MARTIAL ART

Congratulations to Bryony Chislett Williams of Treorchy (pictured) on achieving level 4 in her martial art Dacayana/Eskrima (this discipline uses a rice-flail).

This makes Bryony the leading Junior exponent in the country.

She has been attending classes in ‘Kempo’ at Aberdare and has only one more grading test to reach her black belt.

YSGOL GYFUN CYMER RHONDDA

If your child is in Year 7, 8 or 9 at Ysgol Gyfun Cymer Rhondda there is a Youth Club for them every Wednesday evening from 7 pm until 9pm.

This is a chance for these pupils to socialise through the medium of Welsh and we have football, table tennis, badminton, art, dance mats, Nintendo Wii & pool, and we go on trips each term.

We are in danger of losing this club for which we fought very hard if more pupils do not attend.

For further information, telephone Celia at the school on 680802.

GOING GREEN - Treorchy Youth Centre members have been busy planting flower pots for Ystrad Fechan Home for the Elderly in Treorchy. Last summer the youngsters planted geraniums, petunias and marigolds, then in the autumn they planted bulbs of daffodil, crocus and tulip.

This was an enjoyable experience for the Youth Centre members and after the success of pot planting, they are going to start an allotment project. The members hope to be growing their own vegetables and flowers and sharing the produce with the Residential Home, as well as learning a lot of new skills in the process.

Participants in these projects will be gaining a qualification - a record of achievement, Mayor of RCT Award or Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Jennifer Terry, the Senior Youth Worker, has attended Open College Network Gardening courses to get the up to date information on gardening techniques.

Keep up the Good Work, Treorchy Youth Centre!

YOUTH CENTRE

The Youth Centre in Horeb Street, Treorchy is open on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from 6.30 to 8.50pm, cost 50p.

Activities on offer are weightlifting, basketball, dance, football, crafts, games, issue base work, gardening, citizenship, history project, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Mayor RCT Award, Record of Achievement and trips.

It's aimed at girls between 7 and 15 years old, and runs each Monday at the club between 6 - 7 pm.

The hockey is free to club members and £1 to visitors (this weekly £1 contribution also allows the girls access to all of the club facilities for the week).

Equipment is provided (although bring your own shin-pads) and a trained coach delivers the training.

Lauren Holmes, one of the young people who attend the centre says:

“ I have been coming to Treorchy Youth Centre for the last five years and I really enjoy it. I have an excellent relationship with the youth workers and supervisors and have met some new friends. I think people who are looking to have a good time and a laugh should come to Treorchy Youth Centre and try the experience, so I recommend coming to this youth centre.

I am in the middle of my Duke of Edinburgh Award and I have just completed my record of achievements award. I am on the Youth Committee and also represent the Youth Centre on the Rhondda Youth Forum. I have also completed my netball accreditation certificate. So you can see there are plenty of opportunities to do positive things.”

  • Under 9 ‘A’ team  -  Cory Shepherd,

  • Under 9 ‘B’ team  -  Jacob Ovendale,

  • Under 11 ‘A’ team  -  Gemma Davies,

  • Under 11 ‘B’ team  -  Alicia Davies,

The Club also runs under 17 and under 19 teams. All of our teams acquitted themselves well in their respective leagues. As well as celebrating the Club’s football success, the evening raised over £1,000 for club funds.

An auction was held for a Football signed by the current Cardiff City squad and a Liverpool F.C. shirt autographed by Ian Rush, also prizes given by local businesses were raffled, our thanks to all who donated. The evening concluded with a disco.

Thanks to the management committee, football managers and club volunteers for their commitment over the season and, of course, to our players and club members, without who we wouldn’t have anything to celebrate.

As always, the club, which is open on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings, needs additional volunteers.

If you could give up a couple of hours per week to help us out, call in at the club, which is located off Dinam Park Avenue, during the evening and ask for Kevin (club leader), or alternatively, during the day ring Dean on 01443 425894 for further information.
