*  *  *  *  *  *

Douglas was born into a Christian family and was brought up in Blaengarw, a small mining village in the Welsh valleys.  He began working in the mines when he was 14 and also became a proficient footballer.

Becoming a Christian in his early twenties proved to be just the beginning of an adventure he could not have dreamed of. He became a local preacher in the Methodist Church and would set off on Sunday afternoons to walk the mountains down into the neighbouring valleys to preach at evening services.

It was in the early 60’s that he received a call to full time ministry and was stunned by this. So, at forty years of age, when most people were settled, Doug moved with his wife Lillian and their two children to the Salvation Army.

God moved rapidly opening doors of service firstly locally and then as his call was established he moved with his family to take up the command of a Salvation Army Corps in Aberystwyth.

Wales was to be the ground where his ministry was contained. It seemed wholly appropriate for him, as his grandfather had been converted in the Welsh Revival and his father also.

Corps in towns, cities and valley settings followed until his retirement from active command in 1987 from Pentre.

Wherever he went he endeared himself to the people of that community whether they were church or not, wearing his uniform with gentleness, he had an amazing gift for enabling people to feel special and loved.

He was truly a man of deep spirituality, and innovative thinking, a prayerful, Holy Spirit filled, guided and equipped man.

He moved in life from the pit to the pulpit and gave his whole life in glory to God.    Written by Rev. Ruth Goodland ( daughter)

MATTHEW PAUL THOMAS

07.08.79 - 29.06.2002

Following the tragic and sudden loss on 29th June 2002 of Matthew, aged 22, only loving son of Susan and stepson-to-be of Richard, a family service was held at Matthew’s home, 31 Troedyrhiw Terrace, Treorchy on 5th July, followed by services at St. Peter’s Church, Pentre and Treorchy Cemetery.

Father Haydn kindly officiated with immense care and compassion throughout. Dewi Reynolds and Sons carrying out all arrangements with great dignity.

Around 900 friends and relatives attended Matthew’s funeral at St. Peter’s Church, which was filled to over-capacity for the service, many lining the street outside.

Matthew Paul Thomas of Troedyrhiw Terrace, Treorchy.

Matthew, only loving and cherished son of Susan and Leighton,

loving brother of Deborah, brother-in-law-to-be of Scott,

and doting uncle to Sophie and to Cara,

proud grandson of Lilian and Elwyn, and of Sally and the late Danny,

stepson of Judith, and stepson-to-be of Richard.

Matthew was a pleasant boy, and a very caring person, who would want us all at this time, to also remember Richard, who was the driver of the car.

Matthew had a friendly look about him.

He was the sort of boy that people weren’t afraid to greet in passing,

and he gave a twinkling, shy smile to all who did.

Matthew ENJOYED his life, he EMBRACED life’s adventures,

and he LOVED his family, and his friends, BEYOND MEASURE.

Matthew loved to have a good time, but never at the expense of others.

He cared about the friends whose company he kept.

He cared about ALL those whose lives touched his own,

and Matthew cared, and LOVED, ALL THOSE he shared his precious life’s time with.

Matthew was an honest boy,

a quiet pupil in his young schooldays,

and he worked, in our midst, in Somerfield, for six years,

BUT HE LIVED for his Friday and Saturday nights out with his friends.

He was always happy, the life and soul of the party,

with a WICKED sense of humour.

And because of his outgoing and fun-loving personality,

Matthew could get away with things we couldn’t even BEGIN to think of, let alone do!

Matthew had BOUNDLESS energy,

he loved sport in general,  but especially MANCHESTER UNITED,

and was a REALLY good football player himself, but absolutely HATED the training !

Matthew was, by nature, A VERY LAID-BACK young man!

And SUCH a modern-day, “STYLISH” individual -

a “GRAND-MASTER” at mobile phone text messages,

and his HAIR clippers were VERY important to him !

AND HE LOVED MUSIC –

THE LOUDER, THE BETTER !

Because of all these things, and because there was SO MUCH MORE about him,

Matthew will be sadly missed,

by all his family and friends,

and by all who knew him.

And Matthew will ALWAYS be, REMEMBERED FONDLY,

BY ALL whose lives he TOUCHED.

JOHN JENKINS

John Jenkins of Stuart Street passed away at the age of 76 at Llwynypia Hospital on 2nd January 2002.  The cremation service was held on the 10th January, and was officiated by Rev. Cyril Llewellyn, assisted by Mr. Brownutt.

John had worked in the former EMI factory in Treorchy but eventually retired from the Royal Mint in Llantrisant.

He often enjoyed walking out in Treorchy with Iris - despite losing his sight in later years - and relished his copy of the “talking newspaper” tapes of the Rhondda Leader he received each week.

John lived in the family home in Stuart Street all his life, though some may recall him by his father who worked as a watch repairer next to Barclay’s Bank in Pentre, many years ago.

Iris would like to thank everyone for the many cards and words of kindness she has received since.

Sympathy is extended to Iris - his wife of 50 years – and to his son Stephen, daughter Janice, and their respective families.
