DECEMBER 2005

SAFETY COMES FIRST - The 'Hinge Pins Stage Crew' were recently thrilled to be awarded a Co-op Community Dividend Grant.  The funding will enable them to purchase much needed safety equipment including Fluorescent waistcoats, jackets and First Aid equipment.

The Hinge Pins provide volunteer backstage crew for many of the local amateur dramatic societies and heard about the award whilst crewing for “Half a Sixpence” staged by the Mid-Rhondda Theatre Group in October.

The Hinge Pins provide the crew for most of the local amateur societies who put on shows in the Parc and Dare Theatre - crewing for  Les Miserables, a version of the long running blockbuster musical being put on by the Spotlight Youth Theatre Group during half term week  (October 25th - October 29th) as well as Selsig's "Summer Holiday" currently on this week in early December and soon the Rhondda Theatre Group's Pantomime in January.

The Co-op presentation was made by Mrs Sylvia Jones, local area committee member of the Co-operative Group and the funding is much appreciated by this voluntary group.

The Hinge Pins are always keen to recruit new members to help keep amateur dramatics alive in the Rhondda.  No experience is necessary, and the group welcome members of all ages and abilities.  If you are interested in working backstage, please phone Phil Harris on 01443 436731.

  • WALES DEBUT - Lewis Price of Ipswich Town FC made his Wales debut in goals, in the friendly against Cyprus in Limassol on Wednesday, 16th November. In an appalling performance for a Welsh team humiliated by a team 30 places below them in the World rankings, Lewis was the only success.
  • The youngster made a string of brilliant saves, to keep the score down to 1-0.  He can now look forward to establishing himself as the Welsh No. 1, and could well be considered as being the only player who will have guaranteed his place in the next Wales line up.
  • Lewis has established himself as the regular No.1 at Portman Road, and with the injury to Danny Coyne (while playing for Burnley FC) young Price is favourite to claim the international jersey. Lewis was born in Bournemouth, but he qualifies to play for Wales via Welsh grand-parents who hail from the Rhondda.

  • CANCER SERVICES - The Community Cancer Services (CCS) at Tonypandy has a busy close to 2005. The celebrated charity concern that serves the Rhondda and Taff Ely has organised on a day trip to Bath to visit The Roman Baths and the Victorian themed Christmas Market. This trio has been organised as thank you to those folk who have supported the enterprise over its celebrated lifespan.
  • Meanwhile, CCS at 8 Dunraven Street, Tonypandy (near Hilda's Florist) holds a Christmas Fayre/Open Day on Friday, December 16 2005. There will be tea, coffee, mince pies, mulled wine and Christmas crafts on sale, as well as a Bran-tub and Raffle.
  • There will also be Complementary Therapists on hand to offer free "Taster" Treatments to clients who wish to attend and seek further advice on the range of free therapies and relaxation techniques available at the outlet.

CCS has had a remarkable response from those unfortunate folk who have had to deal with the trauma of cancer, and in return the public backing has endorsed the importance of this notable facility in the community.
