  • CANCER SERVICES - A brand new guide for cancer services has been launched under a joint initiative between Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Merthyr Tydfil for people affected by cancer, their carers and families. 

    It is supported by the New Opportunities Fund (NOF) with a grant from National Lottery funds and the free guide will act as a signpost to services and contains details of groups and organisations, so that people are able to gain advice and support at a time that they may need it most.   

    The guide is available to read on the Council’s Internet site at www.rhondda-cynon-taff.gov.uk/communitycare or contact the Freephone Rhondda Cynon Taf Carers Line 0808 100 1801 for a free copy.

VIDEOS - Videos of the 50th Anniversary Concert of Treorchy Comprehensive School Band - compered by Michael Aspel - are in popular demand.   • SHOW - Yvonne Garrad's dance class, for girls aged 5 to 14 years, will perform an evening show at the Park & Dare Theatre, Treorchy on Saturday 22nd November - thanks to the efforts of parents and dance class members who have helped fundraise with sponsored silences and monthly raffles etc. to help meet the costs of the girls appearing on the local theatre stage. TREORCHY OAP -  The next social afternoon will be on Thursday 20th November at 2.00pm in Oak Tree Hall when Jan Smith will give a demonstration on Sugar Craft.  Come along and pick up ideas to decorate your Christmas Cakes.

  • ALLOTMENTS - Gardeners thinking of having an allotment are invited to put their names forward to the Upper Cwmparc Allotment Society, whose allotments are situated behind No’s 1 - 32 Parc Road, Cwmparc.

COFFEE MORNINGS - Members of Gosen Christian Centre at 31 Bute Street, Treorchy now host an open coffee morning every Thursday from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Everyone is welcome to drop in and spend some time chatting in a warm and friendly atmosphere over a nice cup of tea or coffee, at no charge. For more information, please phone 772571.

  • DEAFNESS - The National Deaf Children's Society requires a cross-section of families with deaf children - who live in Wales - to take part in new research on communication needs, in order to pinpoint improvements for health, education and social services. WRVS VOLUNTEERS - The Women's Royal Voluntary Service provides hospital visitors with shops and refreshments. Volunteers aged between 14 and 75 are required to help out at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. For further information contact the central volunteer hotline on 0845 601 4670.

NOVEL - Ron Watkins, the prolific Ynyswen author, has just had his 21st novel published. Like most of his other novels this is a Western entitled, 'A Bullet for the Preacher'. It is published by the London publisher Robert Hale at £10.75. 

Ron intended putting up an exhibition in Treorchy Library of the dust jackets of his 21 novels and call the exhibition '21 Today' - but when he arrived at the library he found that it was closed indefinitely due to workmen finding asbestos in the roof... as Burns said "it was a case of the best laid plans..."

 

Ron will soon have his own dedicated web pages within our community website.

  • UPPER RHONDDA JUNIOR BAND - The Upper Rhondda Junior Brass Band travelled to Corsham, Wiltshire recently, to take part in a Solo and Quartet Junior Brass Band Contest.

    The young band members competed in various classes and scooped several of the top place awards.

    Chloe Mears and David Mace each winning first prizes, Stuart Hobbs, Ieuan Williams and Gareth Robinson all winning second prizes, and finally Gavin Mosedale and Stuart Hobbs both winning third prizes.

    The Quartet band members took first place in their section also.

GUEST SPEAKER - Colin Urquhart, author and senior pastor of Kingdom Faith Ministries, will be the guest speaker at Gosen Christian Centre, 31 Bute Street, Treorchy on Friday 21st November at 7.30pm. For more information please contact 01443 772571.

  • RHONDDA OAP MEETING - A meeting of the National Association of OAP’s of Wales will be held on Tuesday, 11th November at the Ystrad Rhondda Pensioners Hall (near the Star Hotel) in Ystrad, with Ann Bolton as the guest speaker. The meeting will begin at 10.30am and everyone over the age of 55 is welcome to attend.

SURGERIES - Treorchy Ward Councillors hold their monthly surgeries at Cwmparc Welfare Hall from 10am to 11am, at Ynyswen Welfare Hall from 10am to 10:45am, and at Pinewood House (Noddfa), Treorchy from 11am to 12 noon, on Friday, 7th November.

All residents are welcome to attend and no appointments are necessary.

  • CONCERT - A “Grand Three Choir Concert” will be held at Bethlehem Chapel, Treorchy on Thursday Nov 6th with the unique voices of The Richard Williams Singers, Gentlemen Songsters and The Richard Williams Juniors Singers (who have recently returned from a tour of Eire) and featuring soloist Helen May.

  • Ms Helen May is an internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano who also teaches music and voice at the Treorchy Comprehensive School along with other comprehensives in R.C.T.

TREORCHY OAP - Treorchy Senior Citizens (O.A.P) Club met at Oak Tree Hall Treorchy on Thursday 23rd October.  Everyone enjoyed an informative and entertaining talk, by Mrs Barbara Webb, on Reflexology. Refreshments were served, followed by the usual three hands of Bingo. The next meeting will take place at 2.00pm on Thursday 6th November when Mrs Ann Thomas will give a demonstration on line dancing. So, come along everyone and join in the fun. 

  • MUSICAL - Spotlight Theatre Company presents "42nd Street" at the Park & Dare Theatre from Tues to Sat, 4th - 8th November 2003. All performances begin at 7.15pm, the Musical Director is Geraint Bessant and Pat Evans is the Production Director/Choreographer. Tickets are £7 and £6. Phone 422202.

TRANSPORT - Can anyone help a disabled gentleman who requires transport to undertake voluntary work in a local primary school? The gentleman would like to travel from Treherbert to Pen Pych Community Primary School in Blaenrhondda – twice a week if possible - on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1.30pm and 3.30pm.
