recovery was wished to all. After completing the afternoon's business, three games of Bingo were won by Mrs Maureen Williams, Mrs Maureen Williams and Mrs Jean Erasmus. Refreshments were followed by a very successful ‘Bring and Buy Sale’ organised by Mrs Judith James. The afternoon ended with the usual Raffle, which was won by Mrs Trudy Alford. The committee would like to thank everyone who donated items for the sale and the raffle. A big thank you also to Judith for organising the sale, and her helpers on the stall for helping to make the afternoon a success. Next Meetings are:
Members wishing to attend the Christmas Buffet Lunch on 16th December, please come along add your name to the list posted on the Notice Board at Oak Tree Hall.
Also there in their capacity as members of
the Arts & Leisure of the GWFI were Ann Thomas and Pauline Worman, who
also gave their valuable contribution on the day. As usual, Porthcawl
turned up trumps with the weather! THANKS
- Marion of Vicarage Terrace, Cwmparc would
like to thank all her friends in Treorchy who attended Peter’s funeral,
and for all their flowers, cards and sympathy during her sad loss. Thanks
also to the Rugby Club and RAFA Club for their bouquets to the house.
SENIOR CITIZENS - On Thursday 9th September, Treorchy Senior Citizens Club held their first open Social event with an afternoon Tea Dance at Oak Tree Hall Treorchy. The M.C. for the afternoon Mrs Vera Williams provided an excellent selection of music and Bernice and Glan led the floor demonstrating the individual dances. During the interval, a buffet, provided by members, was followed by Bingo and a Raffle. The bingo winners were, Mrs Isobel Sampson, Mrs Doreen Jackson and Mrs Dorothy Picken and the raffle was won by, Maria Jones, Glenys Jones and Mal Toghill. The committee would like to thank Mrs Vera Williams and Bernice and Glan for their invaluable expertise. Thank you also to members who contributed to the excellent buffet, the raffle prizes, and thank you Glenys Hathaway, Avis Phillips, Pat Scane and Jean Toghill for supplying an endless flow of hot tea and coffee. Finally, thank you everyone for making the afternoon a success. Forthcoming events are as follows. September 23rd - Bring and Buy. October 7th - Name that Tune. October 21st - Harvest Festival. 11th November - Bath Coach Trip. Would members booked to travel to Bath please purchase tickets at Oak Tree Hall at 200pm on Thursday 7th October.
RED SQUIRREL - Richard Thomas of Glyncoli Road, Treorchy recently reported seeing a red squirrel in his back garden on Sunday 15th August at around 8.15am. It walked along the garden wall and had a look around for a couple of minutes before setting off back in the direction of the local Primary School.
Richard said he thought it was a cat at first glance - until he noticed the big bushy tail - and wonders if anyone else has seen a red squirrel locally. Let us know if you have also spotted it, and for the record, Richard swears he hadn’t touched a drop the night before!
BOWLS - Pengelli Ladies Bowling Club qualified for the Double Rink Finals in the Welsh National Ladies Annual Competition held at Llanidloes on Wednesday 19th August. This year was the first time in 18 years that a Rhondda Ladies team had won through to the finals, and after a very closely contested match, the Pengelli Ladies were eventually pipped at the post by the Whitchurch, Cardiff team by only 2 points. The ladies have also enjoyed a very successful season this year, coming top of their division in the County Evening League. New members are always welcomed at any time throughout the season. Calling
voluntary organisations who need money A
Money and Advice Market will be held on Friday 10 September 2004 between
2.00pm and 8.00pm at The Rhondda Sports Centre in Ystrad. Interlink, a registered charity, and the county voluntary council for Rhondda Cynon Taff has organised the event for all voluntary organisations to come along to meet and hear about who might give them money. |

The
Big Lottery Fund, BBC Children in Need and the Coalfields
Regeneration Trust will be there along with dozens of others.
In addition to money there will be information and
exhibition stands, which will include the Charity Commission,
Business in The Community and lots of others who offer advice
and useful information to voluntary organisations. There is no charge to attend the event and people can come in anytime during the afternoon and after work. For more information and to register your interest call Interlink on 01443 485337.
Future events- “A Tea Dance” with light refreshments will be held at Oak Tree Hall at 2.00pm on Thursday 9th September. Tickets £1.00 are available by ringing 776681 or you can pay at the door. The afternoon will also contain the usual three games of Bingo.
"Star Search 2004" - Heats for amateur or semi-professional entertainers will be held every Wednesday at the Pentre Legion Club, Albert Street, Pentre, Rhondda - starting from 29th September. Contestants must be aged 14 or over to take part. First prize - £750. Second Prize - £500. Third Prize - £250. To take part - or for further information - contact the Show Co-ordinator Neil Abber at nh9921@rncb.ac.uk or phone 01443 439941. Calls will be diverted to Neil's mobile at no extra charge to callers.
