OCTOBER 2006
Treorchy
WI President, Mrs Pauline Worman, welcomed members to the Annual General
Meeting. We
were especially pleased to welcome Carolyn Davies who was our WI Adviser
for the evening.
Our best
wishes go to all the members who are not well at this time.
Lists
were up for the Performing Arts Concert in the RAFA on the October 18; for
Winter Showtime on November 30 and also for the Christmas Dinner on
Tuesday, December 5.
Our
Treasurer, Mrs Judith James, presented the financial statement for the
year 2005-2006.
The
Annual Report of the Committee was read and adopted.
In her
address the President thanked the Committee for their support during the
past year.
A very
big thank you to Eirlys Davies, who was standing down from the Committee
this year, for her loyalty and support. Eirlys will continue to support us
in any way she can and for this we are very grateful.
Thanks
to all the groups who are an integral part of our WI. The Choir who are
very loyal and enjoy their rehearsals with their very dedicated conductor
Mrs Mary Price. The Kitchen Band, who are always in great demand, under
the leadership of Anita Bound. The Craft Class. The Yoga Class, which is
in the very capable hands of Mrs Mair Bowen and the Performing Arts Group
with Margaret Wilkins, Enid Roberts and Anne Thomas at the helm.
A big
thank you to Betty Jones who looks after our savings every month. To our
Secretary; to Mrs Judith James, our Treasurer, for keeping our accounts in
good order, and to our Vice-President Milwyn Pearce for her invaluable
help and support.
Lastly,
thanks to our members of the WI for their continued support and loyalty.

Readings
at St Matthew’s Church on Tuesday December 19.
The
raffle was won by Judith James, Eirwen Rees and Edwina Sass.
Our
November meeting is a Social Evening.
SEPTEMBER
2006
Treorchy WI President
Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the September meeting.
Congratulations to Anita
on having a photograph in next year’s GFWI Calendar. Congratulations to
Ellen and Ton who celebrated their Diamond Anniversary and to Beth and
Philip who celebrate their Ruby Anniversary.
Kathleen Evans is making
good progress after her operation. Our President was pleased to see Ellen
at the meeting after her recent stay in hospital, also Ray who recently
fractured her elbow, and welcome back to
Myra
. Jackie Morris is now at home after her really long stay in Llandough and
we send her our fond thoughts for a complete recovery.
Many thanks to Anita and
Marion for organising our annual trip in August to
Cardiff
Bay
. The weather was perfect and everyone had a lovely day.
Members wishing to go
the Christmas Dinner; Winter Showtime in
Port Talbot
and the Belly Dancing evening in Tonyrefail were asked to put their names
on the appropriate list. Ann Thomas will be taking orders for Diaries and
Calendars. Menus for the Christmas Dinner are being distributed to
members.
Members were reminded of
the following events. GFWI Quiz Night will be held on October 3. The
Performing Arts will be giving a concert in the Treorchy RAFA on October
18. Our Halloween Fete is being held on October 28. Winter Showtime will
be on November 30. Christmas Carol Concert on December 19.
Our Vice President went
through the various points of interest in the Newsletter.
Members were asked to
submit photographs for the 2007 GFWI Calendar as soon as possible please.
Our Guest Speaker for
the evening was Anwen Coffey. Anwen once again entertained us with her wit
and charm. Judith James gave the vote of thanks.
The raffle was won by
Sheila White, Enid Lewis and Mair Dance.
Our November meeting is
a Social Evening.
JULY 2006
Treorchy WI President Mrs Pauline Worman
welcomed members to the meeting.
Members were made aware of the necessary
Health and Safety Regulations and the need to sign the Health and Safety
book.
We were pleased to see Mair Humphreys and
Betty Williams in our meeting and also Pat Scane who is recovering well
after her operation.
Our tea ladies Glenys Hathway and Avis
Phillips were now taking a long hard-earned rest after making our tea for
five years. Our President thanked Glenys and Avis, along with their able
assistants Pat, Jean and Dorothy for making the job of tea making look so
easy.
Our President thanked members who supported
the concerts given by the Performing Arts Group in the Oak Tree Hall
recently.
Lists were up for the Christmas Dinner, the
Federation Walk on October 10 and, as our Annual General Meeting is in
October, a list for nominations for the 2006-7 WI Committee.
Ann Barrett has the relevant insurance
forms which need to be completed by those members who wish to go on the
8-mile Federation Walk.
Our Vice-President Milwyn Pearce went
through the various points of interest in the Newsletter.
Our President gave advanced information of
the forthcoming Eisteddfod next year and was pleased that there will be an
original Kitchen Band competition.
As our speaker for the evening could not
come along, Pauline was very pleased to welcome Russell Willis who agreed
to do a musical quiz for us at very short notice.
Members enjoyed the quiz that Russell had
compiled, which was music from various Musicals.
Christine Jones thanked Russell for
stepping in at very short notice and for providing us with a very
entertaining evening.
Future events include a trip to Cardiff Bay
on August 4, when the coach will be leaving Tynewydd at 8.45am.
The Performing Arts Group will be giving a
concert in the RAFA Club on September 26 and the Halloween Fete is
scheduled for October 28.Our Carol Service in St Matthew’s Church will
be on Tuesday, December 19 at 7pm with the usual refreshments in the
Church Hall afterwards.
The raffle was won by Olwen Milward, Milwyn
Pearce and Anita Bound, and the meeting closed at 9.15pm.
JUNE
2006
Our President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed
members and Janet Jones (President) and Gina Davies (Assistant Secretary)
of Pontypridd WI to the meeting.
Our President read a letter from Beryl
Jones thanking members for their kind thoughts on the recent sad
bereavement of her mother.
Our best wishes go to those members who are
at the moment unwell.
Jackie Morris is still in Llandough
Hospital and is poorly, we hope she will soon be feeling much better.
Thanks to all those who supported the Drama
Evening at the Berwyn Theatre. Everyone enjoyed the performances by
Tonyrefail WI who entertained us with Barcelona, Treherbert WI with their
hilarious play ‘The Tea Dance’, our WI’s play ‘Looking for a
Hero’ was written by our President and was also extremely comical, and
the Frank Vickery Comedy ‘After I’m Gone’ with a talented cast led
by Christine Tucket and Brian Meadows.
Dianne Parsons, Gwaelod-y-Garth WI was as
ever brilliant with her poem ‘ No Idea’.
Anita informed the meeting that the bus
would be leaving at 8:45 for the trip to the Bay, the coach fare for which
is £4.20 as is payable as soon as possible.
Members were still keen to take part in the
‘Strictly Fun Dancing’ evening, and this will take place later in the
year.
Unfortunately, the Trip to Denman Open Day
has had to be cancelled as there were only 21 members interested in this
trip, and a small coach could not be hired.
Our Halloween Fete this year will be on
October 28 and members were asked to think of ideas for this event.
Our President welcomed Margaret Powell and
her daughter Jane, who had come along and arranged our evening’s
entertainment of ‘ Call My Bluff’.
Members split into teams of six and a panel
consisting of Anna, Milwyn and Ann Thomas bluffed their way through the
various words - which were introduced by Margaret, while Jane kept the
score.
Everyone enjoyed the evening very much and
puzzled over such words as ‘Glabella’, ‘Lunula’, ‘Palimpsest’
and other unpronounceable words.
The Wizards’ were the winning team.
Christine Jones gave the vote of thanks to
our very able team of ‘Bluffers’ and to Margaret and Jane for giving
us such a fun-filled, thought provoking evening.
Raffle winners were Avis Phillips, Judith
James and Eira Richards.
Ann Ferguson won the ‘surprise’ raffle
prize.
Next month we have a flower demonstration
by Kathy of the Pollen Counter in Gelli.
MAY
2006
Our President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed
members to our Resolutions Meeting.
Our best wishes for a speedy recovery go to
those members who are poorly – Gwyneth Butler and Myra Phillips.
Mair Humphreys is now home from hospital
but unfortunately Jackie Morris has been re-admitted into hospital.
We are pleased to hear that Pat Scane is
making good progress after her recent foot operation.
Our President read a letter, which had been
sent to NFWI, and their reply regarding the issue of WI Life to members
and the increase in subscription fees next year.
Lists are up this evening for the Denman
Open Day on the 9th July and for the Christmas Dinner at the
Golf Club on Tuesday, 4th December.
Ticket money for My Fair Lady needs to be
in by the June meeting at the latest.
Members’ attention was brought to various
items of interest in the Newsletter – Winter Showtime in November, the
various taster days and walks, Channel 4’s Countdown are looking for
contestants. There are also flower arranging and water colour days, which
members can enjoy.
The two resolutions were put to the meeting
– “Renewable Energy” and “Sport for a Healthy Population”.
It was unanimously decided that the
Resolution for “Renewable Energy” should go forward.
Raffle winners were Eira Richards, Betty
Jones and Beth Roberts.
Pat Williams won the “booby” raffle
prize.
Three hands of Bingo, which everyone
enjoyed, rounded off the evening.
Many thanks to the “caller” our
President Pauline and to her able Assistant Anna Brown, who worked under
tremendously trying conditions with “Maltesers” as bingo numbers. This
was certainly a hit with all our members.
The
meeting ended at 9.10pm.

APRIL
2006
Treorchy WI President Mrs Pauline Worman
welcomed members to the meeting, especially Jackie Morris, Linda Lewis and
Vera Broome.
Gwyneth Butler and Myra Phillips are both
home from hospital and hopefully Mair Humphreys will be home soon.
We wish them all a speedy recovery.
Mariel Evans is making good progress after
her operation and wishes to thank everyone for their cards and good
wishes.
Mrs Eirlys Davies has kindly volunteered to
run our Christmas Dinner this year.
This will be held at Penrhys Golf Club on
Tuesday, 5th December.
Our Annual Outing on 3rd August
will be to Cardiff Bay, taking in a matinee performance of My Fair Lady.
Names for both these events need to be in
as soon as possible, please.
Our President invited Ann Barrett to report
on the day’s training course she went on to be a leader in Federation
Walks.
Ann gave an interesting insight into all
that is needed to become a leader.
Ann will choose carefully those walks that
will suit WI members’ needs and we are all looking forward to going on
these walks with Ann at the helm.
Lists were up for the Drama Night in the
Berwyn Theatre on the 24th May and also the Open Day at Denman
on Sunday, 5th July 2006.
Our guest speaker was Lynne Danby who gave
an interesting talk on Victorian Wedding Dresses.
Lynne brought with her dresses which were
very fragile and beautifully decorated.
Christine Jones gave the vote of thanks.
Many thanks to those members who decorated
Easter bonnets - they were all very pretty and a winner was hard to
choose.
The Kitchen Band has a full itinerary of
concerts.
The Choir is practising new songs for their
forthcoming engagements.
The Performing Arts are rehearsing for
their Summer concert in the Oak Tree Hall.
The Yoga and Craft classes are both
flourishing.
The raffle was won by Glenys Hathway,
Kerris Richards and Shirley Grimstead.
The
special Committee prize was won by Ann Ferguson.

MARCH
2006
Despite
the very wintry weather conditions, Treorchy WI President Mrs. Pauline Worman
was very pleased to welcome members to our St. David's Day Meeting.
Members
were pleased to hear that Marie! Evans was recovering from her hip replacement operation, our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery are
sent to her.
Our
special thoughts for a full recovery go to Jackie Morris who is now home
from hospital.
Congratulations
to our President Pauline and her husband Don who celebrate their
Golden Wedding Anniversary this month.
Congratulations
also to Kerris on the birth of her lovely grand-daughter lsabella.
Members
enjoyed a social evening of a ham and salad supper.
We
welcomed back as our "after dinner speaker" Mr. Tom Phelps.
Tom
entertained us with more of his wonderful
poems about by-gone days of which we were all very familiar with and a very
humorous poem about "Dai" who wished to join the WI.
Christine
Jones thanked
Tom for coming along and making our evening so special, and also thanked the
Committee for organising the supper.
Special
thanks
must go
to Anita and Marian who once
more did all the shopping for us.
The
raffle was won by Mavis Davey, and the special raffle prize donated by a
member of the Committee was won by Jane Jones.
Lynne
Danby will be our guest speaker in April, and we hope at this meeting to
have an Easter bonnet competition.

JANUARY
2006
After the
singing of
Jerusalem, our President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the Meeting wishing
everyone a Happy, Healthy New Year.
Our love
and best wishes for a speedy recovery go to Mair Flockhart, Mair Humphreys
and Gwyneth Butler, all of whom are at the moment ill in hospital.
Our
President welcomed back Jackie Morris after her hip replacement operation.
Jackie
thanked everyone for their cards and kind wishes while she was in
hospital.
Congratulations
to Pat Wright and her husband Alan who celebrate their Ruby Wedding
Anniversary later this month.
Our
President welcomed new member Glenys Nash to the meeting and also to our
WI.
Lists were
up for our St David’s Day Supper, and the GWFI Council Meeting on the 24th
April when the guest speaker will be Ann Widdecombe.
Our Vice
President Mrs Milwyn Pearce went through items of interest in the
Newsletter.
Our guest
speaker was Mr Tom Phelps who entertained us with poems he had written
about his great, great grandmother, the doctor’s surgery, and the remote
control, along with other very amusing poems.
Everyone
enjoyed the evening immensely and Mrs Christine Jones gave the vote of
thanks.
Glenys
Hathway, Anne Thomas and Mair Bowen won the raffle.
Our speaker
next month is Vera Button who will talk about her life in the Circus.
