CANCER RESEARCH UK - Treorchy and District Cancer Research Committee have recently celebrated 40 years of fundraising in our local area and last month held its annual fund-raising Christmas Coffee Evening at St. Matthew's Church Hall, Treorchy.

Although it was a cold, wet and windy night, our regular supporters filled the hall and due to their usual generosity, £911 was raised for this very worthwhile cause.

The evening was a special event, celebrating the establishment of the Cancer Group 40 years ago.

Since its establishment, the Committee has raised £175,000 and to mark the occasion, two special guests, representing Cancer UK , were present, namely Mr Peter Whalley, Regional Manager for South Wales & West Midlands and Linda Strange (Area Volunteer Manager).

During the course of the evening, they presented long-service medals to 5 members who have worked with the Treorchy Committee for over 20 years.

The guest speaker on this auspicious occasion was the Ton Pentre born broadcaster, Dewi Griffiths who gave his services free to this worthy charity. In a speech, delivered in his relaxed, interesting and entertaining style, he outlined some of the highlights of his BBC career. The talk was very well received by an appreciative audience who all wished that he would soon make a return visit.

As usual, everyone enjoyed the cakes, coffee and chatter and it was good learn that all our guests were duly impressed with the generous support given to the Committee by Rhondda people and with the happy, congenial atmosphere that pervaded all the evening's proceedings.
