CANCER RESEARCH UK - On Thursday, January 22, the Treorchy and District Cancer Research Committee held a coffee evening at St. Matthews Church Hall. Although it was a very cold night, the hall was full to capacity.

The first part of the social evening is always enjoyable with cakes, coffee and chat. Then we had the privilege of welcoming our guest, research nurse, Barbara Moore. We were interested to learn that her invaluable work is funded by Cancer Research UK. There are only 12 such specialist nurses in the whole of Britain with just one working in the hospitals of Wales. Nurse Moore, whilst dealing with patients, researches the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

The information she gave us made us realise how important our contributions are to cancer research. Our secretary thanked Nurse Moore for giving us her valuable time to inform us of the important work with which she is involved.

Finally, we were very well entertained by the pupils of Treorchy Comprehensive School. It was so enjoyable to listen to the boys and girls singing well known and well loved songs. Thanks are due to their teachers, Helen May and Stuart Roberts. Our community is very proud of the outstanding musical tradition of the school and thank all concerned for sharing their music with us.

It is pleasing to inform you that the evening raised £660 for this very worthy cause and we wish to thank all who supported the coffee evening.

The next event will be a quiz in the RAFA at 7.30 pm on Monday, February 16. All are welcome.

YOUTH CENTRE - Treorchy Youth Centre re-opened on January 12, after their Christmas Break.

The club’s achievements last year included their Dance Group, when the Single and Doubles teams represented the Treorchy club in the local RCT dance competition, with the Doubles team going on to represent RCT in the Youth Event Wales national competition in Newtown Powys last April, coming second in the Junior event.

The Football team represented the Treorchy centre in the RCT football tournament, where they came second. They also undertook training with the help of sponsorship from Community Chest and got up-to-date training for the youth workers/coach for refereeing and also played friendly matches in Nantymoel Boys and Girls Club.

Laura Holmes represented the club at Youth Forum Meetings, which consists of a committee of young people having their say in the community and is arranged by the Youth Service.

A Talent Show was held in October, with Lorne Taylor taking first place. Then on November 3, other clubs in RCT Area 3 joined us with various acts taking to the stage. First place winner was break dancer Peter, singer Josh took second place and singer Lorne took third place. All three winners were from Treorchy Youth Centre and all three received £25 vouchers. What talent we have.

Treorchy Youth Centre took part in the RCT Area 3 Quiz held at Tylorstown Youth Centre. Treorchy won with 4 participants again receiving £25 vouchers.

We worked an allotment in Treorchy, growing potatoes, runner beans, broad beans and tomatoes and gave the produce to Ystradfechan Home for the Elderly, where we also planted the summer flowers in plant pots and will soon do the spring plating.

Members also sang carols at the Home, where the residents and staff really enjoyed the singing.

We undertook trips to Oakwood, visited various youth centres and enjoyed the Chocs Away Day in Pontypool, where we did make our own Belgium chocolates and sampled the delicious fruits and the chocolate fountain, with chocolate all over our faces!

African Drums proved to be very popular. The members engaged in making music and even made a CD - so look out ‘Britain’s Got Talent’! We also held a Design a Christmas Carol competition, with Jose winning an MP3 player.

These are just some of the things that we have done since January last year.

Congratulations to all who received their Certificates for Record of Achievement, OCN, Mayor Award and Duke of Edinburgh Award, Pentathlon and to the 4 members who undertook a project on cultural diversity. Well Done.

Thanks you to all the staff for the work they have done with members this last year and for supporting events that have taken place out of hours and over weekends and thank you for the work you do for the community.

With Pool, Darts, Basketball, Football, Crafts, Dance, Bilingual Quiz, Weightlifting, Gardening and Issue Base Work all taking place on various nights at the club, why not come and join us from 6.30.to 9pm, entrance is just 50p.

For further information, contact Senior Youth Worker Jennifer Terry on 01443 776669.
