MARCH 2004

CHARITY SHOP - Once again the Care & Share Charity Shop in Pentre has come to the financial aid of a local organisation. On this occasion the Phoenix Theatre and Cinema in Ton Pentre were granted £950, enabling them to refurbish their projector together with a new cinemascope lens, a wide screen lens and improve the tower for changing reels which has helped them to provide a better quality picture and better presentation. As a result, they have been able to provide a better service for members of the community, including young people.

Congratulations on the good work Care & Share are continuing to do in the locality. Without people like yourselves, who are raising much needed finance, things would be much more difficult for many local organisations.

  • TREORCHY OAP - The Annual General Meeting of Treorchy Senior Citizens (OAP) Club will be held at St. Matthew’s Church Hall on Thursday 8th April at 2pm, followed by refreshments and bingo. Members’ contributions for 2004 are now due.

DOG FOULING FINES - From March 2004, dog owners in Rhondda Cynon Taf will face on-the-spot fines of £75 if their pets foul pavements and public places, and owners fail to clean up the mess.  Rhondda Cynon Taf Council will be stepping up its enforcement action – at the same time as blitzing areas that are regularly fouled - with the help of its new mobile street vacuum equipment.

  • The Dog Fouling (fixed penalty) (Wales) Order 2003 has proposed to increase the level of fixed penalty fine for dog fouling from £25 to £75.
  • In 1997 Rhondda Cynon Taf issued an order that designated all public land in the county borough under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act (1996). This empowered the Council to take action against anyone in charge of a dog who fails to remove its faeces from public land.
  • Fixed penalties for dog fouling must be paid within 14 days. Failure to pay can result in prosecution and a maximum fine of £2,500.

GRANT - Cylch Meithrin Cwmparc has received a grant of £2,782 for staff costs, the purchase of a computer and a desk, and educational play equipment from the lottery funded grants programme ‘Award for All Wales’ . The money will mean that the Parent and Toddler group can open for an extra day a week and the new play equipment will greatly boost the facilities available to local children of pre-school age. The computer will also introduce the children to technology before they start school.

Meithrin leader Gill and assistants Karen and Emma were thrilled at receiving the award.

Gil said, “The money will be a big help to our group and will benefit local mothers and pre-school children. The Awards for All Wales grant was easy to apply for and the staff were very helpful. I would definitely recommend the grant programme to other groups.”

Gill, Karen and Emma would like to thank the local Plaid Cymru Councillor Richard Ashton for presenting them with the cheque.
