November - December 2006

HALF MARATHON UPDATE - Simon Kinsey from Tynybedw Street and friend Gavin Phillips ran in the Cardiff half-marathon in October to raise money to help with the ongoing running costs of heating & lighting etc. for the Treorchy Boys’ & Girls’ Club - which is in constant need of funds.

The Cardiff run went well for both of them: Gavin got round in 2 hours 22 mins, while Simon completed it in 1 hour 56 mins.

Good support came from regulars at both the Red Cow and the Prince of Wales - via raffles, individual sponsorship (and "swear box" at the Red Cow) - enabling Simon and Gavin to raise about £250 to date. Thanks to all who supported their efforts.

NEW HOME

Best wishes to former Treorchy girl Mrs Maud Jones (pictured right) - and originally from High Street and Troedyrhiw Tce, Treorchy) who has moved from Tynewydd to make her home with elder son Emyr and his wife Stephanie who live in Ross-on-Wye.

Maud has been a keen supporter of our community web site and newsletter and we wish her every happiness in her new home.

WINNERS - The winners of the Treorchy Male Voice Choir’s Junior Singer and Instrumentalist of the Year Competition have recently enjoyed an all-expenses paid trip to New Hampshire, USA - thanks to RCT County Borough Council.

Over 370 children entered the contest after seven primary schools in the upper Rhondda Fawr were invited to enter the pilot event.

Treorchy Male Choir initiated the competition in readiness for their Diamond Jubilee Year - which celebrated its 60th anniversary in Oct 2006, since reforming following World War II.

Choristers had wanted to thank their home audience for six decades of unstinting support by organising a competition that would help encourage Rhondda youngsters to follow a career in music.

Two prizes were awarded for the Junior Singer and Junior Instrumentalist.

Each received a £200 cash prize, a trophy for their school to keep for a year, their own personal trophy and every contestant received a certificate and a shield.

Report from Friends of Treorchy Primary School ...

Friends of Treorchy Primary have had a very successful year to date, starting up in January 2006 when our new Head Teacher Louise Evans (pictured) took up her post with the school.

Along with the committee members and parents, Mrs Evans and the staff have all been extremely supportive to every function that has been held and without the support of them, the children and their families we would not have raised the funds that we have.

Another big thank you must go to the local shops and owners who so kindly donated prizes or refreshments for our raffle and our refreshment stall.

Our aim when we started up was to purchase a new Interactive White Board for the school and we can proudly say that an order has been placed for one which will be fitted very shortly.

We organised our first school disco for Easter which went down a storm with all the kids and since then we have held a further 2 more discos which continue to be a big turnout.

Our school fete in July was a huge success, we raised over £1,000 and we cannot thank everyone enough who supported us. We had guest appearances from ‘Lara Croft’ and ‘Wayne Rooney’ (above right) and Cardiff City turned up to hold a penalty shoot out. The kids had great fun soaking one of the Dad’s as Coco the Clown, (above left) and Rhondda Cycle Centre brought their monkey bike along while others had fun on the bouncy castle.

The fire service came along with a fire engine so anyone could sit in the front or the back to see how it all works and had good fun trying on the helmets. Some children even had the chance to oversee the fete via a CCTV camera which Pentre Police Station brought along in their surveillance unit. We had live entertainment on the day from Black Horse and also Abergorki Tang Soo Do showed us their skills with a demonstration along with RSD Cheerleaders.

After the summer break we organised a Quiz Night which was held in October and once again we had a very successful and fun filled evening. We raised over £300. A challenge from the winning team of Teachers has been set – so bring on the next one!!

Halloween couldn’t go unnoticed and although it fell during the Half Term Holidays we had a fancy dress disco before the break up of school. Prizes were for Scariest Costume and Best Dancer. The competition was fierce.

Our fundraising events planned for November were a Chocoholics party at the school and a Bling Party in the Infants Hall where all ‘grown ups’ were welcome to come along and enjoy a glass of sherry and a mince pie.

Our Christmas School Fete will be held on Saturday, 9th December in the Junior Hall. All proceeds will go towards the Friends of Treorchy and we would welcome anyone to come along and support us and begin to enjoy the Festive Season.

Once again thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout 2006 and we look forward to raising lots more funds next year and having fun at the same time. Merry Christmas Everyone and a Happy and Prosperous New Year from the Friends of Treorchy Primary School.
