Treorchy Senior Citizens Club - Reports for 2008                                  

REPORTS FOR 2008 - by Club Secretary Anna Brown

Carol music, played by Councillor Edward Hancock, welcomed Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members to their annual Christmas lunch at Oak Tree Hall on December 18.

Pauline Worman welcomed everyone and the fire drill took place.  

Mrs Beryl Rowe was called on to say grace and a cooked lunch was served.

Following the meal, Mrs Margaret Harris thanked the committee for organising an excellent meal and for all the hard work they had done throughout 2008.

The afternoon was concluded by Mrs Worman wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. 

Special thanks were given to committee members for donating two Christmas Hampers and to the members who had donated prizes for the Raffle.

The first meeting in 2009 will take place on January 8, when Tracy Pritchard, a student from The Glamorgan University, will give a demonstration on Scrap Booking.

Weekly activities at the hall are as follows.

Slimming Club is held on Mondays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm.

‘LITLUNS DANCE CLASS’ is held on Wednesday afternoons. There are a limited number of places available, for all enquiries please ring 773112.

Ladies Movement to Music Class is held on Mondays from 2.30 pm to 3.30 pm. Places are available, please ring 776681.

The Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on December 4 and the fire drill took place.

Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members and said it was nice to see Trudy back after being ill.

Mrs Beryl Jones collected in the menus for the Christmas Lunch due to take place on December 18.

The afternoon speaker was Debra Perry from Welfare Rights. 

Debra gave out invaluable information relevant to the elderly, advice on keeping warm this winter and various types of benefits available to the over 50’s.

She then handed out leaflets and blankets to members present and eloquently answered all questions put to her. 

Beryl Rowe gave the speaker a vote of thanks and urged members to contact the Welfare Rights department for help and advice.

Following refreshments the raffle took place, followed by three games of Bingo.

Next meeting was announced as the Annual Christmas Lunch which will take place at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, December 18.

Treorchy Senior Citizens Club members met on Thursday, November 20.  Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed everyone to the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Condolences were sent to Alison Phillips on the death of her mother, Myra Phillips and condolences to the family of Megan Crosby, a former member of the senior citizens’ club, who passed away recently.

Get well messages were sent to Trudy Alford, Peter Sampson and Dorothy Picken.

Mrs Beryl Jones announced that the menus are now available for the Christmas lunch. Members wishing to attend, please contact Beryl.

Eira Richards gave information regarding the coach trip due to travel to Worcester on November 27.

The afternoon speaker was Mr Russ Willis who gave an entertaining talk on music during the war years.

Mrs Beryl Row gave the speaker a vote of thanks.

Following refreshments the raffle took place followed by Bingo.

Next meeting was announced to be held at 2.00pm on Thursday, December 4, when the speaker will be Debra Perry.  She will give a short talk on Welfare Support.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, October 23.

Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed everyone to the meeting.

Everyone present was impressed with the newly decorated interior of the hall and side rooms.

Get well messages were sent to Joyce Davies, Marian Jones and Trudy Alford.

Birthday wishes were extended to Beryl Rowe who had celebrated her birthday on October 18 and Mair Dance who celebrated hers on October 23.

Members gave a melodious rendering of ‘Happy Birthday’ and a humorous poem, ‘Dear Lord I’m Still Going’ was read.

Congratulations were given to Eira and Colin Richards who had celebrated 40 years of marriage on October 19.

Eira Richards informed members that the coach due to travel to Worcester on November 27 is now full. She has a reserved list. Money for the trip must be paid by November 6.

The afternoon’s speaker was Anna Brown, who gave a demonstration on the art of card making.

Beryl Rowe gave Anna a vote of thanks.

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Mair Dance. 

The bingo was won by Margaret Davies, Nan Price and Olwyn Millward.

Next meeting will be at 2pm on Thursday, November 6.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, October 9.

Good wishes were sent to Joyce Davies.

Information from Age Concern, warning members of Loan Sharks was read.  The information, along with a help line number, was posted on the hall notice board.

It was announced that the WI would be holding an evening Fete and concert at Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy at 6pm on Friday, October 24. 

There will be various stalls, raffles and refreshments. 

The entertainment will be provided by the children from Penyrenglyn School and the soloist will be Ffion Wilde, winner of the Treorchy Male Voice’s Singer of the Year Competition .

Entrance is £1 and everyone welcome.

Eira Richards gave members information on the forthcoming coach trip to Worcester on November 27.

Councillor Hancock gave information on the proposed closure of telephone boxes in the area.

The afternoon’s speaker was Mr Tony Lynch, secretary of The Rhondda Rotary Club.

Mr Lynch captivated his audience with the history of the Rotary Club.  He told of its early beginnings in Chicago in 1905, right up to the present day.   

He then introduced members to ‘The Message in a Bottle’. 

The bottle is sponsored by the Rhondda Rotary Club and is available in surgeries, chemists, and Senior Citizens’ Clubs etc. and is free of charge. 

The bottle is intended to aid the ambulance service by providing valuable medical information in an emergency.

Mr Lynch then distributed bottles to all members.

On behalf of members of Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club, Beryl Rowe, vice chair, thanked Mr Lynch for his uplifting talk and praised him and everyone connected with the Rotary Club for the good work they do in Rhondda and throughout the world, thus, living up to the Rotary Club Motto “Service above Self.”

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Mr Tony Lynch. 

The Bingo was won by Margaret Davies, Della Street and Doreen White.

Next meeting will be on Thursday, October 23, in Oak Tree Hall, at 2pm.

The Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, September 25.

Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Members were pleased to see Mrs Jose Elias at the meeting. Jose had returned following a long stay in hospital.

Members were shocked and saddened to hear of the death of June Thomas’s daughter Denise. Deepest sympathy was extended to June, Denise’s husband and family.

Eira Richards was thanked for organising an excellent coach trip to Stratford upon Avon on September 18.

Mrs Worman urged member to support The Upper Rhondda 50+ Forum AGM at Oak Tree Hall Treorchy at 10.30am on Monday, October 6.

She said, for the past two years the Upper Rhondda 50+ Forum, headed by Sian Jones, Forum Development Manager, has campaigned to improve the Health of the Upper Rhondda Senior Citizens. 

Eira announced that the next coach trip to Worcester will take place on Thursday, November 27.  Members wishing to travel on the coach, please contact Eira.

The afternoon’s speaker was Ms Maria Moruzzi.

Maria, a member of the Rhondda Cynon Taff Branch of The Alzheimer’s Society, spoke eloquently on the varying types of dementia. 

She stressed the importance of early diagnosis and explained the help that is available in the RCT area.

She handed out booklets and gave information on “All Round Support.”

Beryl Rowe gave Maria a warm vote of thanks with was echoed by all the members present.

The next meeting is on October 9 when Tony Lynch, secretary of ‘The Rhondda Rotary Club’ will give members a talk entitled “A Message in a Bottle’. The talk is to assist anyone who takes medication.

The Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, September 11.

Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed everyone and the fire drill took place. 

Members were pleased to see Beryl Rowe had recovered from her second cataract operation and Glenys Barrett had recovered from her fall when she had attended Mair Humphries’s funeral.

Jose Elias has been discharged from hospital and everyone hopes she will soon be well enough to attend the fortnightly, Thursday afternoon meetings.

Mrs Worman welcomed the afternoon’s new member Mrs Doreen White.

It was announced that there will be a matinee of the film Mama Mia shown in the Phoenix Centre on September 24. 

Mrs Eira Richards informed members that the coach, travelling to Stratford upon Avon on September 18, would leave Oak Tree Hall at 9am.

The afternoon’s entertainment was the popular panel game ‘Call My Bluff’ which was chaired by Margaret Powell. 

Members of the panel were Anne Thomas, Pauline Worman and Anna Brown.

Score keeper was Margaret’s husband Arwell Powell.

The panel tried to dupe the members with three different versions of ten very unusual words.

Kath Davies’s table named “Simply the Best” proved to be “Simply the Best” as they were the afternoon’s winners.

Beryl Rowe gave the panel a vote of thanks. 

A special vote of thanks went to Margaret and her husband for providing the afternoon’s entertainment and for all the preparation work involved in organising the game.

The Bingo was won by Pat Scane, Gwyneth Harris and Anne Thomas.

Our next meeting will be at 2pm on Thursday, September 25, when Maria Maruzzi will talk on Alzheimer’s Awareness.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2pm on Thursday, August 28.

The meeting was opened by the chairperson Pauline Worman and the fire drill took place.

Members were sad to hear of the death of Mair Humphries.

Condolences were sent to Anne Barrett, Mair’s sister and also to Mair’s son Ralph and his family.

Get well wishes were sent to Denise, June Thomas’s daughter. Denise has been in hospital for two weeks.  Everyone hopes she will make a complete and speedy recovery.

Eira Richards was thanked for the recent coach trip to Oxwich and Mumbles.

The next trip will be on September 18, when the venue will be Stratford upon Avon.

The afternoon speaker was Community Policewoman Suzanne Williams.

Suzanne’s talk covered a wide range of information on safety and security, in and around the home and in the community.

Leaflets were distributed to members present and devices to help with security - ultraviolet marker pens, key and purse chains and mobile alarms.

Councillor Edward Hancock thanked Suzanne for all the information she had given and commended her for her work in the community.

Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed everyone and the fire drill took place.  

Members were pleased to see Glenys Harris back following her recent illness and Jean Erasmus following her knee operation.

Members were sorry to hear that Jose Elias had been re -admitted to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Congratulations were extended to Olwyn Bobbett, Rita Richards, Avis Phillips and Ann Williams, whose grandchildren had all received excellent results in their A Level examinations.

Mrs Eira Richards gave details of the coach trip due to take place on Thursday, August 21 and also the trip to Stratford upon Avon on September 18.

Mrs Worman entertained everyone with excerpts from the experiences of a West End Dresser.

Bingo was won by Glenys Harris, Val Martin and Julie, Sheila White and Edward Hancock.

Following refreshments the raffle was won by Barbara Einon.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy on Thursday, July 31.

Mrs Worman welcomed everyone and the fire drill took place.

Wishes for a speedy recovery were sent to Barbara Phillips, Glenys Harris, Mall Whitticase, Mair Humphries, Jose Elias and Jean Erasmus.

Members were pleased to learn that Judith, Pat Wright’s daughter is making good progress following her operation. 

It was announced that Samea Saeed, Director of Health Strategy for RCT & Merthyr Tydfil LHB will be the guest speaker at the Upper Rhondda 50+ Forum meeting on Monday, August 4 at Oak Tree Hall.

Mrs Jean Toghil told members to beware of a telephones scam that was circulating in the area; Members had received telephone calls informing them that they were heavily in debt.  They were then asked to give details of their bank account in order that the caller could help with the debt.  These are bogus phone calls please do not give any information to anyone over the telephone.

Eira Richards announced that the next coach trip will be on Thursday, August 21.  The coach will travel to Mumbles calling at the Oxwich Bay Hotel for lunch.  Anyone wishing to travel, please contact Eira.

A trip to Stratford upon Avon will take place on Thursday, September 18.

The bingo was won by Olwyn Millward, Mair Griffiths and Maud Duncan.

Pauline Worman gave a thought for the day and then introduced the afternoon speaker Liz Lamprey. 

Liz talked about ‘Crossroads’ an organisation for helping carers.  Anyone who is a carer can get help from Crossroads.  More information can be obtained by ringing Liz on 480484.  Crossroads services are not means tested.

Beryl Rowe gave the speaker a vote of thanks and complemented the Crossroads staff on their contribution to the carers in the community of RCT.

At the meeting on July 17, Eira Richards was thanked for organising the annual coach trip, this year the venue was Aberystwyth.

Thanks were given to Beryl Jones, Pat Scane & Isobel for assisting Eira with the raffle on the coaches.

Get well wishes were sent to club members, Mair Humphries, Della Edwards and Glenys Harries and also to Pat Wright’s daughter Judith, who has recently undergone surgery. 

Members were pleased to hear that Jean Erasmus is home following a knee operation and Jose Elias has been discharged from the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

The afternoon speaker was Tess Saunders, who gave a very interesting talk on Stroke Prevention.

Beryl Rowe gave the speaker a vote of thanks.

The meeting was opened by the chairperson Pauline Worman and the fire drill took place.

Members were sad to hear of the death of Mrs Kate Bartlett.  Condolences were conveyed to her husband and family.

A speedy recovery was conveyed to Sybil Rees’s son who is in hospital the intensive care unit.

Eira Richards distributed the tickets for the annual coach trip to Aberystwyth.

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Nan Price. 

The Bingo was won by Trudy Alford, Joyce Davies and Isobel Sampson.

The next meeting is on July 17, when Tess Saunders will be giving a talk on Stroke Prevention.

Treorchy Senior Citizens Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday, June 19.

Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Best wishes were sent to Mrs Glenys Barrett, who had recently celebrated her 90th birthday and also birthday greetings were extended to Mrs Joyce Davies.

Mrs Worman welcomed Mrs Joyce Tucker, a new member, and announced the Treorchy Cancer Research trip to the Belgium Christmas Markets on November 28 this year.

The guest speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Madge Simcox.

Madge commenced by playing a recording of Glen Miller’s ‘In the Mood’ and then carried on with a very interesting talk on the history of Jazz. 

Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Humphrey Littleton, Billy Holiday, Paul Robeson and Mildred Bailey all brought back memories of the passion and sadness from which jazz was born.

Beryl Rowe gave Madge a vote of thanks.

Following refreshments the raffle was won by Eira Richards.

The Bingo was won by Jean Pitt, Marion Evans and Kath Evans.

The annual coach trip to Aberystwyth will take place on Thursday, July 10.

The Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy at 2pm on Thursday, May 22.

Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Members were saddened to learn of the death of Mrs Marian Morris who recently passed away.

Mrs Morris, the widow of the late Dr Morris, was a member of the WI and St. Matthew’s Church. She was a respected member of the community and well known in the area for her charity work. Condolences were sent to her family.

The speakers for the afternoon were Mr Stuart Rogers, Business Facility Manager from Treorchy Comprehensive School, and a team of eight pupils who are part of a larger team working on the School's Eco Project. The pupils were headed by their chairperson Mr Jamie Ryan.

Mr Rogers and each pupil in turn, described the action plan on how they are striving to obliterate litter from within the school area and in, and around, the Treorchy area.

Members were interested and surprised to hear, and see on screen,  the amount of time and hard work the young people and the staff are putting into the project to make it successful.

Many questions came from members and were ably and satisfactorily answered by the speakers.

Mrs Beryl Rowe, vice chair, gave a vote of thanks and said she hoped the pupils and Mr Rogers would make a return visit to inform members of the Eco Project progress.

On behalf of the members, Mrs Rowe wished the pupils’ success with their current examinations and Jamie Ryan, who was leaving to attend university, was wished every success in his future.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday, May 8, for their AGM.

The chairperson Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Mrs Joyce Davies was welcomed back following her operation in April. 

Mrs Julie Hopkins, a new member, was also welcomed. 

Following the reading of the minutes and the annual report, thanks were extended to Mr Brian Brown for the help he has given throughout the year and thanks also to Mr Paul Young accountant, Bute Street, Treorchy.

Officers elected to serve on committee for 2008/ 2009 are;

Pauline Worman, Chairperson. Beryl Rowe, Vice Chair.  Anna Brown, Secretary.  Joyce Davies, Treasurer.

The afternoon continued with refreshments. 

The raffle was won by Mrs Marian Evans. 

The Bingo was won by Councillor Edward Hancock, Nan Price and Gwyneth Harris.

Our next meeting was set for May 22.

Final date to pay contributions for 2008 is June 1, 2008.

The Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club members met at Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy on Thursday, April 10.

Mrs Beryl Rowe, vice chair, opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Apologies were received from Pauline Worman, Anna Brown, Beryl Jones and Judith James committee members, who were unable to attend due to other commitments.

Members were pleased to hear that Jose Elias has been transferred from Royal Glamorgan Hospital to Llwynypia Hospital.

Contributions for 2008 are now due. 

Membership fee is unchanged at £5.00 and the deadline date for payment is June 1, 2008.

It was announced that this year the Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, May 8.

A nomination form, for members wishing to be nominated for committee, is posted on the hall notice board. 

Please note that the final date for nominations is May 1, 2008.

Mrs Eira Richards announced the money is due for the mystery coach trip and lunch.

The afternoon speaker was Councillor Edward Hancock.

Edward entertained the members with “Not a Quiz, Just More Facts.”

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Gwyneth Davies.

The Bingo was won by Joyce Davies, Sybil Rees and Mair Griffiths.

The next meeting will be on April 24 when pupils and staff of Treorchy Comprehensive School will give a talk on their ‘Eco’ project.

The meeting was opened by the chairperson and the fire drill took place.

Mrs Anne Williams, a new member, was welcomed and good wishes were sent to Stuart Lawthom who has recently been discharged from hospital. 

Mrs Beryl Rowe informed members of the progress of Mrs Jose Elias, who is still a patient at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Eira Richards was thanked for arranging the coach trip to The Rest Hotel, Porthcawl on March 6.

Glenys Hathaway had been the lucky winner of a CD Player which was a raffle prize at the Hotel.

Eira announced that a mystery trip with a meal will take place on Thursday, May 15.  Any member who wishes to travel on the trip should please contact Eira.

Councillor Edward Hancock informed members of the Upper Rhondda 50+ Forum meeting which will take place at Oak Tree Hall at 10.30am to 12.30 on Monday, April 7; he then entertained the members with ‘Not a Quiz, Just Facts’.

Following refreshments three hands of Bingo were played and the raffle was won by Mrs Beryl Rowe.                                                      

Members send ‘Get well wishes’ to Mr David Roberts of High Street, Treorchy, who is recovering at home following a knee operation at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital.

Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.

Mrs Worman welcomed back Mrs Olwyn Bobbett, Trudy Alford and Gwyneth Davies.

Get well wishes were sent to Jose Elias, who is still in hospital.

Good wishes were sent to Joan Young, who has moved into a nursing home near her daughter’s home. 

Members were pleased to hear that Gwyn Eira’s son Stuart is making steady progress.

It was announced that Cancer Research are holding a quiz in the Stag Hotel on February 25 at 8.00pm, entrance ticket £2.00.

The guest speakers for the afternoon were Linda and Christine, the manager and receptionist of the Rest Hotel in Porthcawl.

Linda and Christine gave a detailed talk on the history of the hotel since 1887 up until the present time.

The Rest Hotel has an open day on March 6, 2008.  Entrance fee is £1.50 which includes morning tea and biscuits.  Buffet lunch is £6.50.

Beryl Rowe gave the speakers a vote of thanks.

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Lyndis Elliot. 

The Bingo was won by Kath Davies, Hilda Tucker and Mair Griffiths.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, February 28, when the guest will be Averil Magura.  Her talk will be on Spiritual Healing.

Slimming class is held at the hall on Thursdays at 6.00pm

The Treorchy Senior Citizens Club members met at Oak Tree Hall at 2.00pm on Thursday, January 17.

The Chairperson, Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed everyone and the fire drill took place.

Get well wishes were sent to Mrs Josie Elias, Mrs Joan Young and to Gwyn Eira Lawtham’s son, Stuart, who has been admitted to the Heath Hospital.  They were all wished a speedy recovery.

The afternoon’s speaker, Independent Financial Adviser Mr Mark Jennings, assisted by his partner Rhian Watson, gave an interesting talk on areas of finance relating to the elderly. 

Members took an active part in the talk by putting questions to Mr Jennings which he expertly answered.

Mrs Beryl Rowe, vice chair, thanked Mr Jennings and Rhian for an informative talk.

Following refreshments, the raffle was won by Jean Erasmus.

The bingo was won by Marion Jones, Glenys Hathaway and Val Green.

The nest meeting will be held on January 31 featuring a quiz with Ann Barrett. 

On February 14 the guest speakers will be Linda and Christine from the Rest Hotel at Porthcawl.

Slimming Club is held on Wednesdays from 6pm to 7pm at the Hall.
