  • RHONDDA CAMEO SOCIETY - The May meeting of the Rhondda Cameo Society was held in the English Congregational Vestry, Ton Pentre. ‘Get Well’ wishes were sent to Eirwen Morgan, Mair Jones, Connie Davies and Dilys Hull.

    Reports were given by Treasurer Betty Hayter and Secretary Megan Morris.

    Names were taken for the trip on Wednesday 29th June to Llanelli and the National Botanical Garden of Wales. The coach will leave Pentre at 9am and pick up at the usual places. Please contact trip organiser Betty Hayter for late additions.

    The guest speaker was Mr Graham Edwards who demonstrated his “Glass Magic” and displayed a variety of beautiful glass objects.

    The vote of thanks was given by Mona Howells.

SCHOOL REUNION - Former students at the Blind School in Bridgend, formerly known as Ysgol Penybont but now called the Erensbridge School, are invited to attend a reunion to be held on Friday 15th of July at the Tennis Club at Bridgend.   • TREORCHY WI - Treorchy WI celebrated VE Day with coffee, tea and refreshments provided by the members for themselves and members of the public. Starting at 2.30pm, and throughout the afternoon, St Matthew’s Church Hall was full of people enjoying themselves. There was a wonderful spirit of camaraderie with the older people remembering the events of 60 years ago when they were children, and the younger ones enjoying and sharing the music from an excellent tape, and joining in the singing and dancing... GENERAL ELECTION - Chris Bryant is re-elected as Member of Parliament for the Rhondda. The voting population in the Rhondda is currently 51,041, of which, 31,148 people voted as follows:

  • Chris Bryant (Labour) 21,198

  • Layton Percy Jones (Plaid Cymru) 4,956

  • Karen Roberts (Liberal Democrat) 3,264

  • Paul Stuart-Smith (Conservative) 1,730

Mr Bryant was re-elected to serve his second term of office with a slightly increased majority of 16,242 with a 2.48% swing from Plaid Cymru to Labour. (2001 General Election Result: Labour majority of 16,047)

  • EVENT - Local charity toogoodtowaste hold a fundraising event at Treorchy Boys & Girls Club (opposite the Co-operative Supermarket) on Thursday 12th May between 11am and 1pm. This event is open to all members of the public who will be able to purchase good quality reusable furniture and collectable items of china.

  • As well as raising funds for the charity this event is promoting the message that it is good to choose recycled and reusable furniture, save your money and save the planet at the same time! For further information on this event contact John Galozzi on 01443 733600

AB Micro (Dinas Rhondda) REUNION - The old characters of the former AB Micro (Dinas) are planning a reunion of ex-workers who are interested in trading memories over a beer or two. Please contact Mike on 01443 434727 or Dave on 01656 659970

  • RHONDDA OAP - The next Rhondda area branch meeting of the National Association OAP Wales will take place on the 10th May at Ystrad Rhondda OAP Hall (near the Star Hotel). The meeting will commence at 10.30am and everyone is welcome to attend.

PLAID CYMRU - At the monthly meeting of the Treorci branch of Plaid Cymru, Councillors Edward Hancock and Cennard Davies expressed concern at the state of the children’s playground. Equipment suitable for older children (8 – 10) has been removed and the general condition of the park leaves a great deal to be desired.

Members regretted that the Town Centre Forum has only met twice since June 2004 and urged the councillors to press for action. Thanks were expressed by the chairman, Bob Knape, to all involved in the Prospect Green project that is progressing satisfactorily.

Neil Evans reported on the very favourable public reaction to the work of the One for All Centre at Treorci Library and wished to thank the staff for their unfailing courtesy and efficiency. Next meeting, Thurs, 19 May at 7.30, Treorci RFC. 

  • FASHION SHOW - The Friends of Ton Pentre Junior School are trying to raise much-needed extra funds for the school and are holding a Fashion Show at Ton Pentre Football Club on Wednesday 18th May at 7pm. Tickets are available now at £3 from the school. 

SURGERIES - Plaid Cymru Councillors hold their next monthly advice surgeries on Friday 6th May. They will be at Cwmparc Welfare Hall from 10am to 10.50am and afterwards at Noddfa Day Centre from 11am to 12 noon. All residents are welcome to attend and no appointments are necessary. At any other time, please contact Councillor Cennard Davies on 435563 or Councillor Edward Hancock on 774785. 

  • CAR BOOT SALES - The summer car boot sales held at Ysbyty George Thomas hospital car park in Treorchy will resume from Saturday 7th May, with the addition of a cake stall as regular feature of this popular fundraising event.

  • Open from 8am until 1pm, on the first Saturday of each month until September, all proceeds will help raise funds for the Fernhill Ward. 

  • The charge for cars is £3 and vans £5. All welcome.
