MARCH 2009 LADIES RUGBY - Tylorstown's Ladies Rugby Team, who celebrate their 10th Anniversary this year, are looking to recruit any ladies over the age of 18 who would like to get fit by training and playing rugby. Well done to 15yr old Adam Walters of Treorchy, and friends Daniel Einon & Thomas Guy, for raising over £300 for comic relief by having their heads shaved at school. Adam had been growing his hair for the past two and a half years - so we hope he's not feeling too cold! * * * BOOKS FOR BOYS - A number of schools participate in the Only Boys Allowed scheme that aims to motivate reluctant boy readers aged 9-11 years. The schools include the primary bases of Williamstown, Tonyrefail, Cwmlai, Tref y Rhug, Hendreforgan, Maerdy, Tylorstown and Ferndale. Numerous organisations have supported the project with free donations of reading materials e.g. The Football Association of Wales (F.A.W.), Cardiff Blues RFC, RCT Libraries, Plugged In Magazine, Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC, The Football Foundation, Longleat, Liverpool FC and Celtic FC. The F.A.W. and Cardiff Blues have also offered match tickets as incentives for the best young male performers. If you can provide any suitable reading resources e.g. sports programmes/magazines, comics or appropriate materials on cars, animals, computer games, etc. call 01443 432186 (during school hours, preferably Mondays, 9.30am-12noon). * * *
BRASS CONTEST The Upper Rhondda Brass Band invites all brass players to their solo and quartet competition to be held at Treorchy Primary School on Saturday, March 28. Competition judges will be Dr Robert Childs, Musical Director of Cory Band and Brass Band Tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music Cardiff, and David Childs, the world-renowned Euphonium Player of Cory Band.Entry forms and details can be obtained from Margaret Shewring either by email to libmns@hotmail.com or by phoning 01443 775804.
