  • ACCIDENT - 22 year-old Matthew Thomas of Troedyrhiw Terrace, Treorchy was killed in a car accident in Ynyswen in the early hours of Saturday, 29th June. The vehicle's 21 year-old driver survived the incident but suffered severe head injuries.

EXHIBITION - The Ystradyfodwg Art Society's Annual Art Exhibition at the Park & Dare Theatre was cancelled following the sudden death of local artist Neville Yeo on the afternoon of Thursday, 27th June.

DISCUSSION - Valleys First will be holding an event to discuss the future of the valleys from a younger persons' perspective at the Pop Factory in Porth this Friday (June 21st) at 7PM. Youth groups from all the Valleys First constituencies have been invited.

THANKS - 85yr-old Hilda Davies of Treorchy would like to thank the young man who found her purse and held on to it safely for a week until he could return it to her - after she had lost her pension near the vegetable stall in Treorchy market where the young man works each week.

  • EXHIBITION - Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council will mark the success of the Royal visit by holding an exhibition of photographs taken at Treorchy and at the Rhondda Heritage Park. The exhibition will open at the Rhondda Heritage Park on Friday, June 21, 2002. 

    The Council will be accepting orders from local people for re-prints of the photographs on display at the exhibition - a charge will be made to reflect the cost of photographic printing, materials, administration, postage and packing. 

CYCLISTS - The National Kidney Research Fund in Wales seeks Cyclists of all ages to take part in its annual Champagne cycle ride from Blackpool Tower on 31st August to the Eiffel Tower in Paris on 8th September. Contact 01633 889407 for information.

  • CHESS - Cardiff Chess Club hold their summer tournaments at 7.15pm each Tuesday at Cardiff YMCA in The Walk, in June, July and August. Admission is free & all are welcome to take part.

  • STORYTELLING - An International Storytelling Festival is to be held in the Vale of Glamorgan at  St. Donat's Castle from Friday 5th July to Sunday 7th July - featuring storytellers from the Caribbean, North and South America and Wales - spanning 3,000 years of storytelling tradition. BEACONS BUS - The Beacons Sunday Bus service operating from Cardiff and the Rhondda Fawr to Brecon is running again until 26th August. The services have cycle carrying trailers and run to the National Park Mountain Centre, Garwnant Forest Visitors Centre, Hay-on-Wye, the National Botanical Gardens and Brecon Mountain railways.   • REUNION - Students at the Welsh College of Music and Drama during the 1960's are invited to a reunion on Saturday 22nd June at 1pm with a Lord Mayor's reception at Cardiff Castle followed by a reception at the new Anthony Hopkins Centre. CLAIMS - Ex-miners suffering from Vibration White Finger, otherwise known as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, have until 31st October 2002 to make a claim against the Department of Trade and Industry. The condition is a form of Reynaud's Disease and is triggered by long use of vibrating machine tools - causing tingling & numbness in fingers, whiteness & aching in fingertips, and blood circulation problems which can lead to gangrene.

  • ARCHAEOLOGY - Archaeology Cymru is holding a membership drive. The organisation holds digs in the Vale of Glamorgan and Bridgend areas. Contact Karl-James Langford on 01446 781585.

BURGLARY - Cardiff Neighbourhood Watch members issued a warning against revealing your home address over the phone while at work - after a spate of bogus calls in the area to women in the workplace, from conmen pretending to be from the Post Office, offering gift vouchers & asking for postcodes and home addresses for their delivery.  90% of women confirming addresses have been subsequently burgled.

  • AWARDS - Pontypridd College has won 2 awards - for basic skills and bilingual development - at the Fforwm Annual Conference, which represents further education colleges across Wales.

ASSAULTS - A 12 year-old boy has been interviewed by police after 8 women were indecently assaulted within a 48 hour period in the Tonypandy area.

  • RATS - Residents in Vicarage Terrace claimed a rat infestation has not abated - since April 2001 - despite efforts by RCT Council's Pest Control Services. 56 residents have signed a petition of complaint to the local council. Around 40 homes are claimed to be affected.

BOWLS - Cardiff Blind Bowls Club meets every Saturday from 2pm to 5pm at Howard Garden Bowling Club. Blind and partially sighted new members are welcome to join. Contact Sanda Fish on 029 2021 2914.

  • LAUNCH - The official launch of the "Walking the Way to Health" scheme will take place on Tuesday June 18th at Penpych Primary School at 3.30pm.  Roy Noble, TV and Radio Presenter will be there to give the scheme his seal of approval.  'Demonstration walks' and afternoon tea will be available.  Anyone wishing to attend should contact Will Beer, Rhondda Cynon Taff Local Health Group on 01443 824396.

OPEN DAY - Rhondda Kinder Care holds an open day on Friday 14th June at Bethlehem Chapel, Treorchy. A longstanding parent and toddler service registered with RCT Council and established since 1981.   • YNYSWEN HALL - Each week at the hall is Sequence & Modern Dancing - Mondays, 2 - 4.30pm. Line Dancing - Tuesdays, 2pm - 4.30pm. Aikido - Tues 7 - 9pm, & Sat 10am - 12pm.   • LEFT OUT - National Assembly Culture Minister Jenny Randerson announced that 44% of Welsh homes cannot receive digital terrestrial television and 1.7% also cannot receive analogue TV either.

DEATHS - The number of drug-related deaths in Wales has risen significantly according to figures from the National Assembly. Almost 1,100 drug-related poisoning deaths were recorded over the last 8 years, with nearly 450 due to drug misuse involving controlled substances.
