"I Wonder....."

I wonder what it would be like

     to have a cosy bed,

          instead of sleeping on the floor,

               with rats around my head.

                    I wonder what it would be like 

                         to wear a brand new dress,

                              instead of always wearing rags,

                                   and looking such a mess.

                                        I wonder what it would be like

                                             to dine on ham and eggs,

                                                  instead of always eating gruel,

                                                       and other people's dregs.

                                                            I wonder what it would be like

                                                                 to have a birthday treat,

                                                                      and even have a pair of shoes,

                                                                           to wear upon my feet.

                                                                                I wonder what it would be like

                                                                                     to leave this life so sad,

                                                                                          and grow up being cherished,

                                                                                               by a loving Mum and Dad.
