THREE PEAKS WALK - Best wishes are sent to Dennis Jones, Gareth, Daryl, Rhydian and Michelle Slade-Jones and David Foulkes, who are attempting to walk The Three Peaks over the Easter weekend.

The walk incorporates the three highest mountains in Great Britain , namely Ben Nevis in Scotland , Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales . The total distance covered on the combined walk will be over 6,000 metres.

The aim is to raise much needed funds for Rhondda Riding School for the Disabled which is based in Treherbert. They are wished the best of luck by family and friends.

  • BY-ELECTION - A by-election was held on March 29 for the vacant council seat in the Treorchy, Cwmparc and Ynyswen area, following the sad death of Councillor John Haskins of Ynyswen, who passed away in January.

  • Turnout was 37%. 

  • Result - David John Anstee (Conservative) 161 - Robert Knape (Plaid) 849 - Gordon Maison Lewis (Labour)  

  • Gordon Lewis was elected to serve as Labour Councillor for the Treorchy Ward.

CHOIR PERFORMANCE - A visit to the Wales Millennium Centre last Friday proved a resounding success for Côr Meibion Cwm Rhondda, together with their Musical Director Neil Topping.

Singing on the Tesco Stage (in association with Ty Cerdd) a large audience of about 100 people gathered to listen to the Choir, who opened with their signature tune, Cwm Rhondda and then went on to wow their audience with a mixture of Welsh songs such as Sospan Fach and songs from the shows.

For the finale they were joined on stage by Julia Kennedy, Alison Evans, Gaynor Thomas, Adrian Evans, Dale Evans and Davron Hicks to sing a selection from the musicals.

The Choir are all looking forward to their Annual Concert to be held in St. Peter’s Church, Pentre on Friday 11th May.

The Choir practise at Ton Pentre Junior School on Wednesdays at 7.30pm.They are always looking for new choristers, so why not come along and listen to a rehearsal and maybe join in.

  • AGE CONCERN - Age Concern holds advice surgeries at the One4All centre - situated at Treorchy Library - every Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2pm to 4.30pm.

DOCTOR SERVICE  - Many congratulations are sent to Doctor Gopal of Hermon Street, Surgery who has now been serving the local community as a General Practioner for 25 years.

Dr Gopal and Dr Obaji also have a surgery at Ystrad Road, Pentre, opposite where the old Grand Cinema once stood. Patients and staff would like to send many thanks to Dr Gopal for his kind and dedicated service over the past years.

  • WEDDING FAYRE - Faith, who is the organist of St. Peter's Church, Pentre, and others of the community are planning a wedding fayre at the church on Sunday, June 10, 2007.

  • The organisers are particularly looking for a flautist as well as local people who would wish to perform as solo singers.

  • Also anyone who plays a musical instrument to either accompany the organ as a processional or recessional would be most welcome.

ENERGY ADVICE - South East Wales Energy Efficiency Advice Centre will be holding an energy advice surgery at Treorchy Library on Thursday, March 15, from 10 am until 2pm.

Esther and Elaine will be available to answer questions on energy savings from members of the public. No appointments are necessary, all welcome to come along.

  • QUIZ NIGHT - Friends of Treorchy Primary School hold a ‘Quiz Nite’ on Friday, March 23 in the Junior Hall at Treorchy Primary School at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. 

  • Tickets are £1.50 each and teams are a maximum of 6. Refreshments and Raffle on the night. Tickets are on sale from the school on 773084 or Samantha on 772427  

RHONDDA CAMEO - Rhondda Cameo Society celebrated St David’s Day at its monthly meeting. Members were entertained by Ton Pentre Junior School Choir led by Neil Topping.

They were introduced by the President, Crinllys Davies, and the varied concert programme contained a medley of Welsh songs, plus “I was made in Wales” and the Welsh National Anthem.

Annie Clarke gave an appreciative vote of thanks. Tea and Welsh cakes were then served by members of the committee wearing traditional costume. The afternoon was a ray of sunshine on a grey, rainy day!
