Help the Age's 10 point plan
Help the Aged has
unveiled a

into the streets. Simple amenities such as better
pavements, improved public toilets, more park benches and easier
transport links, can make a huge difference to whether or not older
people feel confident enough to leave their homes. Reducing
isolation by making our neighbourhoods age-friendly should be at the
heart of the planning process

New project targeted at prevention of mental health problems in
young people
Right Here is an ambitious new project from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and
the Mental Health Foundation. It’s a 5 year project to revolutionise
the prevention of mental health problems among people aged 16 – 25.
It will also tackle the stigma attached to mental illness that often
stops young people asking for help.
Right Here will invest
in partnerships between public and voluntary sector organisations
across the UK . These will pilot new ways of working to protect
young people’s mental health. Each pilot will aim to build
resilience in young people, their families and communities, and
promote positive mental health. If you would like further

Preventing smoking uptake in the young
Guidance from the
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(NICE) focuses on various measures to dissuade the young from
starting to smoke. The guidance looks at both what the mass media
(newspaper articles, commercial materials, leaflets etc) can do. It
also looks at what measures supermarkets, newsagents, and off-licences
can take - at point of sale - to prevent those under the age of 18
purchasing tobacco and cigarettes. The guidance is also aimed at
people involved in health in the NHS, in local authorities and the
community and voluntary sectors. It advises on how the issues can be
addressed

Campaign to help reduce the risk of large measles outbreak
The Chief Medical Officer for England has announced the
implementation of an
MMR immunisation catch up campaign for England . The campaign will urge PCTs and GPs to
identify individuals up to 18 years of age not up to date with their
MMR and offer catch-up immunisation to reduce the risk of a measles
epidemic. The latest modelling research carried out by the Health
Protection Agency, examining the potential for measles transmission
in England, suggests that there is now a real risk of a large
measles outbreak of between approximately 30,000 to 100,000 cases -
the majority in London

This is a
consultation
carried out by the Department of Health on the extension and
revision of the current system of making direct payments. This is in
respect of persons securing the provision of certain social care
services as governed by the 2003 Direct Payment regulations. The
changes being proposed are in two main areas; the extension of the
direct payment scheme to people who lack the capacity (within the
meaning of the Mental Capacity Act 2005) to consent to the receipt
of direct payments, and the removal of the exclusions which
currently apply to people who are subject to various provisions of
mental health legislation. The consultation closes on 12

Doing time: the experiences and needs of older people in prison
This
briefing
aims to give older people in prison a voice. The Prison
Reform Trust believe that to develop more effective ways of working
with older prisoners, an important first step is to hear directly
from them. Although noting a general improvement in prison
healthcare, the report finds older prisoners can face difficulties
in continuing their medication when imprisoned and routinely fail to
receive preventative and screening services

NHS neglects elderly depression
Age
Concern has found over 65s seeking help are often fobbed off,
misdiagnosed or given inappropriate treatment. Fewer than 10% of
older people with
clinical depression
are referred to specialist mental health services compared with
about 50% of younger adults with mental and emotional problems. In
some cases, GPs are unable to refer older people on to other parts
of the NHS that could help them because of discriminatory rules
excluding people over the age of 65. The charity has launched a new
campaign - Down, but not out - to improve the lives of older people
with depression

Councils not prepared for ageing population
A recent
report from the Audit Commission has
found that Councils are not prepared to meet the needs of their
ageing population. The commission used a "mystery shopper" exercise

services such as leisure and transport. It found that those facing
the biggest rises in the proportion of elderly residents were least
able to offer suitable services

Hospitals should tell police about knife wounds
Doctors should tell the police when a patient comes to hospital
with a
knife wound
that is likely to have been inflicted by someone else, says interim
guidance from the General Medical Council and the Department of
Health. Speedy reporting could prevent further harm, including a
further attack on the patient, staff, or others in the hospital, or
in the locality where the wound was originally inflicted. The
guidance, published earlier this month, comes amid a rise in the
number of violent attacks involving knives, particularly among young
people in London and other UK cities

Cocaine use in England and Wales rises as cannabis use falls
The latest figures
show that the
number of people using cocaine
in England and Wales rose last year, although fewer people used
cannabis. The data from the NHS Information Centre are set against
an overall decline in drug misuse over recent years. The figures
show that in 2006-7 2.6% of adults reported taking cocaine, an
estimated 835,000 people. This is an increase of 0.2% from the
previous year and a 2% rise since 1996. However, the use of cannabis
continues to fall. It reached a peak in 2002, when 10.9% of adults
reported taking it. Last year 8.2% of the population, an estimated
2.6 million people, reported taking cannabis, down from 8.7% the
previous year
