March - April 2010

AUTHOR RETIRES - Congratulations to author Ron Watkins of Ynyswen Road, on the publication of his 30th Western novel ‘Doc Dryden, Gunslinger’.

Written under the pseudonym of Ted Rushgrove, the novel is about a member of an outlaw gang (Clay Dryden) who changes his lifestyle and becomes a respectable doctor whose unfortunate past catches up with him.

In the novel, Clay is befriended by another doctor, David Lewis, (a Welshman) and it didn’t occur to Ron until he was in the process of writing the book that the character is the first Welshman he has put in one of his Western novels.

Ron announces he is now hanging up his spurs with this novel and has stabled the horse. Many years prior to writing his thirty published Western novels, Ron had written five Detective novels and he has now completed his autobiography entitled ‘A Million Words On’ which is yet to be published.

BRASS BAND - The Upper Rhondda Brass Band has qualified for the National Brass Band championships, which will be held in Harrogate on September 26.

The Band gave a superb performance of Saint Saens Variations (Philip Sparke) on Sunday, March 21, at the Brangwyn Hall in Swansea, under the musical direction of Nigel Seaman.

In September the Upper Rhondda Brass Band will be competing at the National Finals, against many other 4th section Bands from all over the UK, including the Dinnington Colliery Band featured with Sue Perkins on Monday evening on BBC2.

Well done to all the members of the Band who worked so hard to make this dream a reality and the message is ‘Roll over Dinnington Colliery Band, because the Upper Rhondda Brass Band is coming to town!’

The trip to Harrogate is going to be costly so the fundraising is about to start in earnest.

YSTRADYFODWG ART SOCIETY - We have a demonstration evening at the Abergorki Hall, Treorchy on Monday, March 8, from 7pm to 9pm .

The artist who will be demonstrating her skills will be Sue McDonagh, who hails from Cowbridge and has her paintings hung in galleries all over Britain.  Her style is bright and colourful, one of her favourite subjects to paint in vivid pastels are children playing on the beach.

As a long time friend of our Society, Sue is very much at home with us and at ease with her subject so that her commentary as she paints is very entertaining for us to listen to.

The members of the society learn a lot from these ‘demos’ but a visitor would also find it a very entertaining evening.

The public are welcome and a small charge of £2.00 with tea or coffee and biscuits about half time through the demo makes for an enjoyable evening all round.

We look forward to meeting with you as it gives local people the chance to see what happens in the Art Society’s studio and, who knows, perhaps that little encouragement to join us and see how you get on as an artist in your own right.
