LAUGHTER - A recent survey on Britain's laughing habits revealed that people living in Wales enjoyed 32 chuckles daily - almost twice the national average rate of 18 laughs in a single day.

  • WRITERS - Rhondda based author Roy Duncan is holding a ten-week creative writing course at the Pheonix Community Centre, Ton Pentre on Thursdays at 7pm. For details phone 01443 772534.

FRENCH - Club de Francais Cardiff invite French speakers of all abilities to join their society which meets fortnightly at Cardiff University's Trevithick Building in The Parade, Newport Road, Cardiff. Sessions cost £1.50 or £12 per annum, but are free for students. The next session is Friday 28th September at 7.15pm.

  • MYSTERY - An Autumn Murder Mystery Evening is being staged with a wine and buffet supper at the Rhondda Heritage Park on Saturday 22nd September. Tickets are £14.95 available for amateur sleuths from 01443 682036.

  • ROAD SHOW - South Wales Police have launched an auto-crime initiative called Operation Rally to target suspects. Neighbourhood Watch and Crime panels will join them at a road show in the carpark at Pioneer Stores, Porth on Friday 28th September.

BURGLARY - Thieves stole a television pre-payment meter from a house in Stuart Street, Treorchy after gaining entrance through an insecure kitchen door.

  • EVENT - The World's Biggest Coffee Morning - an annual event to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Relief - will be held across the U.K. on Friday, 28th September. Contact 0845 602 1246 or log on to www.worldsbiggestcoffeemorning.org.uk for a free fundraising pack.

TALENT SHOW - Singer Bobby Gilbert is organising a talent show at the Pentre Legion in October and is looking for semi-professional acts to contact him on 01443 435473.

  • CONCERT - Treorchy Male Voice Choir hold their Annual Autumn Concert at the Park and Dare theatre on Thursday, October 11th at 7.30pm. Contact the box office for details on 01443 773112.

ARMED ROBBER - A man armed with a gun, threatened a petrol service station cashier at Bridgend. He was described as 5ft 7in tall and wearing an orange balaclava, baggy beige jeans and a thin cotton-style zip-up jacket. Anyone with information can phone Bridgend police station on 06156 655 555.

  • UNRELIABLE - First Great Western’s trains, which run between South Wales and London, have been officially named as the most unreliable in Britain. The league table published by the Strategic Rail Authority showed that only 56.3% of the services had run on time.

CONTRACT -Tower Colliery at Hirwaun has secured a 3-year contract to supply Aberthaw Power Station with half a million tonnes of coal each year. The colliery is the last deep mine in Wales and the only worker-owned pit in Europe.

  • ATTACK - An 88-year old Treorchy widow discovered her purse - containing £17 in cash - had been stolen as she returned from shopping. May Jenkins was pushed to the ground as she entered her home with her walking frame - by a young woman who fled while pretending to go for help. Within two hours of the theft, a credit card bill of £360 had been accumulated during a half-hour spending spree in Tonypandy.

WRITING - Local author Ron Watkins is holding a “Writing for Profit” class at Abergorky Workingmen’s Hall, Treorchy on Friday evenings from 7 to 9pm. The course is run by Cardiff University and credits towards recognized qualifications. Course costs are £72 - but fees are waived for pensioners or people receiving benefits.
