If any member wished to join the trip, please get in touch with Christine as soon as possible.

OCTOBER - AGM

Treorchy WI President, Mrs Pauline Worman, welcomed members and Clair Atherton, our WI Adviser, to the Annual General Meeting.

It was especially good to see Beryl Jones back after her recent illness.

Members wishing to purchase a WI Calendar should see Ann Thomas.

Those who haven’t already done so should give their names for our Christmas Dinner on December 4.

Members were reminded of our Halloween Fete which takes place on Saturday, October 27 at St Matthew’s Church Hall from 10am to 12.30pm.

Our Treasurer, Mrs Judith James, presented the financial statement for the year 2006-2007.

In her address, our President thanked the Committee for their hard work and support during the past year.

The Choir has been in existence since 1992 and are still as faithful under the leadership of their dedicated conductor Mrs Mary Price.

We look forward to our Annual Christmas Concert on December 20, 2007, followed by hot mince pies in the Church Hall afterwards. This event has gone from strength to strength every year and is now an important part of our WI calendar.

As we heard in the Annual Report, the Kitchen Band are always in great demand all the year round, and we must thank Marian and Anita for all the hard work they do in this respect.

The Performing Arts Group with Margaret, Enid and Anne Thomas at the helm meet weekly in the RAFA Club and would be giving a variety concert at the RAFA Club on October 10 in aid of the RAFA Benevolent Fund.

We still have members in the Yoga Class who joined when the class started just after 1992 and we are indebted to the expertise of Mair Bowen who takes the class.

Thanks to Betty Jones who looks after our savings every month. Our tea ladies and the two Christine’s and their happy band of volunteers very well, and we are very grateful to them for our welcome cup of tea.

Thanks to our Secretary, Sheila Ellis. A big thank you to our Treasurer, Judith, for her good work during the year in keeping our accounts in order and for making the job as treasurer look so easy.

To our Vice-President Milwyn Pearce for her invaluable help and support. It is the members in Milwyn’s age group that are the future of our WI.

A WI cannot exist without officers or the Committee and our President thanked the Committee once again for all their help and support over the year.

We have a busy year ahead with our Group meeting in April and it is hoped that we will also work together to make this a success.

Christine Jones gave the vote of thanks.

Pauline Worman, Sandra Morgan and Nan Price were the raffle winners.

AUGUST 2007

Treorchy WI’s annual outing this year was a ‘Mystery Trip’.

The weather was perfect and the trip was very well-organised, with members being greeted with a very welcome bottle of water on what was to be one of our rare hot summer days.

Marian and Anita were the organisers of the trip and members were asked to chose a place name out of the ‘hat’, and if this proved to be the destination the winner would have a prize.

A bag of wrapped chocolates was then handed around the coach and three lucky winners found a raffle prize ticket hidden in the wrapping.

The coach then stopped for a welcome break at the Sanders Garden Centre, bear Burnham on Sea. We enjoyed browsing around the Centre and having a very enjoyable snack.

Back on the coach the guessing game began about the whereabouts of our destination. Could it be Hampton Court, or perhaps, Ross-on-Wye?

Eventually the bus arrived at a crossroad with Sidmouth to the left and Exmouth to the right.

Finally we arrived in the pretty resort of Exmouth.

Our President, Mrs Pauline Worman, thanked Marian and Anita for a most enjoyable day trip, and this was echoed by all on the coach.

JULY 2007

Treorchy WI President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the meeting.

Milwyn Pearce, our Vice President, was thanked for taking the minutes of the last two WI meetings in the absence of the Secretary.

A letter has been received from Esme Holmes thanking members for their kind messages of sympathy in the sad loss of her dear husband Randall.

Mrs Anita Bound gave details of the forthcoming mystery trip on August 9.

The coach will be leaving Tynewydd at 8.10am.

The trip will be a fun day out and it is hoped that all members will enjoy it.

Our President thanked Mr Bryn John for bringing along his amplifier and equipment to the last meeting.

Members are reminded that the Gwyneth Jarman Competition this year is a watercolour landscape painting of a summer scene, size A4.

A letter has been received from Ty Hafan regarding their Butterfly Appeal.

It was unanimously agreed that a collection box be available to those members wishing to contribute to this appeal.

The WI Choir gave an enjoyable concert in Hope Chapel for Christian Aid.

The Choir’s next venue was the Garden City Women’s Guild, Gilfach Goch, who was, as always, a very appreciative and lively audience.

Our soloists were Kath Davies and Glenys Nash, with Kath Evans giving a very humorous monologue.

The Choir’s accompanist, Sioned, is marrying Alyn in August, so we send them our love and best wishes for the future.

The Kitchen Band has been very busy entertaining in the Homes for the Aged.

Our Performing Arts Group is busy rehearsing for forthcoming concerts.

Our President welcomed our guest speaker, Sophira Shannon.

Sophira gave an interesting talk about the origins of authentic belly danding.

Her form of dancing is called Habiba Fusion, which helps in people’s well being.

Sophira then gave a wonderful demonstration of the habiba dance, which was very graceful and spell binding.

It was a most enjoyable evening.

Christine Jones thanked Sophira for brightening up our evening with her graceful dancing, and for giving us an interesting insight into the art of belly dancing.

Glenys Hathway, Pat Williams and Judith James were the raffle winners.

APRIL 2007

Treorchy WI President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the meeting.

A big thank you to all those who had taken part in the recent Eisteddfod - with the written work, photography, parasols and those who had taken part on the stage. Congratulations to you all.

Once again we won the shield and it is credit to all those who gave up their time with rehearsals – Mary with the Choir, Anita with the Kitchen Band, Margaret Davies with the Choral Speaking, the Performing Arts Group, Angela who taught us the dance and Margaret, Anna and Ann who worked hard with the costumes and the line dance.

The Kitchen Band has been busy over the Easter period with concerts at Porth Nursing Home and also at Ty Ross.

The Choir will be giving a concert in Hermon Chapel on April 24, the proceeds of which will be donated to Christian Aid.

They will also be giving a concert in Hope Chapel, Gelli, on May 25.

It was with deep regret that members heard the sad news of Gwenda Vincent and Mary Webb. Both were loyal members of our WI, and Mary a devoted member of our WI Choir. They will both be sadly missed.

The date of the August Mystery Trip has been altered from the 2nd to the 9th August. A deposit of £5 will be required next month. The coach will be leaving Treherbert at 8.30am.

The Gwyneth Jarman Competition this year is a watercolour painting A4 size.

NFWI raffle tickets are available at £1 each.

Our Vice President Mrs Milwyn Pearce went through the various items of interest in the Newsletter.

Our President welcomed our guest speaker for the evening, Mr John Collier and his wife.

Mr Collier gave an interesting talk about the Terracotta Warriors of China; the talk was accompanied by slides.

Our President thanked John and his wife for a very interesting evening which we all enjoyed.

Our May meeting will be held in Oak Tree Hall. As this is a Resolution meeting and there is only one resolution to be discussed, “To stop closure of community hospitals, which provide essential services to local people”, the rest of the evening will be a social one with bingo and tea and biscuits.

Barbara Phillips, Christine Jones and Ellen Hughes were the raffle winners.

Everyone enjoyed a social evening with a ham and salad supper.

Our thanks go to Anita and Marian who did nearly all the shopping, to Beryl who sorted out the ham and a special thank you to Enid and Margaret (Wilkins) who helped in the morning, putting out the tables and decorating them. This was much appreciated.

Thanks also to Nan Price who entered into the spirit of St David’s Day by wearing her Welsh Costume.

Our President’s surprise entertainments were Lucy, Sarah and Emma, who sang songs from the show and were a joy to listen to.

Christine Jones thanked the girls for entertaining our WI with such lovely songs and also the Committee for organising the supper.

The raffle was won by Nan Price, Carol Clarke and Beth Roberts.

The speaker next month is John Collier who will give a talk on the Terra Cotta Warriors of China.

FEBRUARY 2007

Treorchy WI President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the meeting, with a special warm welcome into our WI of two new members, Betty Williams and Hilary Clayton.

Christine gave the vote of thanks.

Ann Barrett, Christine Jones and Sheila Ellis were the raffle winners.

JANUARY 2007

In welcoming members to the January meeting of Treorchy WI, our President Mrs Pauline Worman wished members a happy, healthy 2007.

Our best wishes go to all those who have been ill over the festive period.

The message of Christmas was taken to the local Homes for the Elderly by our Choir who gave a Carol Concert at Ystradfechan House, where the residents joined in with gusto, and by the Kitchen Band who entertained at George Thomas Day Centre and Ty Ross.

Our Christmas Dinner at Penrhys Golf Club was most enjoyable. We have been able to book the Golf Club for this year’s dinner on Tuesday, 4th December, 2007.

Our Service of Carols and Readings was once again a very successful and pleasant evening. Our President thanked all those who took part.

Many thanks to Mary Price for her lovely choice of carols; to those who read – Kath Evans, Judith James and Pauline; our soloist Kath Davies; our quartet; to David Halstead for taking the service and to Sioned, our accompanist.
