March 2005

POOL - The Stag Hotel pool team continued their good run in division two of the Upper Rhondda Pool League when they defeated third placed Ton Con 6-3 to make it ten consecutive victories this season. Steve Hayes and Ceri Hobbs gave the Stag a 2-0 cushion before the visitors pulled one back to reduce the deficit to one frame at 2-1.

However, singles wins for Kevin Moon, Will Coleman and Jamie Cook tied the game up for the Stag at 5-1, and with Hobbs and Matthew Romans winning one of the doubles games, the Stag ran out 6-3 winners to remain on top of the league. Next week the Stag travel to play The Bush, Clydach.

  • REUNION - A Pentre Grammar School reunion will be held on Saturday 22nd October at the Heritage Park Hotel, for former pupils who attended during the 1950’s and 60’s. Tickets are £20 and the evening will include a buffet and glass of wine.

  • Cheques should be made payable to “Mrs M D Dilling” and sent as soon as possible to Mrs D Dilling (Sykes), 41 Marston Close, Walderslade, Chatham, Kent ME5 9BY. The local contact for further information is Mrs G D White who can be phoned on 776535.

NO PARKING - Treorchy Primary School has displayed notices at their Tynybedw Street entrance, warning people not to park on the yellow zigzag lines outside the school. This is a good move by the school and hopefully all drivers will heed the warning.

  • DARTS - Congratulations to the Ton Con ‘A’ darts team for winning this season’s Division Two in the Upper Rhondda Sunday Night League. Well done to all who took part throughout the season and the team would like to thank their captain Wendy Hawkins.

FUNDRAISING - Well done to two Llwynypia ladies, Anna and Marilyn, who along with baby Aliyah, did an impromptu sponsored walk from Treorchy to Tonypandy recently in aid of Comic Relief. They raised a total of £102.92 and would like to thank all who sponsored them.

  • DARTS - The Stag travelled to the Royal Oak for their latest fixture in the Division Two league and, after singles wins for Steve Hayes, Kevin Moon, Jamie Cook and Ceri Hobbs, led 4-2 going into the doubles.

  • With Moon and Cook winning the first doubles, Hayes and Steve Hamer extended their lead to 6-2 before Hobbs and Will Coleman took the final game, to give them an overall winning match score of 7-2. This result makes the Stag unbeaten after nine games.

DARTS Lee Trythall was in ‘180’ mood again, for the fifth time this season, when he helped the Stag team to a 6-1 victory at the Castle, Treherbert.

Trythall, who is playing really well this season, recorded his fifth maximum during his singles game, which he duly won.
  • POOL - The Stag Hotel pool team entertained the Wyndham ‘A’ in their latest fixture and despite losing the opening rack, fought back to take the match 6-3 and stretch their unbeaten run to eight matches.

  • Singles wins for Ceri Hobbs, Kevin Moon, Steve Hayes and Jamie Cook made it 4-2 after the singles, and with Hobbs and Cook taking the opening doubles the Stag had established a match winning lead. A further doubles victory for Moon and Jamie Evans gave them a 6-3 success. Next week the Stag travel to the Royal Oak.

DARTS - The Stag Sunday night darts team went down 5-2 to the Wyndham, despite Lee Trythall giving them a first leg advantage. However, poor finishing by the Treorchy side gave their opponents the edge eventually running out 5-2 winners. Prominent for the Stag were Trythall and Handel Rich.

  • TOP SPOT - It is good to see two local pubs, namely the Lion ‘A’ team and the Stag Hotel, top of their respective divisions of the Upper Rhondda Pool League. The Lion ‘A’ team defeated the Pandy Inn 9-0 in their latest fixture whilst the Stag were 6-3 winners at the Temains ‘A’. Both sides have a bye in first round of the Knockout Cup and in the second round the Lion ‘A’ will play the Royal Oak ‘A’ with the Stag playing the Parc Hotel.

COUNTY SELECTION - Congratulations to Lion pool player Nicky John, who has been selected to play for the County Pool Team.

Nicky is the only player from the Upper Rhondda Pool League to have been selected.

  • DEFEATED - The Stag Hotel Monday night darts team travelled to Cwmparc Legion and were defeated 5-2. The Stag won the opening leg with a double 19 out by Handel Rich, but threw away a number of leg-winning opportunities, eventually going down 5-2.

GOOD SEASON - Congratulations to Treorchy Under 9's Rugby Team who have been enjoying a good season under coach Jeff Finlay, who has been with them for the last two seasons, with some good results coming from the team.

Tries scored so far this season stand at Calum Finlay 69, Ieuan Gowen 10 and Morgan Jones 6, with still a number of games left. The boys are greatful to their team members for their help in making the tries possible.

This team are a good bunch of players and thanks to their parents support it's been a really good season for them.

100% RECORD - The Stag Hotel pool team travelled to Cwmparc to play a local derby against the Tremains ‘A’ and came away 6-3 winners to maintain their 100% record this season.

After Matthew Romans had given the visitors a perfect start, all remaining singles matches could have gone either way, and the hosts will feel a little unlucky to find themselves 5-1 down after the singles matches.

The first doubles went the Stag’s way, with victory for Jamie Cook and Steve Hayes, but back came the Tremains to take the final two doubles to make the score 6-3 in favour of the Treorchy outfit, a result which maintains their unbeaten record having won seven out of seven games so far this season.
