Please make sure that you post your cards in our special boxes and not the Royal Mail boxes as any cards delivered by the Royal Mail will carry a surcharge for the customer. The closing date for the Scout Post is mid day on the 3rd December.

Last year over 70,000 cards were delivered and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the retail outlets that sell the stamps and everybody involved in this mammoth operation in the sorting and delivery of the cards.

We are looking for help and we would like to hear from any former Scouts or Guides or particular retired people who would be able to help delivery cards during the day.
  • 'ACTION OVERSEAS' - Pastor Andrew Jenkins, formerly of Ynyswen, remains active within the Apostolic Church’s ‘Action Overseas’ programme - which continues to undertake many missionary enterprises across the world today, with Andrew being their representative for Asia.

In the light of the recent 7.6 magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan on 8th October, he will be flying out to Islamabad, the capital, in January and has recently informed his parents Tom and Rita, who still live locally, that the tremor of this earthquake was felt as far afield as Kabul and Dehli, in Afganistan and India respectively. The main areas affected having been Kashmir and Pakistan’s North-West Frontier Province.

Andrew is in constant contact with a close friend in Pakistan, a Pastor Nazir Gill, who is the Superintendent Minister of the Apostolic Churches there and who reports that there have been many members and families made homeless with many fatalities and serious injuries.

Pastor Gill also informed Andrew that once the harsh winter sets in, the situation is unthinkable.

Andrew is sent all good wishes for his future endeavours in this stricken region.

POOL - Congratulations to the Stag Hotel Pool Team who recently won Division Two of the Upper Rhondda Pool League with a 8-1 final game victory against the Greenfield.

Nineteen year-old Ceri Hobbs has been a success story this season for them, achieving eight maximum breaks for the team.

Team members are Kevin Moon (captain), Steve Hamer, Jamie Cook, Will Coleman, Jamie Evans, Matthew Cook, Steve Hayes, Matthew Romans and Ceri Hobbs.

  • OAP ASSOCIATION - Are you doing anything important on 8th November? If not, why not pop along to the Ystrad OAP Hall, near the Star Hotel, to hear Mr Alun Davies presenting a talk on old age matters and a lot of other interesting subjects.

  • Mr Davies is well known all over Great Britain, having presented lectures to OAP conferences at Porthcawl, Blackpool and London, and is also Chairman of the National Association of OAP Wales and represents this body at the National Assembly of Wales in Cardiff. The meeting will commence at 10.30am and everyone is welcomed.

CAMEO SOCIETY - Members of the Rhondda Cameo Society enjoyed an Autumn Tea, which followed the October meeting. Guest speaker for the afternoon was Mr Alan James form the University of Glamorgan, who delighted the audience with reminiscences of his grandmother and great-grandmother.

The memories had been recorded on tape and gave a wonderful impression of everyday life in Maesteg, reaching back into the 19th Century. An appreciative vote of thanks to Mr James, was given by Megan Morris.

The Annual Christmas Dinner on November 30th will be held at Ton Pentre Football Club, commencing at 6.30 for 7 o’clock seating.
