DECEMBER
2002
Our
Christmas Dinner at Penrhys Golf Club was enjoyed by all those who
attended.
Many
thanks to Joyce and Betty for arranging the dinner.
The
Choir took part in the Group Carol Service, which was hosted by Treherbert
WI and sang two hymns in a Candlelit Service held in ST. Peter’s Church
on the 13th December.
A
very enjoyable Service of Carols and Readings was held in St. Matthew’s
Church on the 12th December when the Choir sang traditional
carols in Welsh and English, with solos given by Kath Davies and Edna
Morgan, with duets and quintets being performed by Mair (Blaen), Joyce,
Eira, Kath Evans, Kath Davies, Pat, Eirwen and Sheila.
Our
President Pauline Worman and Kath (Evans) read Christmas stories.
Many
thanks to Mary Henry Price and Faith for arranging the musical side of the
evening and to David Halstead for all his help and support in the service.
Afterwards
refreshments were served in the Church Hall thanks to Dorothy, Jean and
Vera.
The
Kitchen Band were very busy entertaining in Nazereth House, Williamstown
and Pentwyn Nursing Home. These concerts bring much joy to all who are
entertained by the “Band”.
The
Mince Pie Night, as always, was a great success with many members donning
fancy dress.
NOVEMBER 2002
President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed
members to the November meeting.
Congratulations to Anna Brown whose
delightful short story “Service with a Smile” is in this month’s
“Yours” magazine.
Members were invited to attend the service
of remembrance in St. Matthew’s Church on Sunday morning 10th
November.
A recipe book “Eating Well This Winter”
is available for members to borrow. Photographs for the 2004 calendar need
to be in, also written work for the forthcoming Eisteddfod must be
submitted before January.
A list of Denman Courses is available and
members are reminded that a Bursary is available to any member wishing to
attend Denman.
Members were reminded of the forthcoming
events; our Christmas Dinner at Penrhys Golf Club on 5th
December, the joint Carol Concert at Bethany Chapel, Treherbert – our
hosts being Treherbert WI – on the 4th December, our WI Choir
has been invited to sing in a Candlelit Service of Readings and Carols at
ST. Matthew’s Church on 12th December, this will be followed
by coffee and mince pies in the Church Hall, the proceeds of the
collection will be towards church funds.
Members of the public are very welcome to
join us in this Service.
Outings Secretary, Mrs Eira Richards, said
that lists were up for Christmas Showtime.
The President welcomed our guests for the
evening, which was an “Any Questions Forum”. The Panel Chairman was
Alan Christopher, with Jose Williams (Ton WI), Margaret Evans (Treherebert
WI), Dr. Tony Lloyd and the Rev. Brownutt making up the panel.
This proved to be a very enjoyable evening
with the panel members answering the very varying questions with much
humour and expertise.
Pauline gave the vote of thanks for a very
entertaining evening and hoped that another such evening could be arranged
at some future date.
Pam Nash, Marian Jones and Gwladys Grey won
the raffle.
OCTOBER 2002
President
Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed WI Advisor Jane Powell to the October meeting,
which was the Annual General Meeting.
A
minute’s silence was observed in memory of members, friends and family
who had recently passed away. The President was pleased to see Maud Duncan
at the meeting.
Thanks
to all members who loaned craft items for the library display and to those
who helped set the display up.
The
Performing Arts had given a very enjoyable concert at the RAFA Club in aid
of Wings Week.
Outings
Secretary Mrs Eira Richards said that lists were up for the Half Yearly
Council Meeting, Christmas Showtime and also the Christmas Shopping Trip
to Oxford. Eira thanked all members who had supported the trips during the
past year.
Our
Treasurer, Mrs Edna Morgan, presented the Financial Reports for the year
2001-2002. The Annual Report was read and adopted.
In
her address, the President thanked Edna for her outstanding work as
Treasurer, members of the Committee for their support and co-operation
during the year.
Special
thanks to Eirlys and Mair (Blaen) who have resigned from the committee
after 9 years, for all their help and support during her term of office.
Unfortunately Mair has fallen and broken her foot and our best wishes go
out to her.
Caroline
has also decided not to stand as a Committee member this year, and was
thanked for all her hard work on the Committee.
Pauline
thanked all the groups who make the WI such a success – Mary for the
Choir, Anita for the Kitchen Band, Enid and Margaret for the Performing
Arts, Letty for the Craft Class and Mair for the Yoga Class.
Thanks
to Glenys and Avis for the very welcome cup of tea, to Eira for organising
the outings and Betty for collecting our savings.
Pauline
warned of the very busy time ahead with members rehearsing for our Group
Meeting and also the Eisteddfod, which takes place during the same week in
March.
Committee
for 2002-2003 are Vice-President Milwyn Pearce, Treasurer Edna Morgan,
Secretary Sheila Ellis, Outings Secretary Eira Richards, Savings Secretary
Betty Jones.
Committee
Members are Anna Brown, Enid Davies, Joyce Davies, Lyndis Elliott, Beryl
Jones and Anne Thomas.
President
for 2002-3 by unanimous vote is Mrs Pauline Worman.
Mrs
Maud Duncan thanked members for their kindness and support during her sad
bereavement and said that £865 had been donated to Trealaw Special School
in memory of Roy.
Milwyn
Pearce, Averil Bowen and Joyce Davies won the raffle.
The
President thanked Jane for coming along to the meeting and helping to make
it so enjoyable.
SEPTEMBER 2002
Treorchy
WI President Mrs. Pauline Worman welcomed members to the September
meeting.
It
was with great sadness that members heard of the death of Raye Caesar’s
dear husband Keith. Our thoughts are with Raye and her family at this very
sad time. Lena thanked everyone for their wonderful contribution to the
smooth running of the funeral of Eileen and said that £521 has been
collected for Y Bwthyn.
Congratulations
to Anna Brown whose prose entry in the Lady Denman Cup 2002 Competition
has been forwarded to NFWI for inclusion in the final judging. Anna
will also be having a short story published in the November issue of the
“Yours” magazine. Anna attended Roy Duncan’s creative writing
classes and it is a shame that Roy is unable to share in the pleasure of
her story being published.
Members
were informed that instead of holding our usual Christmas Fete this year,
we would be having a bumper raffle, which will take place on Mince Pie
Evening.
Members
were also reminded that next month’s meeting was our AGM.
In
November we will be holding an Any Questions Forum and questions will be
needed to put before the Panel.
On
sale were WI diaries and calendars, and also Ty Hafan butterfly pins.
Outings
Secretary, Mrs. Eira Richards said that money due was bus fare for the
Jenny Bond Evening. Lists were up for the Half Yearly Council Meeting on
the 28th October and for the Christmas Shopping Trip to Oxford
on the 7th December.
Our
guest speaker was Mrs. Doreen Neely. Doreen started by paying tribute to
Neville Yeo who was to have been guest speaker with Doreen. Neville will
always be remembered for his sense of fun as well as his great talent in
watercolour painting.
Doreen
gave a lively and interesting talk about the fun she and Neville had
appearing on the Channel 4 Water Colour Challenge hosted by Hannah Gordon
and she had brought along the beautiful paintings she had done during this
competition.
Milwyn
gave the note of thanks for a totally enjoyable evening and we were all
very touched and pleased to see Nancy Yeo acting as Doreen’s assistant.
Anne
Thomas, Joan Young and Beth Roberts won the raffle.
AUGUST
2002
Our
August meeting this year was a day trip to Worcester, where members
enjoyed a tour of the potteries, and on the journey home we had a meal in
a lovely pub.
Thanks
to Eira for making all the arrangements.
Members
are all saddened by the news of our past WI Secretary, Mrs. Eileen Hick.
Eileen
fought her illness with courage, never complaining. Quite the contrary
Eileen always had a ready smile and a very cheerful outlook on life, and
was an inspiration to us all.
She
will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Our
love and thoughts are with Peter her son, and Lena, Eileen’s sister.
JULY
2002
At
our July meeting our guest speakers were John and Mary Bebb. John
specialises in pottery and Mary has a talent for designing cushions and
kitchenware.
The
raffle was won by Jean Price, Ann Phillips and Sandra Morgan.
Our
President, Mrs. Pauline Worman had to report on the sad news of the sudden
death of Mr. Iori Phillips, beloved husband of Myra.
Avis
Phillips and Ann Ferguson had both recently lost their sisters, and our
thoughts are with Mair Bowen whose grandson Richard is in hospital, very
poorly, following a tragic road accident.
We
have also lost two very good friends of our WI. Roy Duncan, dear husband
of Maud, and Neville Yeo. Roy was always very supportive of all our WI
activities and will be sadly missed by us.
Neville
will be fondly remembered for all the support he gave to the shows put on
by the Performing Arts. He also helped the WI at their Christmas Féte
dressing up as Noddy to take the children’s photographs with Father
Christmas. It was a fun thing for Neville and he enjoyed it. We will miss
them both very much.
JUNE
2002
Treorchy WI
President Mrs Pauline Worman welcomed members to the June meeting, with a
special welcome to visitors Mrs Mary Williams and Mrs Sandra Morgan.
It was with great sadness that our
President reported that one of our oldest and dearest members Mrs Annie
Merriman had passed away, she will be sadly missed for her lovely sense of
humour and very happy disposition.
Unfortunately, Eileen is poorly and has
been admitted to the Royal Glamorgan Hospiotal, also in hospital is one of
our former members Ray, we send them both our love and best wishes.
Congratulations to Mair Searle on the birth
of her granddaughter Emily and to Jennie Gillard on the birth of her
grandson George.
The President wished to thank all who took
part in the Jubilee Walk and afternoon tea – thanks to our friends from
Treherbert and Ton WI’s who helped make the afternoon so enjoyable, and
to those of our members who took care of the refreshments.
Special thanks to Mr Emrys Jenkins for
entertaining us with a slide show of the Rhondda as it was in “olden”
days, which was very interesting.
Mrs Eileen Hick wishes to thank all WI
members for their kind messages of sympathy, cards, flowers and donations
to Ty Hafan in memory of her dear mother.
Various items of interest in the WI
Newsletter were brought to the attention of the meeting. The President
thanked members for supporting the Theatre Night at the Berwyn, which had
been enjoyed by all.
Outings Secretary, Mrs Eira Richards said
lists were up for a trip to Worcester on the 1st August and a
proposed weekend trip to London in October.
The Sub-Committees reported that the Choir
has broken up for the summer break, yoga and craft classes were meeting as
usual, and the Kitchen Band are busy with concerts in Pontyclun and
Llantrisant.
The Performing Arts are busy rehearsing for
a forthcoming show in the RAFA Club.
Our guest speaker for the evening was Chris
Bryant MP, who gave a very interesting talk on his life before entering
the world of politics.
Our President thanked Mr Bryant for making
time in his busy schedule to come and speak to us.
The
raffle was won by Margaret Haskins, Eirwen Savage and Kath Evans.
MAY
2002
Treorchy
WI President Mrs. Pauline Worman welcomed members to the May meeting.
Members
who were ill were remembered. Eileen is still poorly and her mother Mrs.
Merriman has unfortunately fallen and broken her femur. Myra Phillips is
improving slowly and sends her thanks and love to all members for their
cards and good wishes. Marion Jones is still poorly.
Congratulations
to Kay Buckland on the birth of her beautiful grandson William, and
Pauline was pleased to see Kath Evans at the meeting after undergoing
surgery on her knee.
Books
on display this evening were Courses at Denman College, the Glamorgan Cook
Club, a wonderful buy at £3, the Women’s World Magazine and the Bulb
Catalogue
Members
were asked if any budding prose writer would like to enter the NFWI Lady
Denman Competition.
Jubilee
Walk – 1st June. This will take place at 2pm and will be
followed by tea and slide show at approx 3.30pm. Members were reminded to
bring any photos they have taken in 1952.
The
Kitchen Band will be entertaining senior citizens at Parc Hall, Cwmparc on
the 15th May and members of our Indoor Bowls Team are wished
good luck for the Indoor Bowls Championship at Sully on the 11th
May.
Outings
Secretary Mrs. Eira Richards said that lists were up for the Royal Welsh
Show, Althorpe House, and the Jenny Bond Evening.
The
meeting then considered the two Resolutions which will go forward to the
IGM meeting. Vice President Mrs. Eirlys Davies read the arguments for and
against Support for Local Abattoirs, and Mrs. Anna Brown the arguments for
and against Stricter Controls on the Importation of Foodstuffs. Pauline
outlined the new Constitution for the WI movement. These were then voted
upon.
The
raffle was won by Glenys Hathway, Kath Davies and Valerie Vaughan.
MARCH
2002
Treorchy
WI celebrated St. David’s Day at their meeting on the 6th
March with a Ham and Salad Supper, with some members entering into the
spirit of the evening by wearing Welsh costume.
President
Mrs. Pauline Worman welcomed members to the meeting, which was informal
and enjoyed by all. Kath Evans recited a poem and the much-loved monologue
“Albert”. Christine Jones gave a vote of thanks to the committee who
had organized the supper, and a special thank you to Carolyn who did all
the shopping.
We
were sorry our Vice-President Mrs. Eirlys Davies and Eileen Hick were
unable to attend, as they were both not well. Our love and best wishes go
to both.
Eira,
our Outings Secretary, said that lists were up for the Gymanfa Ganu,
Jenny Bond Evening, The Royal Welsh Show and it was also hoped to run a
trip to Althorp House in August.
Since
the last meeting the Choir had been busy giving much enjoyed concerts at
Ystradfechan House and Ty Pentwyn Nursing Home. Our Choir Mistress, Mrs.
Mary Henry Price, has been invited to be guest conductor at the Gymanfa
Ganu to be held in Bethlehem Chapel, Treherbert on Sunday, 24th
March - when the Choir will sing an item and will be joined by Treherbert
WI Choir who will also be singing at the service.
The
Kitchen Band gave an enjoyable St. David’s Day Concert at, rather aptly,
St. David’s Court, Ponyclun.
Our
President hoped that members would support the Theatre Evening at the
Berwyn Theatre on the 22nd May when members of Treorchy WI will
be performing in the humourous play “Wedding Day Surprise”.
Two
teams from our WI will be competing in the Indoor Bowls at Sully on the 11th
May.
The
Performing Arts are putting on a show at Oak Tree Hall entitled “Let Me
Entertain You” and tickets are available for Tuesday 9th
April. Mmebers of the public are invited to coma along and support this
not-to-be-missed show!
The
raffle was won by Mrs. Edna Morgan, Mrs. Margaret Lloyd and Mrs. Barbara
Phillips.
FEBRUARY
2002
Treorchy
WI President Mrs. Pauline Worman welcomed members to the February meeting.
The President was pleased to hear that Mrs. Mair Humphreys is feeling a
lot better and is being transferred to Llwynypia Hospital. Curly (Jennet)
is still in Llwynypia Hospital and is making good progress.
Congratulations to Nan Price on the birth of her grandson.
Queen’s
Jubilee – The President informed the Meeting that Ton and Treherbert
WI’s would be joining us for the proposed walk and afternoon tea on the
1st June. Some form of entertainment will be provided after the
tea and we are all looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon together with
our friends from Ton and Treherbert.
Breast
Test Wales – members were informed the mobile van was in the area
providing free screening for women 50-64 years.
Our
Vice-President Mrs. Eirlys Davies gave a brief report on the Resolutions
Meeting that was held in Church Village on the 9th January.
Resolutions to go forward to NFWI were – Stricter controls on the
importation of foodstuffs, Action on HIV/Aids world-wide, Air Ambulance
Service, and lastly, Climate Change.
It
was good to see four members from Rhondda on the new Executive Committee
– Carolyn Davies and Pauline Worman (TreorchyWI) and Barbara Webb and
Yvonne Garrard (Treherbert WI).
Mrs.
Edna Morgan, Treasurer, gave the financial statement. Outings Secretary
Mrs. Eira Richards said that lists were up for Line Dancing, Gymanfa Ganu,
Group Meeting, Council Meeting, Theatre Evening at the Berwyn Theatre, and
the Royal Welsh Show.
Mrs.
Enid Davies said that members of the Performing Arts were busy rehearsing
for a variety show to take place on the 9th and 10th
April.
Choirmistress
Mrs. Mary Henry Price informed the meeting that the Choir has restarted
after the Christmas break and had given an enjoyable concert at Pentre
House on Tuesday, and has a full programme ahead visiting local
Residential Homes and Centres for the Aged.
Members
were reminded that the March meeting is our St. David’s Day Supper.
Our
guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Wynne Edwards who gave an amusing
and hilarious talk about “Treasures in the Attic”. He arrived laden
with memorabilia, and every item had an enjoyable tale. Mrs. Marian Evans
thanked Mr. Edwards for giving such an uplifting talk.
The
raffle was won by Eufron Lewis, Maud Duncan and Jean Toghill.
JANUARY 2002
Treorchy
WI President Mrs. Pauline Worman welcomed members to the January meeting
and wished everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year.
Good
wishes were extended to members who had been ill over the Christmas
holidays and it was hoped that Valerie Vaughan is recovering after
breaking two bones in her foot. The President was pleased to see Eileen at
the meeting.
The
Annual Christmas Dinner at the Penrhys Golf Club had been enjoyed by
members, and the Service of Carols and Readings at St. Matthews Church had
been very successful.
Not
as many people as usual attended Mince Pie Night, but this may have been
due to the cold weather. Many of the members who attended came in fancy
dress.
The
President thanked Mrs. Mary Price for organizing the very enjoyable
Weakest Link and also those who took part. Thanks also to Bryn and his
wife who attended and organized the “Disco” to round off the evening.
At
the “all I Want for Christmas” competition at Cowbridge, Treorchy WI
came out second in the Limerick and also obtained first prize in the
drawing of “Christmas Cheer”.
Outings
Secretary Eira said lists were up for the Resolutions Conference on the 9th
January, Line Dance School on the 2nd March, and the Gymanfa
Ganu.
Other
trips coming up were to the Royal Welsh Show and possibly a day trip to
London taking in a show.
For
the Queen’s Jubilee members were invited to take part in a walk and then
afternoon tea in the Church Hall, Treherbert and Ton WI’s will be
invited to join us.
The
speaker for the evening was Denise Davies. Denise had started up a group
“Older and Wiser” which meets at Llantrisant Leisure Centre. The group
is aimed at 50+ year olds, and encourages members to eat healthily and
stay young at heart. A trip to New York was organized where members were
able to see at first hand the devastation at Ground Zero.
Mrs. Morris gave the vote of thanks.
The
raffle was won by Shirley Grimstead, Eira Richards and Milwyn Pearce.
Our
speaker for the February meeting is Mr. Wynne Edwards who will talk about
“Treasures in the Attic”.
