AUGUST - SEPTEMBER 2010

CANCER RESEARCH - On Monday, September 13, the Treorchy Cancer Research Committee held a very enjoyable and successful quiz in the RAFA club.

We would like to thank the quizmaster, Noel Henry for his generous support, and the landlord of the RAFA, Mr Phil Hanney, for free use of the premises.

£220 was raised, all of which will be sent to the Cancer Research UK Breast Cancer Appeal.

The next event organised by the Committee will be a Coffee Evening, on November 25, when the guest speaker will be Radio Wales personality, Roy Noble.

WELSH SOCIETY - The 45th season of Cymdeithas Gymraeg Treorci (Treorchy Welsh Society) opens on Thursday, September 30, when the guest speaker will be eminent Welsh historian, Dr John Davies who will be speaking about his award winning Book of the Year 'Cymru - Y 100 Lle i'w gweld cyn marw' (Wales - the 100 places to see before you die.)

The lecture begins at 7.15pm and will be held in Hermon Vestry, Regent St .

TRIPLES CHAMPIONS - Congratulations to Ystradfechan Bowling Club members David Summers, Chris Price and Mark Andrew Thomas who won the Welsh Triples Bowling Championship held at Llandrindod Wells on August 19.

The Welsh national title holders will now go on to compete against winning teams from England, Scotland, Ireland and the Channel Isles at the British Bowling contest which is due to be held Edinburgh in June 2011.

  • HISTORY - A 15-week course on the History of Treorchy and Rhondda will be commencing on Monday, September 20, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm at Treorchy Continuing Education Centre, Horeb Street , Treorchy.
  • The 15-week course will cover the Cwmparc bombings WW2, South Wales and industrial change, Parc and Dare theatre, Treorchy Male Voice Choir, Miners strikes, Population changes, Living and working conditions, The town of Treorchy, Sites of historical interest, Photographic workshop, Treorchy library.

DIABETES PEER SUPPORT - The Diabetes Self-Management Programme is open to everyone with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes and their families.

The sessions run for 2 hours over 2 weeks and are led by people who have Diabetes themselves.

The group is very informal and you will be able to ask questions and share your experiences of living with Diabetes.

The Programme will provide you with non medical advice and the latest information on Diabetes and Diabetes Services.

The trained volunteer tutors will provide you with the following information - What is Diabetes, Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Blood Glucose Monitoring, All Wales Retinopathy Screening Service, Healthy Eating/Cooking, Eating on a Budget, Disposal of Sharps, What you can do to help look after your diabetes, Annual Review, Keeping Active, Low Blood Sugars, Stress and Diabetes, Looking after your feet, Insurance/Travel, Reducing the risk of complications, How to get the most out of your appointment, Information on Diabetes Services, Sources of Diabetes Information and Support.

This course is free and you will be given a free information pack. All meetings are held at CwmNi, 156 Bute Street , Treherbert.

  • The next Diabetes Peer Support Group Meeting is on Wednesday, September 15 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

  • The next Diabetes Self-Management Course (2 day course) will be on Mondays, October 4 and October 11 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm and on Wednesdays, November 17 and November 24 from 1.30 pm to 3.30pm.

  • PROVIDENCE CHAPEL - Sunday School will restart on Sunday, September 12, at 2.30pm at Providence Chapel, Ynyswen (at the top of Woodland Terrace).
  • The Quiz Evenings will begin on Thursday, September 16, at 7pm.

NEW ASPERGER GROUP - There is a new Social Group for adults with Asperger Syndrome where you can meet others with similar life experience and be part of a social group to do things with people who understand you.

If you are 18 years of age or over, why not come along to our first meeting, to find out more about the group and what it can offer you at Room 3, YMCA Buildings, Taff Street, Pontypridd CF37 4TS on Thursday, September 9 at 7.00pm.

  • PACT MEETING - The next Police and Communities Together (PACT) monthly meeting for the Treorchy and Cwmparc areas will be held at Ty Bethania, Herbert Street , Treorchy on Tuesday, September 7 at 6pm.
  • All welcome to attend this meeting. There is on street parking. We have councillors, housing officers, local business members, youth workers plus other agencies attending the meeting.
  • Last month’s priorities have been addressing earlier reports of under age drinking and alcohol related youth annoyance at Cae Mawr Industrial Estate and Ystradfechan Playing Fields and continuing road safety issues along Pentwyn Road .

MEMORIAL DAY - A memorial day will be held at Alison House, Cwmparc, on Saturday, August 21, from 2pm until 5pm and at Cwmparc Legion from 7pm till late.

The day is in memory of Emily Bloodworth, who would have been 16 in July, and all proceeds will be in aid of the Alison House Youth Play Project.

  • MALE VOICE CHOIR - Cor Meibion Cwm Rhondda welcomes new members to join their ranks.
  • The male voice choir rehearses each week on Wednesday nights at Ton Pentre Junior School, from 7.30pm to 9pm, and perform one concert a month on average.

LISTENING FRIENDS - Rhondda Listening Friends meet at St John’s Church Hall, Ton Pentre, every Monday from 11am until 3.30pm.

We are a self-help group of people who understand what it’s like to have depression. Anything discussed will be in confidence. You can join the group at any time during the opening hours and stay for as long as it suits you. Tea and coffee will be available.

If you are depressed, lonely, or just need someone to talk to, then why not drop in to see us.

  • WRITING CLASS - Ron’s writing class will start in Ynyswen Welfare Hall on Tuesday, August 3, from 10am to 11.30am.
  • Ron Watkins, who has had 35 novels published, will cover prose and poetry.
  • There will be no charge except for payment of use of the hall.
  • Anyone aged 18 and over who is interested in writing will be welcome.
