NOVEMBER 2004

  • SPONSORSHIP LAUNCH - Treorchy Rugby Club held a sponsorship launch with Brains local brewery on Friday 5th November, which included entertainment from a duo called ‘Brooklyn’.

    During the evening, Club Chairman Andrew Jones made an excellent speech about the relationship the club has with Brains, and also the need for more people in the community to get involved with the Rugby Club on and off the field.

DARTS - The Stag Hotel Sunday night darts team gained mixed fortunes in their two recent games, defeating Pentre Legion ‘B’ by 4 - 3, but going down 5 - 2 to Tynewydd Labour ‘A’. Against Pentre Legion it was nip and tuck all the way, with youngster Ceri Hobbs winning the deciding singles against David Knight.

Whilst against Tynewydd Labour, the hosts led 2-1 after the team game, despite the Stag’s Handel Rich going out on a 104 finish. The Stag did manage a doubles win through Handel Rich and Kevin Moon, but it was to no avail as the upper Rhondda side claimed their 5-2 victory. 

  • POOL - The Lion ‘A’ Pool Side have won the Upper Rhondda Division One League title for an amazing nine consecutive seasons when they whitewashed the Bush ‘A’ 9 – 0 to add to this season’s knockout cup success.

The team, led by stalwart David Holvey, includes master cueman Chris Elliott who so far this season has contributed seven maximums to his side’s success.

DECEASED - Retired Salvation Army Captain Douglas Irving Phillips, formerly of Crown Avenue, Ynyswen, passed away on Sunday 24th October. The funeral service was held at the Salvation Army Citadel in Pentre on 1st November, followed by internment at St Michael’s Church, Colwinston. see Funeral Reports (under Classified Ads) for full details.

  • FURNITURE DISPLAY - "toogoodtowaste" - a registered charity - will be holding a Community Furniture Display on Thursday November 11th at the Boys & Girls Club off Station Road (opposite Co op) Treorchy. 

    People on a low income will be able to choose furniture for a small donation and in most cases have the items delivered on the same day.  

    The event will run from 11.00 to 1.00pm and will be supported by other groups such as Rhondda Against Illegal Drugs, Age Concern, Action Team for Jobs and Crime Prevention.

SURGERIES - Plaid Cymru Councillors for the Treorchy Ward hold their next monthly surgeries on Friday, 5th Novenber at Cwmparc Welfare Hall from 10am to 11am, at Ynyswen Welfare Hall from 10am to 10:45am, and at Pinewood House (Noddfa), Treorchy from 11am to 12 noon.

All residents are welcome to attend and no advance appointments are necessary.If you would prefer a home visit at any other time, please contact Cennard Davies on 435563 or Edward Hancock on 774785.

  • ANTIQUE & COLLECTORS FAIR - An Antique and Collectors Fair will be held at the Park and Dare Theatre on Saturday 6th November and will be open from 10am to 4pm with an entrance fee of only 50p.

    Ann and Peta, who run “Amber Fairs ”, hold regular Antique Fairs around the Vale of Glamorgan and the ladies are hoping their fair at Treorchy will be the first of many, should the day prove a success.

RHONDDA CAMEO SOCIETY - At the October meeting of the Rhondda Cameo Society an entertaining quiz on various subjects was presented by popular quizmaster Graham John. This was followed by an Autumn Tea, which was enjoyed by a large attendance.

We now look forward to the Christmas Dinner at Ton Pentre Football Club on 24th November, when the ‘Harmony Singers’ vocal group will provide the entertainment.Friends of members are welcome to join us for the dinner.
