SCHOOL BAND - A New Year Concert to launch the 50th anniversary of Treorchy Comprehensive School Band took place on Saturday, January 11th 2003 at Treorchy Comprehensive School, beginning with an outdoor ceremonial fanfare, entitled "TCSB 2003" composed by Music teacher and Director of TCSB Debbie Hosking. Balloons and fireworks also heralded the unique event, before TCS Senior and Junior Band and some of the school's most talented vocalists performed with the acclaimed and classically trained singer Helen May to present a musical programme in the Main Hall of the school. *see TSCB's own pages under "local societies" in our magazine section.

  • JAILED - Gaynor Griffiths, 45, of Tynewydd has been jailed for six months for failing to disclose she was living with the father of her child - who worked for the Benefits Agency - while she was claiming Income Support between Feb 3rd 2000 and March 19th 2002. The court was asked to take into consideration a further 285 offences dating back to October 1996.

FREE TRAINING - The University of Glamorgan's scheme of offering up to 100 hours of free language training to business people has been extended - so more can take part - up to August 2003. Free tuition and guidance in Welsh and foreign languages is available to employees of small businesses within the Objective One Area in Wales.   • COMPUTERS - Computer learning suites have been established in six areas of RCT to boost skills and improve job prospects - under RCT Council's successful grant application to the New Opportunities Fund. "Training needs analysis" will be offerred to each participant with the help of qualified ICT trainers. Two centres, with at least six computers, inkjet printers and scanners will be in the Rhondda at Treherbert and Tylorstown Libraries, offering a range of sessions based on individual needs.

PAYMENTS - Pensioners are urged to claim their winter fuel payments of £200 before March 31st. People of 60 or over who are resident in Britain during the week September 16-22 2002 are eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment. To claim, or for further information, phone 0845 9151 515.

  • MEETING - Members of the public are invited to attend the next South Wales Police Authority meeting on Monday 13th January at Police HQ in Bridgend. Formal business will be discussed from 10am and from 12 noon the public will be able to ask their questions. Phone 01656 869366.

JOYRIDERS - Police now have the power - under the Police Reform Act 2002 - to seize vehicles from nuisance drivers on the spot, if driven carelessly or inconsiderately on wasteland, playing fields and small streets. Car or motorbike owners will have to pay up to £375 to reclaim them, plus a £105 recovery charge and £12 for every day of storage.
