CANCER RESEARCH - June is the busiest month for the fund-raising efforts undertaken by the Treorchy and District Cancer Research Committee. During our annual street collection, held from June 10 to 12, we collected £1050.95.

On Thursday, 17 June, a coffee evening was held at St Matthew's Church Hall. As usual, the hall was full of our loyal supporters to whom we are extremely indebted. The evening began with our coffee party, cakes and friendly chatter but the highlight of the evening was a musical presentation by pupils of Treorchy Comprehensive School . Their programme was varied, from the traditional to the most modern of songs.

Our thanks are due to Ms Helen May [Conductor] and Mr Jonathan Davies [Accompanist], both of whom are music teachers at the school. It was obvious to the audience that the children enjoyed performing as much as enjoyed listening. Proceeds from the evening amounted to £788.

This brought the total collected in June to £1838.95. This large sum of money has all come through the generosity of residents of our community.
We thank them for their constant support. The research is ongoing and has already led to improvements in preventative procedures and medical care. It is confidently predicted that through research this cruel disease will eventually be conquered.

CARING AND SHARING - The ladies of the former Care and Share Community Shop in Pentre would like to send their good luck wishes and thanks to all their customers, friends and the wider community for all the support they have received over the years.

Margaret Harvey, Sharon Dorr, Margaret Thomas, Barbara Dixon, Cath Radford and Dianne Gilbert closed the community shop in Pentre recently, saying,

“We couldn’t have helped the community, as we did for all that time, without your help and support.

“It has been your donations and gifts which made it possible for us to run the shop and raise funds to help such worthy people and organizations such as the McMillan Nurses, Diabetes, Hospitals, Friends of Y Bwythyn, Rugby Clubs, Boys and Girls Clubs, Cambrian Trust, Special Schools and more.

“We have laughed and cried with our customers, and they with us, and it is with a heavy heart that we have closed our shop door for the last time.

“We will miss every one of you and hope our best wishes and heartfelt thoughts will stay with you all.

“Our remaining stock has been distributed amongst other local charity shops to ensure all your kind donations will go on helping throughout this community that we all love and wish to support so very much.

“Thank you all once again for your kind and generous help and support. It has been a truly wonderful experience for us all.”
