HERITAGE
SINGERS - NOVEMBER 2009
The Heritage Singers Ladies Choir performed at their Annual Concert in St Barnabus Church, Trehafod on November 11, 2009. Thanks are given to members of the Church and all who contributed to the raffle and the buffet. A wide variety of music, including songs from the shows and fun songs with audience participation were enjoyed by all. The
concert was held on Armistice Day and this was not forgotten, poems were
read by Musical Director, Fred Nicholas, recalling the horrors
of wars past and present, and our thoughts went out to the servicemen and
women currently fighting for this country. The ladies next performed in Oak Tree Hall, Treorchy, for the Senior Citizens Club on November 18. The Hall was packed and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Alex Davies accompanied the Choir on the piano. The audience was delighted to welcome Alex who is just 15 years old and gave such a talented performance. Mr Frederick Nicholas, who has only this year undertaken the post of Musical Director, also excelled as compare and kept the audience amused and entertained. Thanks are given to the soloists for the evening Trisha Francis and Claire. The Heritage Singers welcome new members. Singing is such a wonderful experience, if young people are bored, they will soon lose their boredom and find an interest and a hobby for life if they join a Choir. Further

Hannah Ffrancon-Davies, Musical Director was already a promising musician in her early teens and gained entrance to both Trinity College, London and the Royal Academy. Singing is good for you and can have beneficial health effects. Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, who has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years says, “The health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological. Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.” If you are wondering what to do through the long winter evenings ladies leave the knitting and sewing, come and join us - new choristers are always welcome and it can help you survive the winter.
