RHONDDA CAMEO - The Rhondda Cameo Society (Come And Meet Each Other) July meeting was very well-attended. Megan Morris, President, was absent through illness so the meeting was chaired by Crinllys Davies. We send Megan our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Councillor Paul Cannon was the guest speaker. He gave us a fascinating glimpse into his varied lifetime experiences and was formally thanked by Mona Howells.

On Wednesday, August 26, there will be a shopping trip to Port Talbot followed by lunch at the Rest Bay Hotel, Porthcawl. Contact Betty Hayter on 434209 with names for the trip.

  • CHRISTIAN AID COLLECTION - Four Treorci churches - Bethlehem, Hermon, Providence and St Matthews, between them raised £1792.08 during Christian Aid Week.

  • The treasurer, Mrs Mary Price (Hermon) wishes to thank all those who collected for this very worthy cause and also to all those who contributed so generously.

NEW MANAGEMENT - The Red Cow is now under new management. New and old customers are welcome from 12 noon to 11pm every day. Meals are available from 12noon to 8pm.

  • MALE VOICE CHOIR - Cor Meibion Cwm Rhondda performed a lunchtime concert in St. Davids Cathedral on Saturday, July 18.

  • A very large appreciative audience attended the concert, and were delighted with the programme that their Musical Director Neil Topping had chosen.
    The choir are busy rehearsing for their future performances in early September, a wedding and concert in the Exeter area, when choristers and partners will spend the weekend in the area.

  • October sees them travel to perform in the school in Rugby for the local Lions club.

  • Rehearsals are held in Ton-Pentre Junior School on Wednesday evening from 7.30pm.

  • New choristers always welcome, why not come along and listen and maybe join in.

RETIRING - The Head Teacher of Ton-Pentre Infants School will be retiring this year after 21 years and to mark this special occasion, the school are hosting a concert called "TON HAS TALENT" which will be held at the Phoenix Theatre (The Old Working Men's Hall) on July 16.

The proceeds from this concert will be given to 'The Noah's Ark Appeal' which supports the ONLY Children's Hospital in Wales.

The school invites any past pupils and staff to contact the school on 01443 435438 if they wish to attend or perform in any way.

Huw Evans, a former pupil, and Neil Topping who is a former staff member, are the musical directors and both school choirs will be participating alongside our guests. Children aged between 3 to 11 years will join our past pupils and there will be several celebrity guests present from the field of sport.

Mrs Barnett would also love to hear from pupils who she taught during her days as a teacher at Ynyswen and Porth Infants and would like everyone to know that she is not retiring but ‘changing her direction’ to embrace the future!

Tickets will be on sale at both the Infants and Junior Schools on 01443 435438/435436 and please contact the Secretaries, Mrs Bailey and Mrs Gwyn on these numbers.

Alternatively please contact any member of the school staff if you wish to support this worthy cause by either attending the concert or giving a donation.

  • PACT - Our next Ynyswen PACT (Police and Community Together) meeting will be held at Penyrenglyn Primary School on Monday, July 13 at 6pm.

  • This month’s priority is Criminal Damage and Anti-Social Behaviour on the bowling green and surrounding area at Treherbert Park. All Welcome.

  • Also the Annual Young Ladies (7-8 years) Rhondda Girls Football Challenge Shield, sponsored and organized by South Wales staff is to kick off on June 19 at the Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad, at 9am.

  • Our area is represented by the girls from Penyrenglyn Primary School - ‘COME ON THE PENGERS!’

FUN DAY - Asda Tonypandy will be holding a family fun day with guest appearances from Spongbob Squarepants and Lazy Town.

It will be held on Sunday, July 12 at Tylorstown Rugby Field and Clubhouse from 2pm till late.

Entry fee is £1 per adult and accompanied children under 14yrs go free.

Entertainment includes bouncy castle, sporting events, live music, refreshments and lots more.

All proceeds will be going to the pedal power charity who provide bicycles for under-privileged children.

CHURCH FETE

Despite the dreadful weather it was a successful day for St. John's Church, Ton Pentre when they held their annual garden party in the church grounds on July 4. 

Doors opened at 1pm and a range of stalls and activities were on offer - along with games and the usual raffles.

They raised over a £1,000 and hope to raise more when the grand prize draw is finally completed during the harvest festival supper in October.

LADIES EVENING - Ladies, come along to Zion Baptist Church, Pentre, on Thursday evening, July 2, and see the story of Joshua.

  • SKY DIVE - On Saturday, June 27, Kimberley Baker of Brynhyfryd Street, Ynyswen, did a self-funded sponsored sky dive from Swansea airfield in aid of Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice and collected the sum of £700 from very generous sponsors.

  • Congratulations to Kimberley from all of her family and friends.

QUIZ NIGHT - A quiz night will be held in Treorchy RAFA Club on Friday, June 26, starting at 7.30pm.

Entry is £2 per person and all proceeds will be in aid of Dylan’s Den after school club. All Welcome.

  • CAMEO TRIP - Rhondda CAMEO Society (Come and Meet Each Other) are off on a trip to Burnham-on-Sea and Garden World on Wednesday, June 24.

MYELOMA UK - A Charity Band Night, in aid of Myeloma UK, will be held at the Ystrad Rhondda Sports Centre on Friday, June 19.

  • MEETING CANCELLED - It is with great regret that Ton Pentre Women's Institute announces there will be no Members' meeting on Thursday, June 18 as previously announced. This is due to holidays, ill-health and other absences by Committee members.

  • The next meeting will therefore now be held on Thursday, July 9, when the Speaker will be Mervyn Flemying from Severn Area Rescue Association.

  • The Competition will be "A Seascape Photograph".

PETER PAN - Act 1 Theatre Group presents JM Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan - The Play’ at the Phoenix Theatre, Ton Pentre, from June 16 to June 20.

Curtain rises for the Tuesday to Friday night performances at 7pm and a little earlier on Saturday at 5pm.

BRASS BAND - The young members of the Upper Rhondda Brass Band competed in the 20th Bideford (North Devon) slow melody and quartet competition on Saturday, June 13, at The Bideford College Theatre and achieved the following good results.

  • Class 1 Slow Melody (9 and under) - 1st place Charlotte Lewis.

  • Class 2 Slow Melody (10-12) - 1st place Livia Jones, 2nd place Owen Gillard, 3rd place Iwan Thomas.

  • Class 3 Slow Melody (13-15) - 1st place Lewis Rees, 3rd place Gavin Moulsdale.

  • Class 4 Slow Melody (16-18) - 1st place Alanah Moulsdale.

  • Class 5 Slow Melody (19 and over) - 1st place Glen Philp, 2nd place Gareth Robinson.

  • Class 6 Air Varie (17 and under) - 1st place Lewis Rees.

  • Class 7 Air Varie (18 and over) - 1st place Glen Philp.

  • Class 9 Duet (18 and over) - 1st place Alanah Moulsdale and Glen Philp, 3rd place Andrew West and Cerwyn West.

  • Class 10 Quartet (17 and under) - 1st place Upper Rhondda Golden Cornets (Ieuan Reed, Lowrie Reed, Gavin Moulsdale and Hollie Jones).

  • Hollie Jones won the prize for the best soloist in this Quartet.

  • Class 11 Quartet (18 and over) - 2nd place Upper Rhondda Bones (David Mace, Gareth Robinson, Wyndham Williams and Andrew West)

  • Class 12 Ensemble - 3rd place Upper Rhondda Ensemble.

The Band is very happy with these results and would like to thank Wyndham Williams for all the hard work he puts into getting the soloists ready for these competitions.

Also the Band would like to thank the Vicar and the Church Hall Committee of St George's Church in Cwmparc for their brilliant support by allowing the Band to rehearse as often as was needed.

  • CAR BOOT - A Car Boot Sale will be held at Treorchy Primary schoolyard on Saturday, June 13.

  • The sale opens at 8am for traders and at 9am for buyers.

  • Cost is £5 per car and £10 for trade.

  • If the weather is wet the sale will be held inside the school canteen.

CHARITY WALK - A Memory & Wish Walk will take place on Sunday, June 7, starting from Ton Pentre Football Club, in aid of four local charities - Rhondda Breast Friends, LATCH, BETH and Stoma Care.

There is no minimum limit to how far you walk along the planned route and a family fun day has been planned with entertainment and children’s activities.

  • SURGERIES - Councillors Cennard Davies and Edward Hancock hold a Surgery on the first Friday of each month at Cwmparc Community Centre (Parc Hall) from 10am until 10.50am, and at Noddfa Day Centre, Treorchy from 11am until 12 noon.

  • Their next surgeries will take place on Friday, June 5.

  • Cllr. Sêra Evans-Fear holds two evening surgeries each month, alongside the Treorchy and Ynyswen PACT meetings.

  • Any member of the ward is welcome to attend any of the surgeries and there is no need to make an appointment.

LADIES EVENING - On Thursday evening, June 4, we have another of our Ladies Nights in Zion Baptist Chapel, Pentre, and all ladies are most welcome to come along.

As the time of June weddings draw near, this month we welcome Mrs Shirley James who will give us a talk on Wedding Traditions, which I am sure many of us will find very interesting.

Don’t forget we have tea and biscuits at 6.45pm and our meetings last until approximately 8.30pm.

  • PACT - The next PACT (Police and Communities Together) meeting will be held at Penyrenglyn Primary School on Monday, June 1, at 6pm, when it is hoped that someone from RCT Council will be attending to discuss the issue of Fly Tipping.

  • All members of the public with an interest in the Ynyswen and Penyrenglyn areas are welcome to attend and help determine up to three local priorities for attention over the coming month.
