CAMEO SOCIETY - Rhondda Cameo Society’s Spring Tea was held at Ton Pentre Football Club. The guest speaker was Mr Tom Phelps who entertained with anecdotes and humorous poems.

He was keen to point out that each of us has an interesting and unique life story, which we should pass on to family and friends by making written and recorded memoirs. This could also be very useful to historians of the future.

Mr Phelps was thanked by Megan Morris on behalf of the meeting. In April there will be a trip to Carmarthen and a visit to the National Wool Museum near Llansdysul, with its mill, exhibition centre, craft shop and café.

Cwmparc couple organise geocaching event

Following the success of the 1st South Wales Geocaching event held at Parc Cwm Darran near Bargoed last April - the second of what is hoped will become a yearly event is to be held at Dare Valley Country Park, Aberdare on Saturday, May 5, 2007.

Geocaching - pronounced geo-cashing - is the new high-technology adventure game that is enjoyed by thousands of people of all ages from most countries around the globe.

The only equipment needed is a GPS receiver that can be bought for less than £100, a love of the outdoors, and a sense of adventure.

The game is played with individuals setting up ‘caches’ and sharing the locations of these caches on the Internet. GPS users then use the location coordinates to find the caches.

Hides themselves can take many forms but in the majority of cases the end result will be a find  that will consist of a log book to log your find, and to make any comments about your adventure and often trinkets that are mostly of little value that you can swap for items of your own.

You will also in many cases come across a ‘hitch-hiker’ that takes the form of a travel bug or geocoin. These items often have a specific mission that you can view by entering the special number attached to these items. You must then help the hitch-hiker on its way by putting it into the next cache you visit and logging its movements onto the Internet.

The few rules for Geocaching are simple. All the visitor is asked to do is if they take something from the cache they should leave something of their own. No items of food should be left or anything that can be dangerous to animals or people. Caches must not be hidden in animal holes like rabbit burrows and holes must not be dug to hide items. If hidden on private land the permission of the land owner should be sought. The country code must be obeyed. Dogs kept on a lead near livestock, gates closed, and no rubbish should be dropped.

Hides are rated in difficulty and range from the ‘walk in the park’ easy caches, to the hard type that requires many miles of walking in difficult terrain and hard slogs uphill in mountainous terrain. There is a cache hidden on Llyn y Fan for example. We always advice wearing the proper gear for this type of cache i.e. good stout walking boots, warm clothing and waterproofs.

The Geocaching event on May 5th at Dare Valley Country Park
is being visited by fans of the sport from all over England, with some from Scotland. Many from South and North Wales will also be attending the event that will see hunts for many specially set up hides as well as many of the 100 plus hides already in existence of the venue.

The park is host to its own small hotel and a camping site for tents and touring caravans and it is here Cachers will get the opportunity to relax together at an informal barbecue in the evening.

Another feature of the day - that starts with Geocachers and visitors being welcomed at the visitor centre by organisers and Geocacher's Derek and Lynne Cummings of Cwmparc, alias ‘derrylynne’ - is a ‘find out what it's about’ for members of the public that would like to know more and 'have a go'.

This will consist of a short talk at 1pm in the conference room about the sport followed by the opportunity at finding some specially placed small caches nearby put out just for this short course.

If you would like to know more about Geocaching, visit www.geocaching.com to learn more about it - registration is free.

If you are interested in joining in at the Dare Valley event, Derek and Lynne can be emailed at derrylynne@tiscali.co.uk
