The Heritage Singers - A very successful fund raising evening was held at St Barnabus Church, Trehafod, in May.

The Heritage Singers, under the musical directorship of Mrs Hannah Ffrancon-Davies, sang a wide variety of music from Musicals, Jazz and traditional Welsh music. The proceeds of the evening to be split between the Church and the Choir.

The Choir wish to thank the following organisations who donated prizes for the raffle . Heritage Parc. Heritage Parc Hotel, Bertie - Trehafod, Gala Bingo Nantgarw, Co-operative Store, Porth Gay Jones and all the many other people who donate prizes, helped with the catering and contributed to a very successful evening.

The Heritage Choir, which commenced 4 years ago, moves from strength to strength. The next concert will be in the Heritage Park Trehafod on the 21st June 2008 to mark the 25th anniversary of the closure of the Lewis Merthyr and Ty Mawr Collieries.

The Choir has had a very successful year performing at various venues which included singing with Iris Williams in a commemorative concert to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Falklands War and the Mayors Charity Auction in the Heritage Park Hotel. The Choir is also available for weddings etc.

A warm welcome is extended to any Ladies who wish to join. The Choir meet in St Barnabus Church Trehafod on Thursday evenings. You do not need to read music, just a willingness to learn.

  • ANIMAL AID CHARITY SHOP - Friends of the Animals would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the community for their support. People have been so kind offering donated items for re-sale in the Charity Shop in Ton Pentre and this is very much appreciated.
  • Special thanks to those who give their time to help run the shop and to L’Oreal for their donation of goods for the weekly raffle prizes. Also, thanks to the shop owner Saleem, who has also been very supportive.

PACT MEETING - The next local community policing PACT meeting will be held on July 1 at Ty Bethania, Herbert Street, Treorchy at 6pm. All are welcome to come along and discuss local issues of concern and help determine our local community support policing priorities for the month ahead.

The current priorities (set at last month’s meeting) are;

  1. Anti-social behaviour at the Oval in Treorchy
  2. Parking issues near Treporchy Primary School
  3. No priority assigned.

  • CHRISTIAN AID - All the churches in the Treorci area would like to thank the public for their generous support during Christian Aid Week.

  • The total sum collected was £1738.29 with the individual churches collecting as follows: Bethlehem - £380.00; Hermon - £1,043.29; Providence - £200.00 and St Matthews' Church - £115.00.

  • The Treasurer, Mrs Mary Price of Regent St, is grateful to all those who collected for this very worthy cause.Bottom of Form

UPPER RHONDDA BRASS BAND - The young players from The Upper Rhondda Brass Band, based at the Parc Hall in Cwmparc, travelled to Bideford, North Devon on Saturday, June 14 to compete at the 19th Annual Solo and Quartet Contest held there.

There were 22 bleary eyed youngsters waiting to board the coach when they set off from Treorchy at 6am. However it was well worth the long journey as many prizes were won by these young players.
The winners are as follows;

  • Slow Melody 9years & Under - 1st place Livia Jones, 2nd place Charlotte Lewis, 3rd place Dewi Kinsey.
  • Slow Melody 10-12 years, 1st place - Hollie Jones, 2nd place - Lewis Rees.
  • Slow Melody 13-15 years, 2nd place - Ieuan Williams.
  • Slow Melody 16-18 years, 2nd place - Alanah Moulsdale.
  • Slow Melody 19 years and over, 1st place - Glen Philp.
  • Air Varie 17 years and under, 2nd place - Ieuan Williams, 3rd place - Lewis Rees.
  • Duet 18years and over, 1st place - Alanah Moulsdale and Glen Philp, 3rd place - Sharon Cook and Ieuan Williams.
  • Quartet 17 years and under, 1st place - Upper Rhondda Rebels Quartet (The 7th year running that this class has been won by this Band)
  • Quartet 18 years and over, 3rd place - The Upper Rhondda Quartet.

YOUTH CENTRE NEWS - Treorchy Youth Centre Junior and Senior Football teams are taking part in a competition at the Astroturf pitch in Pontypridd on Saturday, June 14. Some of the team are also going to take part in a coaching programme at Nantymoel Boys and Girls Club in Bridgend, at the end of June to gain and improve their skills.

The Youth Centre is off on a trip to Oakwood Theme park on June 21.

Our plants are thriving at the Allotment, cabbages were planted by Youth Centre Members on June 4, our runner beans have started to climb the sticks, beetroot is growing as well as the peas so we must be doing something right!

Thanks to the Staff who are overseeing the Allotment project - Rebecca Williams, Mark Davies and Jennifer Terry. Also thanks for the support of Treorchy Allotments member Phil, who has supported the staff and Youth Centre Members. Some of the produce will be given to Ystrad Ffechan Home for the Elderly where the Youth Centre Members also planted the flowers in tubs for Spring and also bulbs in the Autumn. The Youth Centre finances this project.

Good news, Carl Tidball, the volunteer dance Coach, is back in the Centre after his knee operation and is ready to go forward with future developments with the young people involved in the Dance activities.

Sarah Evans, the newly elected Treorchy Councillor, is to have a surgery at the Youth Centre on the first Wednesday each month from 6 till 7.00 for young people, so any young people from 11 to 25 are welcome to come and see her there with any issues or ideas they have.

Finally, Jennifer Terry would like to thank all the youth members, and staff at the centre for supporting all the various projects that have taken place at the Treorchy Youth Centre this year, another eventful year with lots of success.

  • PLAY SESSIONS - There are currently FREE toddler play sessions held at Treorchy Library. Come and join in the fun at your local library for free play sessions with the RCT Language and Play team. 
  • Sessions run every Monday morning from 10am to 11am and cater for children age 0-4yrs. 
  • Here you can enjoy storytelling sessions with puppets, songs and rhymes, and creative activities.

THE HERITAGE SINGERS - A warm welcome is extended to all ladies who would like join The Heritage Singers. We have had a very successful year and look forward to the new season.

We hold rehearsals in St Barnabus Church, Trehafod at 7.15 every Thursday evening. The Heritage Singers is made up of Ladies from Rhondda Fawr and Rhondda Fach as well as other areas.

If transport is a problem it might be possible to arrange lifts.

  • CAMEO - The Rhondda Cameo Society held its regular monthly meeting in May, after a successful trip to Hereford in April. Members were pleased to hear that Lilwen Davies was making a good recovery from her recent operation. The secretary’s report was then given by Megan Morris.
  • The guest speaker was Mr Howard England who showed excellent slides of the extensive renovation work at Dyffryn Gardens. John Cory was the inspired owner of this magnificent country home. The gardens are Grade I listed and feature a vast array of unusual plants. The new facilities for visitors include a gift shop and tea rooms. The Pompeian Garden is licensed for civil wedding ceremonies and provides an ideal venue for celebrations of all kinds.
  • Crinllys Davies gave an appreciative vote of thanks to Mr England for his informative talk.
  • Our next trip, on Wednesday June 25, will be to Penarth and Dyffryn Gardens. Friends are welcome to join us on this occasion.

BRASS BAND - The third Gwent Youth Brass Solo & Quartet Contest took place on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at the YMCA Centre, Newport.

It was a very successful day with one hundred and forty brass players taking part representing bands and schools within Greater Gwent, plus entries from Upper Rhondda Brass Band, the Forest of Dean and Camborne in Cornwall.

The adjudicators for the day were Owen Farr and Christopher Thomas from the Cory Band, Owen kindly appearing courtesy of York Instruments. 

Before the announcement of the results of the Contest, Owen and Christopher displayed why they are at the top of their profession, playing a solo each and holding the audience spell bound and in the palm of their hands.

Following the support and success of this event, the date of next year’s Contest will be Saturday, May 30th, 2009.

The Upper Rhondda brass band entrants gained the following results:

  • Class C Slow Melody 14 & 15 years - 3rd place Ieuan Williams (Upper Rhondda Band)
  • Class D Air Varie 15 years & under - 1st place Ieuan Williams (Upper Rhondda Band), 3rd place Lewis Rees (Upper Rhondda Band)
  • Class F Slow Melody 16 – 18 years - 2nd place Alanah Moulsdale (Upper Rhondda Band)

SURGERIES - Treorchy Ward Plaid Cymru Councillors are holding three surgeries during the first week of each month to enable members of the public to discuss local issues with them.

On the first Wednesday of each month, starting in July, Councillor Sera Evans will be holding a surgery in Treorchy Youth Centre from 5.30pm until 6.30pm for over 18s and from 6.30pm until 7pm for under 18s.

In addition, Councillors Cennard Davies and Edward Hancock will hold their surgeries on the first Friday of each month from 10am until 11am in Noddfa Day Centre, and from 11am until 12 noon in Cwmparc Community Centre.

There is no need to make an appointment.
