  • DAMAGE - This was the damage caused by a fire at Treorchy Co-operative store last Friday night (28th April 2006) - yet another occasion that an apparent arson attack has taken place at this store in recent years.

Fire crews attended a fire in the roof space of this single story supermarket at 23:41pm.  Five firefighters using breathing apparatus extinguished the fire, using two hose reel jets supported by a water bowser.  One third of the building roof was severely damaged with the rest of the building suffering smoke damage. (see picture - below left)

The store is only 50 metres from Treorchy railway station, which has been regularly vandalised and where a British Transport Police Officer was brutally attacked last December. (see photo - above right)

SENATORIAL VISIT - On the weekend of the 6th and 7th of May 2006, Rhondda Cynon Taff will be visited by New Hampshire Senator, Lou D’Alessandro.

Senator D’Alessandro was once the British Olympic Basketball Coach and formed many friendships with local people (including Ian Reynolds of Treorchy) when he trained players at The National Sports Centre in Cardiff  during the early Seventies.

Despite a short visit to the UK, Lou’s itinerary allows him to visit his daughter in London who married a Brit and has just given birth to her first child.

Whilst in the Rhondda the Senator will discuss the possibility of twinning Manchester,  New Hampshire (a city he has represented for four consecutive terms) with RCT..

He will meet Mayor Emlyn Jenkins on Saturday 6th of May to discuss the possibility of such a move.  This is a project close to Lou’s heart as he first proposed it 23 years ago when he was first elected to public office.

Later in the day Lou will meet members of the basketball team who toured New Hampshire in 1973 and on Sunday he will visit The National Assembly where he will be given an informal tour by Leighton Andrews A M.

We wish Lou well on his visit and hope he achieves his ambition to form closer ties between Rhondda Cynon Taff and  Manchester  New Hampshire  .

  • SURGERIES - Local Plaid Cymru Councillors hold their next monthly advice surgeries on Friday 5th May.
