OCTOBER 2007

  • FETE - Treorchy WI hold a Halloween Fete at St Matthews Church Hall on Saturday, October 27 from 10am to 12.30pm

CHOIR PERFORMS AT NEW CENTRE - Cor Meibion Cwm Rhondda had a busy time recently when they performed on two separate days in the auditorium at the new Llwynypia Community Centre at Coleg Morgannwg.

The Open Days organised by Llwynypia Communities First in the first week of October were very successful, this is an excellent new facility. Within this new centre, the auditorium is designed to seat 200 people (140 down and 60 up) with very comfortable, roomy seats. They have two recording studios, dance studio, conference room and meeting rooms, which can be booked by any organisation.

Cor Meibion Cwm Rhondda then rounded off the week with a performance at a wedding at St. Peters Church , Pentre.
They have since been enjoying a few days rest before their next rehearsals, held weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7.30pm at Ton Pentre Junior School . Why not come along and listen and maybe join the choir. All are welcome.

  • QUIZ NIGHT - Friends of Treorchy Primary School are holding a Quiz Night at the school on Friday, October 19 at 7 pm. Admission is £1.50 per person and tickets can be purchased in advance from the school and also on the night.

  • Light refreshments will be available and everyone is welcome. Please come along and support our local primary school. Further info is available from the school on 01443 773084

RHONDDA CAMEO - There was a good attendance at the September meeting, of the Rhondda Cameo Society, for the start of the new season. The guest speaker was Mr John Asquith who traced the origins, and development throughout Europe, of the ancient art of storytelling.

The owners of great houses and castles employed professional storytellers to entertain their guests. This oral tradition was eventually written in “The Tales of the Mabinogion” and the Black Book of Carmarthen.

An appreciative vote of thanks was given by Annie Clarke. The next meeting, on October 31, will be an Autumn Tea with speaker Sheena Crossley.

  • FAMILY PARTY - On Saturday, September 15, four generations of the Willis family met at the Treorchy Conservative Club for a family party. The celebration took place as the result of family history research. There were almost 40 people in attendance, the oldest being 80 years of age and the youngest just 2.

  • As well as ‘locals’ some of the family had travelled from as far afield as Guildford in Surrey, Lowestoft, Malvern, Forest of Dean, Llandrindod Wells, Swansea and Bridgend. Everyone enjoyed an evening full of fun and reminiscing. There was opportunity to add up to date information to the family tree and a ‘How Well Do You Know Your Family?’ quiz.

  • Our thanks go to Anthony at Treorchy Library for his invaluable help in researching the Willis family and the ladies at The Treorchy Conservative Club for providing the venue.

  • We are now trying to trace the whereabouts of Marian, the daughter of Stephen and Elizabeth Willis.

  • Marian was brought up by Elizabeth ’s sister, Rosie Edwards, after Elizabeth died.  Marian married Tom Roberts and had two children, a girl and a boy.

  • If you have any information please telephone 01594 835512.

  • The Willis family, originally from Gelli, are planning to hold another family party in September 2008. For further details please telephone 01594 835512.

FETE THANKS - Friends of Treorchy Primary School were pleased to enjoy the best of weather during their annual summer fete (held in July) and the day itself went very, very well. The group’s fete raised over £1500 which was amazing.

The kids enjoyed a bouncy slide, hook a duck, tattoos and Cardiff City provided entertainment with their penalty shoot out. Once again we were blessed with fabulous home made cakes and sandwiches which are always a great success.

Children had the chance to buy all sorts of ‘inflatables’ and punch balls and there were a total of 6 raffle prize winners.

The school sold ceramic pots that each child had decorated, which were very popular.

Once again, a big thank you goes out to everyone who supported them on the day, and to the Friends of Treorchy for manning the stalls and making the day another great success for Treorchy Primary School

  • SURGERIES - Local Plaid Cymru Councillors hold their next monthly advice surgeries on Friday, October 5.
