RHONDDA CAMEO SOCIETY - At the Rhondda Cameo Society’s July meeting, members stood in respectful memory of Mrs Glenys Jones, Ystrad.

‘Get Well’ wishes were sent to those unable to attend. Secretary Mrs Megan Morris then announced some special forthcoming events, starting with a Mystery Trip on Wednesday, September 7th.

She introduced the guest speaker, author and local historian Mr Ken Baker. He delighted the audience with stories of old Wattstown and his latest book “Cwtch”. An appreciative vote of thanks was given by Annie Clarke.

Names of members and friends can now be given for the Mystery Trip.

  • CAR BOOT SALE - A car boot sale and cake stall will be held at Ysbyty George Thomas’ car park on Saturday, August 6th starting from 8am. Cars £4 and Vans £5. The monthly car boot sales will end in September, so don’t miss this chance to clear out your unwanted items now and make some cash this summer!Or why not take a stroll over and see what bargains you can pick up? All proceeds to the Fernhill Ward at the hospital.

SURGERIES CANCELLED - Plaid Cymru Councillors’ regular advice surgeries have been cancelled for the month of August. Residents are welcome to contact Councillor Cennard Davies on 435563 or Councillor Edward Hancock on 774785 for any enquiries.

  • FAMILY EVENT - Treorchy RFC is holding a 10’z rugby knockout tournament and fete at the Cae Mawr field in Treorchy on Saturday 13th August. A fun day out for all the family, starting from 12 noon onwards, as eight rugby teams compete in the knockout challenge. The fete, which will run alongside on the day, will include a beer tent, bouncy castle and variety of stalls.

RHONDDA CAMEO SOCIETY - Members and friends of the Rhondda Cameo Society enjoyed their summer day trip to Llanelli. The weather was kind, and after lunch the party proceeded to the National Botanical Garden of Wales, near Carmarthen. 

A mini bus provided transport from the entrance rotunda, up the sloped Broadway, past the lake to the Great Domed Glasshouse. It was delightful to see the many flowers, bushes and trees in full bloom. The tearooms provided welcome refreshments, followed by a visit to the Garden Centre to buy flowering plants as a memento. All agreed that the Botanical Garden is a Welsh National Treasure.

Our next meeting is Wednesday July 27th when Angela Phillips will give a talk on “Far East to Borneo”.

  • GOSPEL MUSICAL - A gospel musical and drama entitled ‘The King is coming back’ will be performed by Newton Aycliffe’s children and youth choir, sporting a cast of twenty-five enthusiastic and energetic youngsters portraying the second coming of Christ. The event is for one night only and is held at Gosen Christian Centre, 31 Bute Street, Treorchy and is suitable for all the family. Admission is free. FIRE - Two firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, used one hose reel to extinguish a fire involving the dust extraction unit in a single-storey portacabin outbuilding - used as a metal finishing shop - at Cae Mawr Industrial Estate, Treorchy in the early hours of 12th July.

  • POOL COMPETITION - The Griffin Inn, Pentre will be holding a pool competition from Monday 18th July with cash prizes for the eventual four finalists.  Entry is £3 per player. To register, phone 432879.

YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAMME - RCT County Borough Council’s Education Service has arranged a summer programme of events for youngsters in our area. All events are free of charge, but anyone interested will have to pre-book their place by contacting Crawshay Education Centre on 01443 424456 or contact your local youth leaders Emma, Jill or Jim on 07799 131977 / 07799131979 / 07795391759 for an application form. 

The events planned are as follows.

  • 25th, 26th & 27th July - Guitar and drum workshops at Maerdy Youth Centre 10am to 2pm.

  • 26th & 28th July – Graphic Art & Craft at Treherbert Youth Centre 10am to 3.30pm.

  • 26th July – An evening with our friends from Zimbabwe at Treherbert Youth Centre 6.30 to 9.30pm.

  • 28th, 29th & 30th July – Residential Summer Camp at Llangorse with an opportunity to take part in Orienteering, Canoeing, Climbing, Camp Craft and Wild Games. All meals and equipment supplied.

  • 28th July – Orienteering at Maerdy Youth Centre 10am to 2pm.

  • 28th July – An afternoon with our friends from Zimbabwe at Waun Wen Youth Centre 2pm to 5pm.

  • 28th & 29th July – Try out your Circus Skills at Treherbert Youth Centre 10am to 3.30pm.

  • 2nd 3rd & 4th August – Try out our new Digi Lab facilities at Crawshay Street, Pentre 10am to 2pm.

  • 2nd to 5th August – Hair & Beauty Workshop at Treherbert Youth Centre 10am to 3.30pm.

  • 8th to 12th August – Splash Programme.

  • 9th & 11th August – Creative Dance Workshop at Treherbert Youth Centre 10am to 3.30pm.

  • 11th & 12th August – Activity days including climbing wall at Maerdy Youth Centre 10am to 2pm.

  • 13th August – Sporting Activity Day at Waun Wen Community Centre 12 to 3pm.

  • 15th August – Mega Drive Workshop at Maerdy Youth Centre 10am to 2pm.

It will be a case of first come first served for the free places at all events, so don’t delay - make your enquiries now!

 

THANKS - The residents at Ty Pentwyn Nursing Home would like to thank everyone who organised and attended the recent Annual Summer Fete, which was attended this year by a capacity crowd of friends and relatives who turned up to help make the day a success.

Special thanks to the two nursing sisters Maureen Gronow and Susan Oliver who worked tirelessly throughout the day for the residents, with many thanks also to the management and matron.

Thanks also to the ‘Gamblers’ who performed ‘Country and Western’ songs dressed in their cowboy outfits, and also to the gentleman from Gelli who danced along for the residents’ and visitors’ entertainment. It was a truly wonderful afternoon and enjoyed by all.

ANTIQUE FAIR - The popular ‘Amber Fairs’ return to the Park and Dare on Saturday 9th July from 10am to 4pm, with another display of antiques and collectables. Featuring Militaria, Coins, Jewellery and Porcelain, with something for everyone, and at prices to suit all pockets. Entrance costs just 50p and items can be bought, sold or just brought along for a valuation.
