ANNIVERSARY
- There
was a vested “Rhondda Valley” presence recently during the
course of the anniversary of the Apostolic Church in Latvia –
which was previously a part of the old Soviet Union.
One
of the delegation representing the Apostolic Church within the
United Kingdom was Pastor Andrew Jenkins, a native of Ynyswen and
a member of the Missionary Board of the Apostolic Church which
have enterprises in South America and Africa, etc. He has
previously visited and spoken in Latvia, where a delegation from
the Danish Church will also be present.
On
this occasion are two fellow Welshmen, Pastors David Vaughan and
Peter Vincent. Pastor Vaughan is the son of the late Pastor Idris
Vaughan, who was a pioneering missionary in South West Africa in
the early 1930’s and where today, the Apostolic Church has six
million members.
Andrew
is to be the guest speaker at a church rally in Ogre, Latvia and
will be speaking through interpreters in Latvian and Russian. The
delegations are also visiting Lithuania.
Andrew
is an ordained minister of the Apostolic church and was previously
the resident Pastor of the Newcastle area in the North-East of
England.
He
has now taken over a new post as resident Pastor at Newport, and
lives in Tredegar Gardens along with his wife Joyce and youngest
son Nicholas. Joyce is also a Rhondda native and the daughter of
Pastor John and Beryl Gregory of Clydach Vale and will soon be
taking up the post as manager of Crossroads in Monmouth.
Their
son Joseph who served with the paras in Kosovo, is currently
abroad with his regiment.
SUPPORT
NEEDED - Friends of Treorchy Primary may soon cease to exist.
The committee are appealing for new members to come forward to help
carry on with the good works of raising funds for the local
schoolchildren. Anyone interested is welcome to see the committee
members any Monday morning in the Infants School Hall between 9 and
9.30pm. Volunteers are also needed to help on the stalls in the
forthcoming Christmas Craft Fayre on Saturday 30th November. Contact
Kathy or Michelle - class 3 infants parents - at the school.

CARBON MONOXIDE - A
new information page has been placed on www.House.co.uk
- the British Gas website - to warn about the symptoms of carbon
monoxide poisoning, which can easily be mistaken for 'flu. Early signs
of carbon monoxide poisoning in the home include thumping head,
feeling run down, dizzy or tired. Anyone suspecting carbon monoxide
poisoning should immediately ventilate the property, switch of all gas
appliances and contact the gas emergency line on 0800 111 999.

also be regularly swept and good room ventilation maintained.
FAKE
WHISKY ALERT - RCT Council have issued a warning that counterfiet
Johnny Walker Black Label whisky - containing a potentially lethal dose of

LINE DANCE - The Rhondda
Applejacks line dance class from Cwmparc have held a marathon line
dance in memory of Ray Hill, who died in September, raising £1,115
for the Cardiac Monitoring Unit at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. Mr
Hill had been a great supporter of the Applejacks and his wife Marlene
and daughter Leanne are members of the group. Spokesman Alan Jones
thanked everyone for sponsoring the 30 non-stop dance marathon.
SANTA
APPEAL - RCT's Children and Young People's Division are working in
partnership with local volunteers to arrange the Santa Appeal 2002 - to
collect gifts from local people to help all those children not fortunate
enough to be expecting family presents. In past years the appeal has
helped to provide presents for thousands of children who were are not
helped by any other local or national appeal. Anyone interested in
donating a gift is invited to phone 01443 441040 between 6pm and 10pm
until Friday 6th December. Callers will be given the first name and age of
a child and will be asked to deliver a gift in Christmas wrapping to
one of the local collection centres. Presents donated will all go to local
children.

TOUR - Treorchy Male Voice
Choir has undertaken their first Scottish tour in almost 50 years and
is now undertaking their Autumn concert season, including performances
in Southampton, Dudley and at the Park and Dare Theatre at Christmas.

CYMRU/WALES - The NSPCC in Wales has a child protection helpline
service on 0808 100 2524 to help protect children and families from
domestic violence.

INHALERS RECALLED -
Batches of asthma inhalers have been recalled after a fault was
discovered in the valve causing it to deliver higher doses.
Patients are advised to check the batch number on their Salbulin
Inhaler CFC Free which is printed on the box and again on the metal
can - and return it to the pharmacist or doctor who dispensed it. The
affected batches are GBD084A February 2004 200 doses, GDC010A March
2004 200 doses, GDC010C March 2004 200 doses. No other batches or
other £M inhaler products are affected. Patients who are concerned
are advised to contact their doctor or health care professional or the
3M helpline on 01509613028.
FAMILY
CONTACT - The charity "Family Contact" seeks
volunteers to help children keep in contact with non-resident parents
and other family members. Volunteers need to have five hours to spare
each Saturday. Full training is given and all out of pocket expenses

SCOUTS - Rhondda Scout
Fellowship are recruiting new members - aged over 18 - to help with
local scout groups. Previous experience is not necessary as training
will be given. As well as supporting local scouts, the group meet on a
regular basis in Ystrad for social events. They also arrange rock
climbing, canoeing, camps & barbeques. For more details contact

SEA
CADETS - Rhondda Sea Cadets are looking for new members and adult
staff. Anyone interested is welcome to attend their parade nights - which
are held next in a unit next to Tonypandy Fire Station - on Tuesdays and
Fridays from 7pm to 9.30pm and on Wednesdays from 7 pm to 9pm.

SCHEME - Funds have been
granted to Abergorki Community Hall and Treorchy and District Chamber
of Trade to help set up a community transport scheme. People with
transport problems are urged to come forward so they can be included
in the plans. Community groups are urged to contact either Nick Nedsky

VOLUNTEERS
- Volunteers are needed to help at a drop-in centre in Ton Pentre,
between 10am and 3pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The
centre is run by New Horizons Mental Health Resource Centres - a Rhondda
charity which aims to help people who need somewhere to go and someone to
talk to. Travelling expenses will be paid and courses are available. Phone

CON MEN - Police warned
elderly people to be on their guard after an 87 year-old Treorchy
woman was conned into letting two men - who were posing as council
officials - into her home. The men stole £160 in cash and are
described as being in their early twenties, with short dark hair and
of stocky muscular build.
RECOVERED
- Various items of stolen jewelry were found in a premises in
Treherbert - hidden under floorboards during a drugs raid. Recovered items
included gold rings, necklaces, bracelets and watches etc. Contact DC

ST. PETER'S CHURCH - A
fundraising committee has been set up to raise £385,000 needed to
carry out major repairs to the 110 year-old church in Pentre, Rhondda
which is a listed building. Contact Wyndham King on 01443 434427 to
make a donation.

Touchwood shop in High
Street Treorchy are donating a root chair valued at £650 to help
raise funds for St Peter's Church. Raffle tickets to win the chair are
on sale at Touchwood until December.
APPEAL
- The RAID café in Llewellyn Street, Pentre, - set up in 1998 to raise
funds for the battle against illegal drugs in the Rhondda - is facing
closure unless the premises are used more by the community. Local Police
Inspector Paul Cannon - founder member of RAID (Rhondda Against Illegal
Drugs) - stated that the café is so underused it will have to close if
there is no increase in support from the public and appeals to people to
help by calling in for a cup of coffee or loaf of bread.
CILMERI RALLY - A rally
will be held at 12 noon on December 14th 2002 at the memorial stone at
Cilmeri, Builth Wells, Powys, to commemorate the death of Llewellyn,
Prince of Wales. At 3pm a service will be held at Llanynys Church,
conducted by Rev. Nigel Hall, vicar of Builth. Refreshments are
available. On December 15th there will be an open air service at Abbey
Cwm Hir (or in the church if wet) followed by an Annual Lecture in the

SANTA'S
SUITCASE - The team of Travelcare in Treorchy are appealing for
Christmas gifts or toys to help fill Santa's suitcase. Travelcare in
Bute Street are getting into the spirit of Christmas and plans to
distribute toys or gifts donated to Barnados Intensive Family Support
Service in Llwynypia to help spread a little joy over the festive season.
As well as asking members of the public to support the appeal, Travelcare
is also hoping other local businesses will help to fill Santa's suitcase,
