Pembroke Dock, where she met her late husband Len, and settled with him

Matthew’s Church and many of us will recall Jennie from her years spent
working as a cleaner at the former Treorchy Gateways supermarket and also at Treorchy
Somerfield store, where she was pleased to be invited to cut the ribbon a few years ago to

HOME AT LAST
Welcome home to
Aaron Wells of Treorchy, on his arrival home from hospital,
following his
premature birth on January 13, when he weighed in at only 3lbs 8oz.
Aaron eventually
joined his family at home on March 3, and now weighs a lovely 6lbs
exactly.
Big sister Ellie
has recently started school and is very happy to have her new baby brother
home at last.

Congratulations to Alf and Dorothy Pickin of Heol Tyle Du, Treorchy, who
celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on March 13.
Dorothy was born in Gelli, before her family moved to Dyfodwg Street (and
Illtyd Street afterwards) in Treorchy, while Alf hailed from Blaencwm.
They were married in Pontypridd Registry Office in 1943 and lived in the
‘Prefabs’ in Ynyswen before settling in Heol Tyle Du.
Alf worked in the Dare colliery for 25 years, and afterwards at the former
TC Jones factory, and both he and Dorothy are remarkably still very active
in the community, one example being Alf’s fundraising which helped towards
providing a new scanner at Llwynypia Hospital.
The happy couple have three daughters, six grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren, and enjoy their regular weekly evening out at the
Pentre Legion where Alf often entertains with his singing talent. * *

Treorchy Junior School pictured with their Headmaster Mr Powell and
teacher Mrs Margaret Davies. Many of the classmates have moved away
from the Rhondda but still have family living in Treorchy.

* AWARD NOMINATION Congratulations to Laura Davies of
Clara Street, Ton Pentre, who has been nominated by the Mountview Academy
of Theatre Arts in London for the 2008 Lilian Baylis Award. Laura, who is a former head girl of
Treorchy Comprehensive School, has been nominated as the leading college
student in her year showing the potential to make a significant
contribution to the development of theatre. 21 year-old Laura entered the
prestigious Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in September 2006 and is
currently in her second year of a three year BA Hons Degree in Musical
Theatre, and last year won the Paul Coxhead Award for singing. The Mountview Academy in London is
recognised as one of the leading colleges in the world, in regard of Drama
and Musical Theatre, and Dame Judi Dench has recently succeeded Sir John
Mills as Mountview's President. Incidentally, the actor Kevin
Spacey is patron of the Royal Victoria Hall Foundation, where Laura will
be expected to attend a presentation ceremony next June to be presented
with the award and a certificate. This is a wonderful achievement, a
credit to Laura for her hard work and also to her former school and
teachers who continue to help to put Rhondda on the map. Laura has also performed locally, as
one of the leads with the Selsig Operatic Society when they presented the
musical "Jekyll and Hyde" in the Park and Dare Theatre, Treorchy, in April
