We were very pleased to see Mair
Flockhart with us this evening.

who celebrated a very special birthday recently and to Ursula who is
grandmother for the second time this year to lovely baby Alfie.
Our love and best wishes are sent
to Pat Scane who recently sustained an injury to her shoulder.
We send our love and best wishes
to Ffion Wilde who has been ill recently. We hope she is now well on the
way to recovery and that we shall see her soon.
Margaret Haskins thanked everyone
for all the cards and best wishes she received on her special birthday.
Our President was very proud that
Treorchy WI won the overall Shield in the recent GFWI Arts Festival.
Congratulations to all who took part in the written, craft and stage
events.
We gained first place in the Creative Dance, Sketch, Choir,
Limerick (Anna Brown) and had first and second places in the spontaneous
dialogue (Milwyn, Diane, Christine and Judith).
We won second place in the
Choral Speaking, second prize in the Folk Song (Kath Evans), Glenys Nash
won first prize with her book mark and second prize with her Montage;
third prize in the Karaoke (Kath Davies), and Carole Clark was highly
commended with her photo caption.
Our President thanked everyone for
the hard work they put into the various events – Mary Price (the Choir),
Ann Thomas (the Creative Dance), and those who took part in the Sketch and
Choral Speaking.
The £5 deposit for the Mystery
Trip in August needs to be in this evening, and the balance of £7.50 as
soon as possible please.
The Gwyneth Jarman competition for
next year is a photograph of a local Rhondda scene (black and white or
colour) 6 inches by 4 inches. This year’s competition was won by Mrs Cheryl
Rees, Ton WI.
Our Vice President, Mrs Milwyn
Pearce, went through various items of interest in the Newsletter.
Our guest speaker for the evening
was Dean Powell. Dean is a member of Treorchy Male Voice Choir and gave a
very entertaining talk on how the first male voice choir was formed in the
Rhondda. This took us on a journey up to the present day.
Dean is
well-known for his skills as a compère at the Treorchy Male Voice concerts
and this was evident with the very interesting and enjoyable talk. Mrs
Christine Jones gave the vote of thanks and we are sure that we shall be
seeing more of Dean in the future.
The raffle was won by Joyce
Martin.

a proud grandmother to baby Alistair.

February 2009
Our President, Mrs Pauline Worman,
welcomed everyone who had braved the elements and turned out on such a
cold evening and was pleased to see how many members were present for our
February meeting.
Members were made aware of the
Health and Safety procedures.
Our love and best wishes were sent
to Hilary Clayton. We also send our love to and best wishes to Pat
Wright’s daughter, Judith, who is in hospital.
The list for the St David’s Day
Supper is available. There will be no charge for the supper and there will
also be a free raffle. Entertainment has been arranged for the evening.
Eisteddfod entries for the written
work and the photo captions have been submitted to GFWI. Photographs and
other items of arts and craft will be sent to GFWI by the 23rd
of this month.
Entries for the Gwyneth Jarman
Plate should be in before February 17. The competition this year is a
humorous short story of no more than 500 words. Ton Pentre WI is holding a
Coffee Evening at Ton Pentre Junior School on March 23 when the winner of
the competition will be announced.
Our Vice President, Mrs Milwyn
Pearce, went through various items in the GFWI Newsletter.
Members were asked to support the
petition and meetings which are being held regarding the closure of
Treherbert Swimming Baths. Many of our members are avid users of the Baths
and it would be a shame to see the Baths close.
Anita informed the meeting that a
Mystery Trip is being arranged for Tuesday, August 4. More details later.
Unfortunately, because of the very
bad weather, our speaker Dean Powell was unable to be with us. We hope to
invite Dean back to our WI at a later date. However, everyone enjoyed a
really spontaneous fun evening with Enid Roberts getting things under way
by telling us a few humorous yarns, Diane followed and then we were
entertained by many of our members telling us humorous stories (many of
which were true).
All in all, we had a very
enjoyable time and our President thanked everyone for making the evening
such a warm and friendly one.
Pauline Worman, Margaret Harris
and Christine Evans were raffle prize winners.

Afterwards we all
enjoyed a game of Bingo. Many thanks to Pat Scane, who sold the bingo
tickets, and to our President Pauline for being our ‘caller’.
