FINED - Magistrates have fined a tyre services proprietor £2,500 for depositing tyres at a community bonfire in Tonyrefail. A total of 79 tyres were removed from the site by RCT Council's clean-up team, after residents reported the illegal dumping of up to 30 tyres from a blue van.
RESCUE - A two year-old dog was rescued after more than 7hours from an 18inch wide mountain crevice on the Bwlch mountain, after disappearing while walking with his owners near the forestry. The unmarked crevice is 6 metres deep and was covered by grass and brambles.
STROKE - An audit by the Royal College of Physicians has revealed that only 36% of stroke patients spend any time at all in a specialised stroke unit, causing the unnecessary death of 6,000 people each year. Evidence suggests that 19% less people would die at the time of their stroke and 29% less would end up dead or severely disabled, if they could be given care in a specialist unit.
SHOPLIFTING - Two Rhondda sisters have pleaded guilty to shoplifting from a Cardiff supermarket on 13th June. Deborah Mortimer of Porth and Christine Griffiths of Cymmer, who admitted stealing more than £60 worth of goods, were given conditional discharges (12 and 24 months respectively) and both were fined £55 costs.
STRIKE - Council workers have called for another national day strike throughout the UK on Wednesday 14th August. Three public sector unions - the GMB, Unison and the TGWU - will also strike for a day in September unless employers increase their 3% pay rise offer to 6%. The 24-hour action will shut schools, leisure centres and libraries, and street cleaning or refuse collections will also be halted for the day.
PASSPORTS - Post Offices throughout Wales are piloting a new service on behalf of the UK Passport Service and will now provide a passport in just one week. The service will cost £8.75 and will include the basic checking of completed applications, dispatch by special delivery to the Newport Passport Office and delivery of the new passport by first class post.

FESTIVAL - The Big Cheese Festival will be held in Caerphilly on Saturday 27th July and Sunday 28th July. STARDOM - The makers of Big Brother have teamed up with the BBC for a television production which will follow 12 "Fame Academy" students as they are put through their star-training paces. Each week 1 student not making the grade will have to leave the programme. CANNABIS - More than 100 cannabis plants, artificial lighting and stolen property were discovered at a home in Llewellyn Street, Pentre after police received an anonymous tip-off. Two Southampton men have been charged. *A Southampton University student, Daniel Peter Gormley, 23, was later sentenced to 12months imprisonment at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court.
