JULY 2007

RHONDDA CAMEO - At the July meeting of the Rhondda Cameo Society, members were greeted by the President Mrs Crinllys Davies, and wishes for a good recovery were expressed for those unable to attend through illness. Minutes of the last meeting were read by Mair John and the Treasurer’s report was given by Betty Hayter.

The guest speaker, Beryl Rowe, then gave a fascinating talk on women’s role during World War II, including her own personal experiences in London, Coventry and Treorchy. There were many contributions from members who recounted their wartime memories, and an appreciative vote of thanks was given by Annie Clarke. Names are now being taken for a Mystery Trip on Wednesday, August 29, when friends of Cameo are welcome to join us.

  • SRI LANKA VISIT - Leaving recently again for Colombo, Sri-Lanca, was Pastor Andrew Jenkins, originally from Ynyswen, who flew out from Heathrow on Tuesday, July 24. On this occasion Andrew was leading a group of young people from Walsall, in the Midlands, who have set up an organisation called MAD (Make a Difference).

  • This group has won the Best in Britain Award for 2007 for Youth Services and their fundraising over the past two years will enable them to finance a children’s playground which these young people are going to develop and build. Andrew was invited to advise the Walsall group in a consultancy role, to facilitate this visit, and the BBC is closely following the group’s adventure, which will include a reception at the Government’s High Commission in Colombo. The group will also make a special visit to the town of Galle-Fort, arranged by Andrew, in which over 20,000 people tragically perished in the Tsunami wave.

  • In addition to his every-day activities as the resident Minister of Newport’s Gateway Church, Andrew is a member of the Board of ‘Action Overseas’, the missionary arm of the Apostolic Church within the United Kingdom and is their Asia representative.

  • In recent years, Andrew has been directly involved in supporting victims of two major natural disasters, the Asian Tsunami and the Pakistan Earthquake. Within a week of the Tsunami hitting Sri-Lanca, he was co-ordinating the humanitarian relief operation for Action Overseas and has also played a similar role in the North West Frontier of Pakistan.

  • Prior to this Andrew was Action Overseas representative in Eastern Europe, Latvia in particular, and had considerable experience helping victims of torture and war from countries such as Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo and Benin.

  • Before becoming a Church Minister Andrew was proud to be a Rhondda Coal Miner, having worked in Tymawr/Lewis Merthyr, Cwm Llanwit Fardre and Taff Merthyr Collieries at the coal-face and as an underground official. Working underground in a harsh environment has helped prepare him for the horrific images he has encountered first-hand in some of the world’s most troubled and hostile areas. Andrew is sent all good wishes for his continued endeavours.
