MARCH 2006

UNBEATEN - The Stag Sunday Night Darts Team are still unbeaten after winning their ninth consecutive game 5-2 at Ton Pentre Football Club, to remain top of section two. Next week sees a potential top of the table clash when they travel to play the Griffin ‘A’ team who currently lie in second place.

  • CONCERT - A belated St David’s Day concert was held recently at the Phoenix Theatre, when pupils of Ton Pentre Infants School entertained parents and grandparents alike, in a concert well worth waiting for.

  • Special thanks again to pupils and staff who work so hard to bring such pleasure to their audience. ‘Da Iawn!’

CONGRATULATIONS to Treorchy's JIMMY  WATKINS!

Jimmy Watkins of Treorchy represented Great Britain in Moscow during the IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championships this month.

Achieving two personal best times in the qualifying heats for the 800 metres event, he was the youngest runner competing in the finals and finished in sixth place.

Jimmy has since received his IAAF certificate -  confirming he is now seeded sixth in the world.

He becomes the 11th fastest British runner over 800 metres and also the 11th fastest in the world.

He is also the first British athlete to get to the 800m indoor final since 1993 and has broken the Welsh indoor record by over a second.

PROSPECT GREEN - A petition drawn up by the Cwmparc, Treorchy and Ynyswen Regeneration Group, to save Prospect Green from being sold off by RCT Council, has been placed at the Stag Café in High Street for the public to sign.

Members of the committee will also be calling door to door around our area to deliver an information letter and collect signatures from residents wishing to support the retention and development of the green area behind Treorchy Primary School for local school and community use.

  • SURGERIES - Local Plaid Cymru Councillors hold their next monthly advice surgeries on Friday 3rd March. They will be at Cwmparc Welfare Hall from 10am to 10.50am and afterwards at Noddfa Day Centre from 11am to 12 noon. All residents are welcome to attend and no appointments are necessary. At any other time, please contact Councillor Cennard Davies on 435563 or Councillor Edward Hancock on 774785.

CAMEO SOCIETY - The February meeting of the Rhondda Cameo Society was well attended despite the bitterly cold winter weather. We were pleased to hear that Muriel Richards is making a good recovery from her accident. “Get Well” wishes were sent to Edwina Owen after her recent operation. Our thoughts also went out to Margaret Williams on the loss of her husband.

Minutes of last month’s meeting were read by Mair John, followed by the Treasurer’s report by Betty Hayter. Secretary Megan Morris asked for names for the AGM and tea at Ton Pentre Football Club on March 29th.

The guest speaker, Anwen Williams, was introduced by Crinllys Davies. Her enjoyable light-hearted talk was entitled “An Acting Life For Me”. A bilingual vote of thanks was expressed by Annie Clarke.

Tea, Welsh cakes and bara brith ended this enjoyable afternoon.
