Treorchy
Senior Citizens Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday
19th October.
The
chairperson opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.
Sincere
sympathy was extended to club member Mrs June Thomas on the death of her
husband Byron. Belated
birthday greetings were given to Beryl Rowe, vice chair. Members
were pleased to hear that Alf Pickin is home after his stay in hospital.
Mrs
Eira Richards informed the members that there will be a coach trip to
Worcester
on Thursday, December 7, with a ticket price of £8.50. The
Christmas Buffet will take place on Thursday, December 14.
Members wishing to attend should inform committee.
The
guest speaker for the afternoon was Jill Evans. Jill
delighted everyone with details of her working life as a Euro MP. She
told of her weekly journeys from Ystrad to
Brussels
and Strasburg, and of her visit to
Jerusalem
,
Iraq
,
Chernobyl
and many other places of interest. Beryl
Rowe gave the speaker a vote of thanks for a very interesting and
informative talk.
Following
refreshments, the raffle was won by Isobel Sampson. The
Bingo was won by Jean Kinsey, Margaret Wilkins and Jose Elias.
Our
next meeting is on Thursday 2nd November when a ‘Bring and
Buy’ will take place. Slimming
class is held at the Hall on Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7pm. Oak Tree

Treorchy
Senior Citizens' Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday,
October 5.
The
chairperson Mrs Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took
place.
Mrs
Beryl Rowe, vice chairperson of the club, was the speaker for the
afternoon. Her talk was based on her experiences during World War
II.
Beryl
held her audience captive with tales of her pre-war working life at
Polikoff's Factory before being called up by the Ministry to serve her
country. She was then based at
Coventry
where she worked for Armstrong Whitley and was part of the team that built
aircraft for the RAF.
Beryl
concluded her story by returning to Treorchy to live and to marry the late
Ben Rowe. She continued her working life by spending the next fourteen
years at Polikoff's Factory.
Everyone
at the hall agreed it had been well worth braving the elements of Thursday
afternoon to hear Beryl's very interesting story. Pauline Worman gave
Beryl a vote of thanks.
Following
refreshments the Raffle was won by Anna Brown, the bingo was won by Olwyn
Bobbet, Val Martin and Joyce Davies.

The Treorchy Senior
Citizens’ Club met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday
24th August.
The chairperson Mrs
Pauline Worman opened the meeting and the fire drill took place.
Birthday greetings were
extended to Mrs Beryl Jones, treasurer, and congratulations were sent to
Gwyn Eira Latham’s grandson Jack Latham, to Rita Richard’s grandson
Ashley Richards, to Avis Phillips’s grandsons Owen and William Phillips,
to Jean Toghill’s granddaughter Corryn Toghill and also to Glenys
Hathway’s grandson Nicolas
Selford for all obtaining excellent results in their examinations.
Mr John Hingott was the
guest speaker for the afternoon.
He gave a very
interesting talk on the history of “
Rhondda
’s Talking Newspaper.” (Which should not be confused with “Talking
Books.”)
The
Rhondda
’s talking newspaper was set up in 1988 by Dr. Gwyn and Mr Hingott.
It is a charitable organisation and is run by volunteers.
In 1988, there were 15
listeners; at its peak, there were 150.
The service is for the
visually impaired and the disabled who are unable to read the Rhondda
Leader.
Anyone who suffers
impaired vision or any disability that hinders their reading ability, and
wishes to join the service should contact Mr Hingott on 685201.
Beryl Rowe gave Mr
Hingott a vote of thanks.
Following refreshments
the Raffle was won by Eira Richards, the bingo was won by Jean Toghill and
Anna Brown.
Forthcoming events will
include Thursday, September 7 when a Music Quiz will be arranged by Russ
Willis, and at the following meeting on Thursday September 21 local
Councillor Edward Hancock will speak on War Experiences.

The
Treorchy Senior Citizens Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday
August 10.
Following
the fire drill, Mrs Worman sent ‘Get Well’ messages from the members
to Kathleen Evans who has recently been admitted to
Royal
Glamorgan
Hospital
.
Mrs
Eira Richards gave an update on the coach trip to Weston on September 4.
Members wishing to travel on the trip were asked to please contact
Eira before Saturday, August 19.
The
afternoon’s entertainment was provided by Mrs Anne Thomas, who
demonstrated her Line Dancing skills.
Anne
was successful in enticing some of the members to join her on the floor.
Mrs
Beryl Rowe, vice chair gave Anne a vote of thanks.
Following
refreshments, the raffle was won by Mrs Jean Pitt.
The
bingo sessions being won by Mrs Glenys Harries, Mrs Kath Davies and Mrs
Trudy Alford.
The
next meeting will be on August 24, when Mr John Hingott will be speaking
on the subject of ‘Talking Books’.
Members
are reminded that a Slimming Class is held at the hall on Thursday
evenings each week from 6pm to 7pm.
The
Treorchy Senior Citizen's Club meet once every two weeks on a Thursday
afternoon at 2.00pm in Oak Tree Hall,
Cemetery Road
, Treorchy.
The
Joining Fee at present is £3.50 per annum and anyone over the age of 55
is welcome, Male or Female.
The
activities at each meeting vary from gentle exercise to bingo and a
raffle. Refreshments are also available and all are welcome to come along.

The Senior Citizens
Club members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday,
July 27.
After the fire drill, Mrs
Worman welcomed members of the Parc and Dare Junior Band to the stage.
Jessica, Samantha,
Sophie, David, Jay, Mali and Delyth, along with Musical Director Craig
Roberts, Librarian Jason Davies and Band Master Mal Picken delighted
everyone present with an excellent selection of brass band music.
Beryl Rowe gave a vote of
thanks.
She complemented the
children on their talent and thanked them for giving up their time to
entertain the Senior Citizens Club Members.
Beryl then said she hoped
they would make a return visit in the not too distant future.
Refreshments were
followed by the afternoon Raffle which was won by Kath Davies.
The Bingo was won by Marion Evans and Kath Davies.
Iris Jenkins was wished
belated birthday greetings having celebrated her 80th Birthday
on Wednesday 26th July.
Members were informed the
next meeting’s theme will be line dancing with Ann Thomas.

Class is also held at Oak Tree Hall on Thursdays 6.00pm – 7.00pm

13th July.
Following the fire drill Mrs Worman
welcomed Mr Bebb as the guest speaker for the afternoon.
Mr Bebb had on display a wide variety of
his pottery, ranging from tiny Welsh Dragons to large intricate
commissioned pieces.
He gave a very detailed talk and amazed
everyone with his skills of turning an ordinary piece of clay into a
desirable object.
Mrs Bebb displayed her handcrafted
needlework.
A vote of thanks was given to Mr and Mrs
Bebb by Beryl Rowe, vice chairperson.
Following refreshments, the raffle was won
by Beryl Rowe.
The Bingo was won by 1 - Beryl Jones,
2 - Gwyneth Harris, 3
- Beryl Jones.
It was decided that the destination of the
next coach trip will be Weston.
The next meeting will be on Thursday 27th
July when the Parc and Dare Junior Band will be performing at the hall.
Every Thursday evening from 6.00pm until
7.00pm a slimming class is held at Oak tree Hall.

1st June. The
fire drill took place.
The Chairperson Mrs Pauline Worman offered
condolences to Mrs Beryl Jones, Treasurer, following the death of her
mother.
Get well messages were conveyed to Gwyneth
Butler and Mair Humphries who are out of hospital and making a slow
recovery at home and to Jackie Morris who is still in hospital.
Everyone wishes them a speedy recovery.
Mrs Eira Richards gave members the choice
of four destinations for the annual coach trip.
Tenby was the choice of the majority.
The afternoon’s speaker was Mr Brian
Meadows. Mr Meadows cave a
very detailed and informative talk on Sheltered Housing.
Beryl Rowe gave Mr Meadows a vote of
thanks.
A quiz followed and Ann Barrett headed the
winning team.
Following refreshments raffle prizes were
won by Olwyn Bobbet and Gwyneth Harris.
Bingo winners were Marion Evans, Josie
Ellias and Avis Phillips.
Forthcoming events are on 15th
June when Tom Phelps will be Reading Poetry and ‘The Treorchy WI
Performing Arts Group’ will be holding a concert at Oak Tree Hall on
Wednesday 14th June & Thursday 15th June at
7.30pm

A Tea Dance for members and friends of
Treorchy Senior Citizens Club took place at the Oak Tree Hall on Thursday
18th May.
Mrs Beryl Rowe, vice chair, welcomed
everyone and the usual fire drill took place.
The afternoon’s activities started with
three games of Bingo.
Winners were 1. Joyce Evans, 2. Trudy
Alford and Josie, 3. Jean Toghill.
A raffle with 14 prizes followed. All prizes were generously donated by club members.
The afternoon’s MC was Mrs Vera and the
dances were introduced by Bernice and Glan.
Mrs Rowe gave a vote of thanks to Vera,
Bernice, Glan and everyone who helped make the afternoon a success.

Treorchy Senior Citizens’ Club held their
Annual General Meeting
at Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy on
Thursday 4th May
2006.
The meeting was opened at 2.00pm by the
chairperson Mrs Pauline Warman and the
Fire Drill took place
Apologies for absence were received from
Councillor Edward Hancock who was attending a memorial service at Parc
Primary School in memory of the 28 people who died in the Cwmparc bombing
raid in 1941. Isobel Sampson
also sent apologies.
The chairperson welcomed back Pat Scane and
Josie Elias following their stay in hospital.
A speedy recovery was extended to Mair
Humphries and Gwyneth Butler who are recovering at home following hospital
treatment also get well messages were sent to
Jean Erasmus’s mother who has been admitted to hospital and
Jackie Morris who has been
admitted to Llandough hospital.
The Minutes of the 2005 Annual General
Meeting were read.
Kath Davies proposed, Glenys Harris
seconded and the members accepted they were a true and accurate record of
the meeting.
Beryl Rowe, vice chairperson gave Beryl
Jones the treasurer a vote of thanks.
Election of officers and committee: The
secretary read the names of the members that were prepared to serve on the
committee.
Mrs Pauline Worman was the only candidate
for the position of chairperson. A
show of hands unanimously returned Mrs Worman as chairperson for the year
2006 / 2007

members who had played their part in making it a successful year.
Mrs Eira Richards announced that the Coach
trip on Thursday May 11th to Abercrave and Mumbles was fully
booked.

March 2006.
Following the fire drill
Mrs Worman welcomed Councillor Edward Hancock back after his absence. Judith
James was also welcomed back.
Mair Humphries has again
been admitted to hospital; she was wished a speedy recovery. Everyone
was pleased to hear that Jackie Morris is back home after several stays in
hospital.
Condolences were sent to
Maude Williams on the death of her brother.
Mr Ray Williams was the
guest speaker for the afternoon. He
gave a very interesting talk on the history of Pigeons. A
vote of thanks was given to the speaker by Mrs Beryl Rowe - Vice Chair.
After Refreshments the
Raffle was won by Avis Phillips. The
Bingo by Ray Williams, Ann Barrett and Dorothy Picken.
Next meeting is April 6th
when Kath from The Pollen Counter will be giving a demonstration on flower
arranging.
The AGM will take place
at Oak Tree Hall at 2.00pm on May 4th 2006.

March.
Following the fire
drill, Mr John Pearce gave a very interesting talk on the history of
cinema.
He told of his
experiences working in Abergorci Hall and other
Rhondda
cinemas.
Following refreshments,
the raffle was won by Hilda Tucker.
The bingo was won by
Gwyn Eira Lawtham, Joyce Davies and Pauline Warmon, and Eira Richards.
The next meeting will be
held on 23rd March when Mr Ray Williams will be giving a talk
on Racing Pigeons.

Citizens club Members met at Oak Tree Hall on Thursday
23rd February. After
the fire drill, three games of Bingo took place. Winners
were Kath Davies, Anna Brown and Beryl Jones.
Mrs Eira Richards
informed members booked to travel on the coach trip to Abercrave and
Mumbles on May 11th, that the tickets will be available at the
next meeting on March 9th Price £7.00 Also the Menu for lunch
at the Abercrave Inn will be available.
Following the raffle and
refreshments Mrs Worman introduced Yvonne Garrard and her team of young
dancers who are due to leave on Thursday 2nd March for
Paris
where they will be representing Wales at Euro Disney.
The young dancers
delighted the members with their various tap dance routines. Thanks
are extended to Yvonne and the troupe for a dazzling afternoon’s
entertainment and good wishes go to them all for a successful trip to
France
.
The next meeting will be
held on March 9th. The
guest speaker, Mr John Pearce will be giving a talk on “The Cinema.”
Slimming Class every
Thursday evening 6.00pm – 7.00pm.
Contributions for 2006
will be due in March.
Committee and Club
members wish to extend congratulations to Pauline and Don Worman who
celebrate their Golden Wedding on March 3, also congratulations to Isobel
and Peter Samson who celebrate their Golden Wedding on 11th
March.

February when Miss Yvonne Garrard’s dance team will be performing their
dance routine in preparation for their performance in Euro Disney.

Senior Citizens met on Thursday
January 12th for their first meeting of 2006.
The
chairperson opened the meeting and welcomed members to the first meeting
of 2006. After wishing
everyone a Happy and Healthy New year, condolences were extended to Mrs
Josie Elias and Mrs Jackie Morris on the death of their respective
husbands.
A Beetle Drive
, the afternoons
entertainment, was organised by Mrs Beryl Rowe.
Thanks are extended to Beryl for a very enjoyable afternoon.
Following
the refreshments’ the raffle was won by Mrs Glenys Owen.
The Bingo was won by Mrs Jean Toghill, Mrs Joyce Davies and Mrs
Pauline Worman, and Mrs Marion Jones.
The
next meeting will take place on Thursday 26th January when Mr
Cennard Davies will be the guest speaker for the afternoon.
