Freehold farm and land known as Castella situate in the parish of Llantrisant in the County of Glamorgan. 

  • Indenture 12th September reign of James  “the Seaven and fiftieth” ?? possibly 1610] Robert Johannes of Llantrisant & wife Elizabeth & John ap Evan of Llantrisant.

  • Indenture Robert Evans clerk & wife Elizabeth of Llantrisant 12 Sept 1627 & John ap Evan of ?Geoger  1st October 1627

  • Indenture 2 November 3rd year of reign of Charles [?1628] Richard ap Evan of Llantrisant yeoman & ? Mallt his now wife & Evan ap Richard their son & John ap Evan of ? Trebaykyg in Llantrisant

  • Indenture 9 November 4th year of reign of Charles I [1629?] James John Jenkins of Llantrisant & Agnes John widow of Geoger in Llantrisant.

  • Indenture 17th August 1706 between John David of Llantrisant yeoman & Elizabeth his wife & David John their oldest son and heir, of Llantrisant and Reignold Door of parish of Peulluie in Llantrisant [note wonderful penmanship in title words!]

  • Indenture for land lease 31st March 1712: John David, Elizabeth his wife and David John eldest son, and Robert Door gent in Llantrisant

  • [?nuncupative] Will of Elizabeth Hilling of Llawhadon 5 Nov 1720

  • [Latin] Probate Elizabeth Hilling 7 Dec 17?? [Assume 20?]

  • *** two documents in difficult spiky legal Latin, in cream envelope, that I cannot read – one mentions an Elizabeth

  • Evan John deed to John David of Lawhaddon  in Pembroke yeoman release of lease 17 Aug 1725 [interest of 2d on mortgage of £100]

  • Indenture 31st August 1752 between David John of Llantrisant yeoman & John Bevan gentleman

  • Will of David John of Llantrisant 1st Sept 1752 [goods to sisters and primarily to nephew John David.

  • Probate of David John 23rd October 1762

  • Will of Evan John of Haverfordwest and late of Drimm in parish of Lawhadon Pembroke 20 Nov 1768

  • Probate administration of will of Evan John on 22 May 1770

  • Lease for a year 20 November 1799 John David to Richard Howells [farm is called Tir y Tuy duy or Castella fach]

  • Indenture 21st November 1799  between John David of Castella fach  in Llantrisant & Richard Howell of Newmill

  • Mortgage by demise of Castella fach for securing £600 and interest 29th July 1824 between William Jenkins shopkeeper of Merthyr Tydfil & Richard Griffiths of Cardiff esquire [solicitor Morgan of Merthyr Tidvil]

  • Lease for a year 31st Jan 1834 William Jenkins of Merthyrtidvil druggist to Samuel Thomas shopkeeper of Merthyrtidvil for Castella fach [solicitor Meyrick & Davies of Merthyr]

  • Mortgage of Castella fach for £900 and interest 1st February 1834 Rev George Thomas, clerk of Cardiff + Mr W. D. Jenkins druggist of Merthyrtidvil to Samuel Thomas shopkeeper & William Davies gentlemen of Merthyr [solicitor Meyrick & Davies of Merthyr]

  • Will of William David Jenkins druggist of Merthyrtidvil 22 Oct 1830 proved 19th Jan 1835  [Castella fach – friends George Pierce of Dewlais gentleman & Rhys Davis of Merthyr post master to be trustees for Maria wife and sons John David Jenkins and Jams Griffiths Jenkins, minors.]

  • Mortgage of Castella fach for £400 and interest 14th March 1846  Rhys Davis with consent of Maria Jenkins to William Davis [solicitors Perkins & James Merthyr]

  • Further charge of £300 on Castella fach 19th June 1857 Rev. John David Jenkins B.A. of Jesus College Oxford and James Griffiths Jenkins gentleman of Merthyr [became Roman Catholic priest, died 20 March 1869 and was buried at R.C. Monastery at Pantasa near Flint] to William Davies of Cwm Saibren in parish of Ystradyvoduck  gentleman

  • Transfer of mortgage to secure Castella fach Farm William Davies of Toll Farm in parish of Ystrady fodurs  [eldest son of William Davies of Cwm Saibren] & John Davies of Cwm Saibren gentleman to Mary Morgan widow of George Town in Merthyr 26th September 1857 [Morgan & Smith solicitors Merthyr]

  • Conveyance of Castellafach farm 18th April 1877; Thomas Jones  Dyke esq,of The Hollies Merthyr Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons, Mrs Eliza Dyke his wife, said T. J. Dyke as administrator for Rev John David Jenkins, Mrs Eliza Macnamara of 34 Linden Gardens Bayswater Middlesex widow and Messrs Simons of Gwainwarren, Merthyr gentleman & Charles Herbert James of Merthyr gentleman [solicitors Simons & Plews Merthyr]. T.J. Dyke was half brother to Jenkins brothers.

  • Contains notes etc – farm sold to David Treharne – tenants to pay rent from 1st October 1877 to him and not Mr Dyke. Also farm known recently as Castella Uchaf.

  • Conveyance of Castella fach 8th October 1877 William Simons of Merthyr gentleman, Charles Herbert James ditto, Walter Henry Macnamara of No 5 Paper Buildings Temple in the City of London esq. Barrister at Law to David Treharne esq of Pentre in the parish of Ystradyfoding gentleman [solicitor Walter Morgan Pontypridd]. Contains map of Castella Uchaf formerly fach.

  • Lease of Castella Uchaf by David Treharne to Great Western Colliery Company Ltd 1st July 1914, with copy. Maps of land on back.

Evan’s father, John [“Jack”] B. Jones was the oldest and longest serving solicitor in Wales, 

practising for sixty years until very shortly before his death at the age of eighty-five.
