PUBLIC MEETING - Rhondda AM Leighton Andrews holds a public meeting - to discuss the new Llwynypia Hospital - at the Rhondda campus of Coleg Morgannwg (the old Rhondda College) at 7pm on Tuesday 2nd September. Mr Andrews will chair the meeting, with speakers attending from Pontypridd & Rhondda Hospital Trust and RCT Local Health Board.

  • SPORTS - Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has hailed its first ‘Health for All’ day a big success after nearly 100 adults with learning disabilities took part in a day-long programme of sports activities. 

     Activities on the day included Boccia (a game similar to french boule and lawn bowls), Polybat (an adapted version of Table Tennis), New Age Kurling (all the action of the Winter Olympic Sport but with the added bonus that it can be played on any flat surface), indoor golf and yoga.  

    The event, held in Michael Sobells Sports Centre, Aberdare, was the culmination of an ongoing partnership between the Authority’s Sports Development Unit and Rhondda Cynon Taf’s Day Centres.

COWBOY CABS - Magistrates have fined two unlicensed private hire car operators a total of £2800 with total costs of £500 following a major ‘sting’ investigation set up by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.  Rhondda Magistrates Court were told that a series of complaints were received by the Council’s licensing officers from the licensed trade, elected members and traffic police, of unlicensed vehicles and drivers operating in the Pentre area. 

Alan Clive Vaughan, formerly of William Street, Pentre, was ordered to pay fines totalling £2100 and £300 in costs after pleading guilty to operating an unlicensed private hire vehicle business, being an unlicensed driver and driving an unlicensed private hire vehicle.  

Adrian Alan Ward, of Dan Y Coed, Pentre, was ordered to pay fines of £700 with £200 costs after pleading guilty to driving unlicensed private hire vehicles. 

The investigation formed part of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s ‘Cowboy Cab’ campaign and was the culmination of a joint investigation between the Council, South Wales Police and Rhondda Cynon Taf Taxi Association.   

  • WARNING - Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is warning residents that some food products being sold in the UK have been found to contain chilli powder illegally contaminated with the dye ‘Sudan 1’. full details in "Press Releases" - see under "RCT County Borough Council" 

OAP MEETING - A meeting of the National Association of OAP’s of Wales will be held on Tuesday, 12th August at the Ystrad Rhondda Pensioners Hall (near the Star Hotel) in Ystrad. The meeting will begin at 10.30am and everyone over the age of 55 is welcome to attend.

  • SOCCER CAMP - A soccer summer camp will be held at Porth County Comprehensive School on August 11 &  12 for 5 - 7 year olds and on August 13 & 14 for those aged 8 to 11 yrs. The soccer camp costs £20 for the full two-day course and runs from 9.30am to 3.15pm each day. Contact Simon Llewellyn on 01443 732465 for details.

SEARCH - A worldwide search for former members of Treorchy Comprehensive School Band is currently underway!

Debbie Hosking, the Musical Director of Treorchy School Band is anxious to contact as many former school band members as possible to celebrate the band’s 50th Anniversary at the Parc and Dare Theatre, Treorchy on Saturday, 20th September at 7pm.

The event, featuring the current Treorchy Comprehensive School Band, a Massed Band, Treorchy School Choir and vocalists is already creating public interest - especially as Michael Aspel will be appearing as the comperé.

Mr Aspel is the well-known television celebrity whose varied career ranges from the children’s show Crackerjack, to coverage of the Miss World competitions and for also hosting The Antiques Roadshow and presenting This Is Your Life.

Whilst many former members have been contacted and will enthusiastically support this unique event in the history of the school band, Ms Hosking still has a list of names with no current contact address or telephone number.

  • CREDIT UNION - Rhondda Community Credit Union is pleased to announce the opening of its new office at 107 Bute Street, Treorchy. A warm welcome is offered to members and the general public to attend one of their special open days on Thursday 31st July between 2 and 5pm, or on Friday 1st August between 11am and 2pm.

    The Credit Union is currently recruiting volunteers to help run the Collection Point at the Treorchy office, so if you, a friend, relative or neighbour have a few hours to spare each week and would like to help others in our local community, please call in and have a chat.

    No experience is necessary as full training is provided. Credit Unions offer savings and low-cost loan facilities convenient to member’s homes and workplaces and free life insurance is provided on all savings and loans.

LINK - Former Treorchy man, Rhobert ap Steffan, the son of the late Rev. and Mrs Hinton of Luton St - and the driving force behind the Llewellyn ap Gryfudd memorial statue at Landovery * see archived news, October 2002 - is currently spearheading a remarkable link between Wales and France.

On Friday 15th August, at Mortagne in France, a monument to the famous Welsh hero Owain Lawgogh is to be unveiled by a senior member of the National Assembly for Wales and a joint cultural festival will be held over the weekend to coincide with the ceremony.

The people of Montagne will provide free accommodation to any volunteers from Wales who attend and take an active part as performers or helpers, and a coach has been organised.

The weekend will include many events including craftwork exhibitions, various aspects of Welsh culture and commerce, a grand French market of local produce, folk music and dance, public dances in the streets and around the port, and a grand fireworks display at the end of the festival.
