  • SHOW - Rhondda Cynon Taff's annual horticultural show will be held on Sunday, 2nd September, at the Rhondda Fach Sports Centre in Tylorstown. Almost £3,000 will be awarded in prizes at this year's event. Local gardeners and growers are invited to contact Debbie Jones on 01443-665451 for an entry pack. 

RECOVERED - Local police officers discovered thousands of pounds worth of stolen items during a raid on a house in High Street, Treorchy. Some of  the items recovered are mountain bikes, garden swings and slides, tools, cameras, electrical equipment, lights and a samurai sword in a black case. Burglary victims should contact officers on 01443-743609. 

  • VOLUNTEERS - Workers at the Lewis Merthyr Day Unit at the Ysbyty George Thomas Hospital in Treorchy, are inviting local soloists or pianists to give an hour to entertain the elderly clients. Contact Claire or Rachel on 01443-440440, extension 5183.

JOB LOSSES - The 20 year-old Hitachi television making plant at Hirwaun is set to close before Christmas. 300 jobs were shed there a year ago and the current workforce stands at 174. 

  • COMPLAINT - Treorchy's Pengelli Bowling Club members have complained that the ceiling of their RCT council owned toilet facilities has not been repaired properly since June 2000.

THEFT - Sanding tools, a drill and credit cards, were stolen from a house in Kenry Street, Ynyswen while the occupants were asleep. A blue Ford Escort car was also taken from the property.

  • GARDENS - Rhondda Cynon Taff in Bloom competition - for a front garden display  that makes a contribution to the community environment - was won by Mr. M. Gregory of Ynyswen Road, Treorchy. Runner-up was Mrs. Gordon Scott of Kenry Street, Ynyswen.

  • ACTIVITIES - The next storytelling and craft session - organised for youngsters during the school holidays - will be held at Treorchy Library on Tuesday, August 21st from 2.30pm.

CHAMPIONS - Treorchy Comprehensive School have won the Homework Club Challenge Quiz at the Rhondda Heritage Park Hotel, hosted by quizmaster Nigel Walker, ex-Welsh rugby international. Other schools competing were from Porth, Ferndale, Ysgol Gyfun y Cymmer, Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, Aberdare and Taff Ely.

  • DAY TRIP - Rhondda and Cynon Valley Railway Society have arranged a family day out to Windsor and Legoland on Sunday, August 19th. Coach fares are £10 adults and £8 per child. For further details contact Marianne Lewis on 01443-773197 during evenings and weekends. 

LITIGATION - 140 people living near Nantgwyddon landfill site are to sue the previous tip operators for allegedly damaging their health and ruining their quality of life. Anyone wishing to bring a claim against 3C's Waste Company, should contact solicitors Neil Stockdale or Gwen Evans of Hugh James Ford Simey on 01685 - 371122. All claims must be registered before 17th December 2001.

  • CHOIR - Treherbert Ladies Choir will resume rehearsals on Tuesday 4th September at the Treherbert Community Centre. New members are welcome.

SKY PATROL - Railtrack have deployed a helicopter to monitor trespass spots on the valleys and mainline tracks. South Wales is considered to be amongst the worst areas in Britain for trespass and vandalism on its railway network.

  • REWARD - Vandals jammed railway points with stones at Ystrad Rhondda in late July, causing a projected three weeks of disruption to the service over the holiday period. A £1000 reward is available from Railtrack - for any information that leads to a prosecution of the offenders.

AUTHOR - Sean James Cameron is currently researching a book - to be entitled “Rhondda Voices” - about tales of everyday life and extraordinary events in the valleys. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact him on 0771 9233 353.

  •  MAGISTRATES - A recruitment drive for potential new magistrates is underway throughout Rhondda Cynon Taff. Applications from ethnic minority groups or Welsh speakers are especially welcome. SUMMER SCHOOL - A record 500 students have signed up for this year’s summer school at the University of Glamorgan in Treforest.   •  EXHIBITION - Rhondda Heritage Park is planning an exhibition about the former Lewis Merthyr, Hafod, Coed Cae, Great Western and Ty Mawr collieries. Anyone wishing to submit photos, images or news cuttings should contact 01443 682 036.

DIRECTORY - An A to Z directory has been launched which lists everything in South Wales for pregnant women, babies and children. Entitled “The Local Baby Directory: South Wales”, copies cost £4.99 at bookstores or contact 01633 411 255 directly.

  • AWARD - The first UK top quality assurance award from the Eastman Dental Institute London for standards, staff training and management - has been given to the dental practice of Griffiths, Jones and Associates of Tonypandy. The award is recognised by the Department of Health.
