FUN FOR ALL THE FAMILY

All accommodation and camping spaces were full and the 'Sorry Full' signs appeared at Dare valley Country Park in Aberdare on the Mayday Bank holiday - scene of the second South Wales Geocaching event.

To the delight of organisers, Derek and Lynne Cummings of Cwmparc, the weather was warm and sunny and the event was declared a huge success.

Right: Geocachers of all ages gather for the event

Campers begun to arrive at Dare Valley for the event on the Thursday preceding the Saturday event, and by the events start on the Saturday morning the camp-site was full of geocachers intent on making the event a three-day bonanza of Geocaching - with many from all parts of England keen to join in the fun with Welsh cachers.

It was a diverse crowd from all walks of life that enjoyed the event including Cardiff scientists 'Welsh Angel' and Sir Climbalot', and Porthcawl school teacher 'Mollyjak'.

Left: Getting started on the day's fun

Children's competitions were held to keep the many children that also camped with their parents amused - with prizes for all that entered, while in-between, all raced to find some of the 11 new geocaches hidden in the area specially for the event, so as to 'log a find'.

Dare Valley's school room was utilized as a centre point - offering information to many people that popped in to see what Geocaching was about - and a place to declare the winners for the various competitions that were held, and also the raffle.

Right: Winding down after a day packed with activities

After all the exertion and excitement of the day, by early evening all had gathered at the camp-site prepared for an evening of chatting and socialising at an informal barbecue, that for some continued till midnight.

On the Sunday, many visitors descended on the Brecon Beacons, intent on finding some of the many geocaches hidden on the Mountains.

The sport of geocaching is a cross between orienteering and a treasure hunt - using a GPS receiver that can be brought for less than £100 - and is enjoyed in just about every country in the world.

It is hoped to maintain a yearly Geocaching event in South Wales and already planning is in the making for next year's event that it is hoped will be held a little West of the Gower.
