  • TREORCHY SCOUT GROUP - Although just a short while ago Treorchy Scout Group was one of the strongest in the Rhondda, this group will have to close at the end of April unless some new adults can be found to run it. This will mean there will be no Beavers, Cubs or Scouts from Pentre to the top of the valley.

  • For over a year, Marianne Jenkins (Akela) has been running Beavers and Cub Scouts together as all the other leaders who used to run the group had to finish -either because of ill health or a change of job. Marianne has also had a new job and is now unable to run the Cub Pack.

  • Please don’t let this group close. If someone can be found to take over she is more than willing to come along to help, because she really enjoys her work with the youngsters. If you would like your son to join Beavers, six and seven year olds, or Cubs, eight to eleven year olds, and you would be prepared to come along to run, or help to run the section please contact District Commissioner, Dave John on 437437.

  • Previous experience in the Scouting movement is not necessary and training will be provided locally. However it would be nice to hear from ex members of the Group who have fond memories of their time in Beavers Cubs and Scouts and want to put something back into their Group.

  • You might have retired recently and want a new challenge. Have you thought about giving up some of your spare some time each week to help young people? To find out more about local Scouting and what it entails please ring Dave John on 437437.

RHONDDA VOICES  - The new book "Rhondda Voices" from Welsh author, Sean James Cameron will be available from book stores this summer. This enthralling collection of memories records life in the Rhondda Valley from the late nineteenth century onwards. Drawn from a wide variety of sources, it includes the often humorous anecdotes of everyday life from local people, notes from the diary of a surveyor prospecting for coal and extracts from a log book from the National School. All combine to create a unique picture of how life used to be...

  • "We all rushed to the Church Hall and waited with baited breath to see exactly what ‘evacuees’ were and to our disappointment we saw not some exotic animals but just a bunch of very tired and bedraggled children some already in tears and others looking as if the tears were not far away."
  • "Treorchy Fair... my brothers were walking from Blaencwm down to the fair - thrupence each. They got as far as Ynysfeio Bridge in Penyrenglyn and the youngest of the two swallowed his thrupenny bit. They came home crying, so the fair was put off that time."
  • "National School, December 1873. Claudia Lloyd persistently refused to come out of the desks when requested, for which she was lifted out and punished."

Accompanied by over 200 old photographs, experiences are recalled vividly; from work in the mines to celebrations and life in the valley during wartime. A chance to reminisce for many, this valuable record of local history will offer newcomers an opportunity to understand how modern Rhondda has been shaped. “Rhondda Voices” is published by Tempus Publishing Ltd. ISBN 0-7524-2625-7.
