NEXT STEPS - Is Next Steps the class for you? Every Tuesday from 12.30 to 2.30pm classes are held at Pentre Primary School. Sessions include glass painting, decoupage, card making, computer skills and many varied activities. Why not come along and make new friends and learn some new skills.   • JUMBLE SALE - A jumble sale will be held at Ystrafechan Home for the Elderly on Saturday 24th September at 1.30pm. All welcome.

ACHIEVEMENTS - Congratulations to Thelma Price, Vicky Griffiths, Teresa Hince and Lesley Crew for their fantastic achievement at the Slimming World class held in Ton Pentre.

These determined ladies have lost an amazing 20 stone between them and are a real inspiration to their fellow members – having won “Women of the Year 2005” in the Slimming World Ton and Ystrad Group section.

Best wishes to Teresa Hince when she represents Ton Pentre at the regional finals in Newport on 18th September.

Ton Pentre Slimming World members have lost over 350 stone per year for the last three years - that's over 1000 stone in just three years!!

  • KARAOKE - Karaoke evenings have restarted at the Treorchy Conservative Club on Sundays from 8pm, with Darren at the helm! 

RHONDDA OAP MEETING - The next meeting of the Rhondda Area of the National OAP Association of Wales will take place on Tuesday, 20th September at 10.30 am at the Ystrad OAP Hall (next to the Star Hotel). The guest speaker will be Christine Thomas, RCT Council’s Older People and 50plus Forum Development Officer. Anyone over the age of 50 is most welcome to attend. 

  • BALLOON RACE - Treorchy WI will hold a “Balloon Event” on Thursday 15th September, when lots of balloons will be released, from the top of Cemetery Road, Treorchy, to celebrate the Women’s Institute’s 90th Anniversary.

    Cash prizes will be awarded to the owner of the balloon which travels furthest - and £20 to the person who phones to say they have found it. There will also be a £5 ‘booby’ prize for the balloon reported nearest to Treorchy. All claims should be made to 01443 772214 by 24th September.

CHARITY WALK - Hannah Llewellyn, manager at HSBC Bank plc, Treorchy is organising a charity walk (for 12 miles in the Bridgend area) on Saturday 10 September. The walk is to raise funds for Velindre Hospital, Cardiff.

  • BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OPENS - The Ton and Gelli Boys’ and Girls’ Club opens for the autumn season on Tuesday 6th September at 6pm. Located just off the top end of Dinam Park Avenue, Ton Pentre - the club will be open on Tues, Wed and Thurs evenings from 6pm to 8pm. 

    Boys and girls (age 7 to 15) are welcome to participate in a range of sporting, recreational and social activities. The new club intends to add educational activities including the Duke of Edinburgh award. Contributions are £1 a week. 

    To broaden the activities on offer the club is very keen to add to their existing volunteers. Instructors for sports such as basketball and table tennis are particularly welcome. If you want to get involved please call in at the club or call 01443 425894 and ask for Dean. 

CANCER SERVICES - Community Cancer Services provides emotional and practical support to people experiencing cancer in Rhondda and Taff Ely. Offering complimentary therapies, counselling and a transport service to take people to and from hospital appointments, they also provide transport to and from their centre in Tonypandy.

They are particularly keen to promote the transport service as there are likely to be many people who would benefit from the service but are perhaps unaware it is available to them.

All services are free, and to access any of them, people only need to telephone 01443 421999 or call in to the centre at 8 Dunraven Street, Tonypandy. 
  • FOOTBALL KIT APPEAL - Treorchy Boys Club Under 15's football team are currently on the look out for a new kit sponsor for the forthcoming  season. A majority of the team has been together since the age of 9 and last season came away from the Prestatyn Pontins Tournament with the team merit award. The team are already busy fundraising as they are hopeful of entering a tournament in Holland or Belgium at the end of this season. Anyone interested in helping the boys out with a new kit please contact Jonny on 07967299645.
