DECEMBER 2004 - JANUARY 2005

  • CYLCH MEITHRIN - The bi-lingual playgroup held at the Adult Education and Youth Centre in Horeb Street will re-open from Monday, 24th January. The playgroup will initially be open on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 10am until 12 noon, costing £2.50 per session. These will be temporary opening hours until the group is more established and able to offer longer sessions.

    ‘Ty a Fi’ will also be held on Monday and Wednesdays from 10am until 12 noon for mothers and toddlers to attend, costing £2 per session. Contact Leanne on 772217 or 07815 103455 for further details.

PERFECT START - This year’s Upper Rhondda Pool League kicked off in good style for the Stag when they hosted the Hendrewen, recording a 9-0  victory. Singles wins for Matthew Cook, Matthew Romans, Jamie Evans, Kevin Moon, Steve Hamer and Will Coleman made it 6-0 before new signings Ceri Hobbs and Jamie Cook contributed to make it 8-0 with Coleman and Hamer winning the last frame to give the Stag a perfect start to the season.

  • LUCKY NUMBER - The lucky number for the Christmas 2004 Newsletter which promotes our community website at www.treorchy.net has now been drawn. The winning number is 2225 and any claim must be made to news@treorchy.net no later than Tuesday 1st February 2005. Each of the 4,000 newsletters distributed locally was stamped with an individual number on the front page and the winning copy must be produced in order to verify any claim. The prize is a rollover from the last issue and now stands at £40 worth of shopping vouchers, kindly provided by the Treorchy and District Chamber of Trade. Many thanks to Geraint Owen of the Stag Café for drawing the lucky number, and also thanks to Mrs C Devinett of Pentre for independently witnessing the draw.

SUCESSIVE VICTORIES - The Stag Hotel Sunday Night Darts Team recorded back to back victories when they defeated Tynewydd Labour ‘B’ 5-2 and the Railway Canteen 4-3. These results put the Stag well clear of the relegation zone and makes it seven victories out of their last eight. Against the Labour, Ceri Hobbs and Lee Trythall were prominent whilst Handel Rich was the Stag’s best player against the Canteen.

  • GOOD RESULT - Congratulations to Treorchy Boys and Girls Club’s Senior Football Team, who travelled to play Ynyshir BGC and came away with a cracking 7-0 victory. This result keeps them in good contention at the top of the Rhondda and District Premiere Football League.  

VISITING - A recent visitor to the home of his parents in Ynyswen was Pastor Andrew Jenkins. His mother Rita has sadly been incapacitated in recent years and is cared for at home by her husband Tom. 

 

Andrew, as he prefers to be known, is an ordained Minister of the Apostolic Church within the UK and he is also a board member of their missionary enterprises ‘Action Overseas’.

 

In recent years he has visited Latvia several times, where he had special responsibilities, and in May last year his father Tom accompanied him there on a ten day visit - thanks to the kindness of Ysbyty George Thomas who were able to accommodate Rita while he was away.

 

Andrew will be leaving for India and Sri-Lanka in January on Church business and later in 2005 he will be visiting South Africa and the Republic of the Congo.

Last August, Andrew was one of the speakers at the Annual International Convention of the Apostolic Church, which was held at Swansea University.

Also travelling abroad last year was Andrew’s brother Rueben, who along with his wife Marilyn, visited Kenya in August as part of a team of Church members of the Porth Christian Centre which was led by Pastor John Bullock.

  • STARSEARCH WINNER - The winner and star search champion 2004 receiving a cheque for £750 at Pentre Legion Club was Daniel Cadogan  - pictured below on the left. (More details of Pentre Legion's Star Search will be appearing on our web site later this month...)

RHONDDA CAMEO SOCIETY - Rhondda Cameo Society held their Christmas Dinner at Ton Pentre Football Club where a pleasant evening was enhanced by entertainment provided by the Harmony Singers.

On Wednesday 8th December, members and visitors enjoyed a Carol Concert by Ton Pentre Junior School Choir led by Neil Topping.

A vote of thanks was given by Megan Morris and followed by tea and mince pies.

Tribute was paid to former Cameo member Mrs Lilian Couch who together with her husband Rev. James Couch recently passed away. The meeting stood in silent respect.

In the New Year we will meet on Wednesday 26th January at 2.15pm when the speaker will be Belinda Harvey, on the subject of ‘Healing’.

  • WHITEWASHED - The Stag Hotel Sunday Night Darts Team suffered their worst result of the season so far, going down 7-0 to high-flyers Pentre Legion ‘A’. The Stag had chances to take the first two legs but failed, and it was downhill from then onwards as the Legion upped their game, in particular Lee Hughes, to whitewash their opponents. The Stag will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to Tynewydd Labour ‘B’ for their next game.    

94TH BIRTHDAY - Mrs Doris May Morgans of Bute Street recently celebrated her 94th birthday amongst family and friends. Her son David and his wife travelled from Solihull for the family occasion and also in attendance were her daughter Rita and husband Tom who live in Ynyswen.

Several close friends called to congratulate her, along with many telephone messages and cards being received and she was also pleased to see her very close friends Rob and Dwynwen from Porthcawl.

Doris is quite a character and has a remarkable memory, being an excellent reciter with an exhaustive repertoire of poems and Scriptures.In her younger days she was a first-class pastry cook and also excelled in her variety of cakes.

She was married to the late Richard Morgans (Sol) for 70 years and has two children, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren and is proud to be the oldest member in the Treorchy Christian Centre (Gosen) where her Pastor is Pastor Mal Holland. 

  • ENTERTAINMENT -  Treorchy Con Club hosts ‘Gary's video/ audio and general knowledge Quiz’ in the lounge, with free admission, on Wednesday Dec 29. All welcome. On New Years Eve at the club there will be Mathews disco/ karaoke, Paul David comedian, local artists, bingo, raffles and all the usual party fun.  Doors open 7.30 and tickets are on sale at the club. All non-members are most welcome to join in the fun.

XMAS TOURNAMENT WINNER - Steve John was the Xmas Pool Tournament Winner in the annual event staged at the Lion Hotel, beating Rhys Davis in the final.

  • GOOD RUN CONTINUES - The Stag Hotel Sunday Night Darts team continues their recent good run with a 6-1 win at nearby Treorchy RAFA Club, with landlady Anne Rich the star of the evening which included a maximum 180. The hosts took the opening leg with Tony Jones checking out, which was equalled when Kevin Moon won the next leg to make it 1-1. Lee Trythall went out to make it 2-1 to the Stag, which was then extended to 3-1 after the first doubles where Rich hit her 180 partnered by Stephen Griffiths. Another two doubles victories made it 5-1 and the night was rounded off when Ceri Hobbs won his singles to give the visitors an excellent 6-1 result.

ST MATTHEWS - Christmas Services at St Matthew’s includes Holy Eucharist at 10pm on Christmas Eve, Friday 24th December, followed by Holy Eucharist on Christmas Day at 9.15am. On Sunday 26th December, Holy Eucharist will be at 9am, but please note that there will be no evening service that day. The Clergy and Churchwardens look forward to worshipping with you and wish everyone a Joyful Christmas and a Happy New Year.   • TRAFFIC CALMING - Plans showing proposals to introduce traffic calming measures in Prospect Place, Dumfries Street and adjoining streets are on display at the Church of the Imaculate Conception, Glyncoli Road from 13th of this month until Thursday 30th December. The plans can be inspected by the public between the hours of 8am and 6pm. RCT County Borough Council’s proposals include the provision of road humps, gateway features, extension of the one-way system at Gethin Road and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit, in order to facilitate a safer environment for pedestrians and drivers in the vicinity of the school and surrounding areas. Any comments on the proposals should be sent by 30th December to Atkins Highways and Transportation, Longcross Court, 47 Newport Road, Cardiff CF24 0AD and marked for the attention of Miss N Ley. 

CHAMPION - Gareth Rosser from Brook Street has won the Upper Rhondda Pool League Singles Overall Championship, after winning the title 2-1 in a final played at the Miskin in Trealaw. Rosser, who plays pool for the Red Cow, defeated Lyndon Elliott (Pig and Whistle) to become Champion in his first season of entering the competition. 

  • YNYSWEN OAP - Members of the Ynyswen OAP Club enjoyed a shopping trip to Swansea on 23rd November and are now looking forward to their Christmas Dinner on the 16th December. Members of this pensioners’ group meet every Thursday afternoon at Ynyswen Welfare Hall from 2pm to 4pm. This is a warm and friendly club where everyone is so welcome - so why not come along and join us? 

TABLETOP SALE -The Pentre and Ton Pentre Branch of Plaid Cymru The Party of Wales holds a tabletop sale at Ton Pentre Football Club on Saturday 4th December from 2pm. Tables cost £3. Contact Maureen Weaver on 434558 to reserve a table.

  • SANTA’S SUITCASE - Travelcare in Treorchy hold their ‘Santa’s Suitcase’ appeal this year in conjunction with Ty Hafan Children’s Hospice’s new Charity Shop which has opened at 83 Bute St, Treorchy. Local businesses as well as members of the public are asked to donate a Christmas present for children in need. Gifts may be left in Santa’s Suitcase at Travelcare, 209 High St Treorchy until Dec 10th

DELEGATES CHAMPION - Johnny Rees of Treorchy Con is the new Delegates Champion of the Upper Rhondda Pool League, after defeating James Harris 2-0 in a final played at Ton Pentre Football Club. Johnny played some outstanding pool throughout, culminating in two eight ball breaks.  

  • EMPHATIC WIN - The Stag Hotel Sunday Night Darts Team travelled to Ton AFC and came away with an emphatic 7-0 victory. Lee Trythall finished in two legs with Anne Rich getting the other one to give them a 3-0 lead after the team game, and with further ‘outs’ by Ceri Hobbs and Kevin Moon it was 6-0 after the doubles. In the singles, old stalwart Handel Rich defeated Gill Edwards, to give the Stag a 7-0 whitewash. 

ST MATTHEWS - Advent and Christmas Services at St Matthew’s this year includes the Treorchy Women’s Institute’s Carol Service, which will be held on Thursday 9th December at 7pm. St Matthew’s Church also holds a Christmas Coffee Morning on Saturday 11th December from 10am to 12 noon, and also a Family Service on Sunday 12th December at 9.45am with Holy Eucharist at 6pm. All are welcome to attend.

  • ENTERTAINMENT  - Ystradfechan Bowls Club will be the venue for an evening of entertainment on Saturday, December 11th, starting at 8pm. Entry is £3.

RESPECTABLE FINISH - The Stag’s Tuesday Night Ladies Darts Team has ended the season in a respectable third position. The girls have had their best season yet, and hopefully will be able to improve upon this season’s good effort when the league re-starts in January next year. 

  • XMAS TOURNAMENTS - The Treorchy Hotel and Lion pubs will hold Xmas Pool Tournaments on Saturday 4th December and Sunday 19th December. For further information, contact 772028 (Hotel) and 772123 (Lion).  

POOL - The Lion ‘A’ pairing of Nicky John and Chris Elliott has won the Upper Rhondda Pool League Division One Doubles Competition at the expense of David Ballint and Richard Silcox of Treorchy Con. The Lion ‘A’ boys ran out 2-0 winners and will now meet John Mason and Rhydian Oliver of the Royal Oak ‘B’ in the Champion of Champions play-off in December. 

  • MEMORABLE NIGHT - Eighteen year-old Ceri Hobbs had a night to remember when he played for the Stag Sunday Night Darts Team at the Tremains. Hobbs, in his first season at the pub, started two legs, finished two legs, hit a maximum 180 and won his singles game to crown a memorable night despite his team going down 4-3.

UP AND RUNNING - The Pencelli Hotel is up and running again with new licensees Richard and Christine Gillard. The pub caters for food, which includes a daily and Xmas menu, as well as a fine selection of beers. Best wishes to Richard and Christine for their new venture.  

  • BEST PERFORMANCE - The Stag Hotel Monday Night Darts Team put in their best performance this season when running out 6-1 winners, against Ton Con. The Stag led 2-1 after the team game, with Dean Lewis and Handel Rich hitting shots out, and it was quickly 4-1 after two triples victories. The first singles was between Alan Bowen for the Stag and John Phillips for the Con, with Bowen taking the leg after some excellent darts. The second singles saw two stalwarts of the game, Handel Rich and Paul Pumford, go head to head, which Rich won to make the final score 6-1 in favour of the Stag. Prominent for the Stag were Bowen, Rich and Dean Lewis.

SCOUT POST - Once again the Rhondda Scouts are operating the Scout Christmas Post Service, whereby they are delivering Christmas cards to anywhere in the Rhondda Valleys for only 10p per card. The last posting date for the Scout Post is Saturday 4th December at midday. Stamps and posting boxes are available from the following outlets – Cwmparc Welfare Hall and Glyn’s Newsagents of Cwmparc, and also in Simpson’s Newsagents, opposite the Post Office in Treorchy. Please note that you must post your cards in the special boxes at participating outlets and not in the Royal Mail post boxes.

  • CHAMPIONS - The Lion ‘A’ Pool Team were crowned Champion of Champions when they defeated the Gelligaled 5-0 in a match played at Ystrad Labour. Winners were Chris Elliott, David Holvey, Steve John, Nicky John and Paul Jenkins , while sixth player Robert Wisley was not needed as the game was already won.

CHRISTMAS FETE - Treorchy Conservative Club holds a Christmas Fete at the club on Saturday 11th December from 1pm - with an auction also taking place around 3pm.
